Dearest readers, Welcome to the last blog. I hope that you have had a pleasant journey. For the final blog, please may I suggest you grab yourself a cup of tea and a biscuit? I think this will be quite the yarn. Norway was the last European country which we ventured to in our travels. We arrived in Norway after having caught our last train on the Eurail pass. Arriving rather late into Oslo we took our bags to our accommodation 4km from the centre of town. After we had got ourselves settled, we made the journey a small way into town, had some dinner and met up with Owen and Marte at their lovely apartment. In Norway, people do not venture out of their houses until after many pre-drinks as drinks in Norway are amazingly, ... read more

Europe December 5th 2011

Dearest readers, By crikey its been a while (sorry, practicing my Australian). I am rather sorry, however you must understand that there is a rather good reason for my delay in getting around to updating you with all the latest goss (I'm also practising what 'the kids of today' are saying). So I left you in Wengen. Well, not really, but you know what I mean. This is where our story begins. I'm sorry Unkie Chris, but this might be another long one - I hope work can afford the extra paper (he keeps copies you see, and highlights his favorite bits - especially those referring to Phillip). Right, so Wengen. It took quite a while to get there from Luzern. We had to catch one train, then another train, then a cable car. We were ... read more

Europe November 18th 2011

Dearest readers, We meet again! Whats cracking at your end? We arrived in Salzberg at a rather empty and ambiguous station. To find our way out of the building we had to hone our "choose your own adventure" skills. Once we got out we had to catch two buses to our accommodation. Upon entering the accommodation we were greeted by the ever money saving functional piece - a kitchen... equipped with a fridge!! The time is now upon us where we lose daylight at about 5pm and as we were quite a way from town we decided that it was time to get our Masterchef on (Nick was Dani). The following morning we had major plans to get into Old Town. The accommodations landlady advised us that we were just a small way off the map ... read more

Europe November 8th 2011

After we had our sad goodbyes with Murkin and Durkin on the transport bus, we made our journey to Amsterdam. We checked into our hostel and headed straight into the red light district for some prozzie hunting. We had some trouble initially, but we eventually were able to find them. My favorite thing is the way that the ladies are segregated according to their major selling points - colour, size and attractiveness. I think we were in the good areas, hard to know though - you don't want to make too much eye contact. I found their cat-like reflexes amazing, it was as if they knew as soon as someone was looking at them. We then thought it would be amusing to go and see a "show" but awkwardness was on the cards and we ran ... read more

Europe » Ireland November 1st 2011

Our Ireland trip was probably the highlight of our trip. We arrived in Dublin to meet up with Mursheen (Naomi) and Durkin (Chris) at the new Generator Hostel. We were staying in a 4 bedroom private dorm and the place was probably the nicest hostel we have ever stayed in. All the beds were brand new, as were the sheets and the pillows. I cannot tell you how much it gets my goat when hostels continue to force patrons to use pillows that have developed severe deformities. Once we were checked in there was little left to do on a Monday night other than form the meanest gang Ireland had ever seen. The following day the final gang formation plan was discussed and approved and we converted to a bikie gang. However upon our journey to ... read more

Europe » Spain October 25th 2011

Spain was both AMAZING and not so amazing. We arrived in Madrid and it was hot, red hot. After a time consuming consultation of our map, we guesstimated which street we were going to walk down to find our out of the way/ not so out of the way hostel. Upon arrival we discovered that the bed sadly sank in the middle, on the upside there were 7 other beds to choose from. The day after we arrived, we went on a free walking tour which took approximately 3 hours. It wasn't great, and I think what annoyed us the most was that they incessantly tried to sell their other tours. Which were not free. In saying that it annoyed us, let me clarify that we are not against paying for the tours, but that we ... read more

Firstly, our challenge results: England Local cuisine: Parmo - a parma, but you can only get them in the North East of England. Local drink: My uncles friends made Nick drink a Newcastle Brown Ale - also known as "Dog." He'll never trust an Englishman again. Soundtrack: "If terrible is a song... then that’s it" - Nick On our last day in England we spent the day in Scarborough checking out the castle and playing on the amusements. We also ate some fish and chips and ice-cream (for those of you playing at home I had cookies and cream). On Saturday morning we dropped Harry back at the car house in Newcastle and hopped to the train station to get, of all things, a train to Edinburgh. Upon our arrival we continued with the "rain" theme ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom October 6th 2011

From Sittingbourne we went to see my aunty Helen and uncle Chris in Clacton-on-Sea (south of London). There is not a lot to do in Clacton except drink, figure how these fandangled "mobile phone" thingys work, and dance in the kitchen when you were looking for something to do. Oh, and laugh at the cat in the cupboard. Nick and I also ventured to Clacton Pier where there were some pretty cool wind turbines in the middle of the sea. We also spent some time watching the native Essex-ians and marvelling at their behaviour and/ or dress. Most of the nights were spent in the lounge room (also doubles as our bedroom) chatting with Helen and Chris but one (glorious and nostalgic) night we also went to Chris' local to taste their brew. We had a ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London September 19th 2011

We took our first few days in London town pretty easily, although in hindsight these were the days we were the most active. We walked mostly around the west end and even took in a theatre show at Victoria Palace: Billy Elliot (music by Sir Elton John). Billy Elliot was good and Nick enjoyed it a lot, although personally I prefer the movie. Seeing a show in London's West End though - what an awesome experience! On the Monday we went to Madame Tussauds and M&M World. Whilst I'm being honest, I must say that Madame Tussauds has gone significantly downhill since they removed Bon Jovi. However, it was redeemed somewhat by having Leonardo DiCaprio. What a guy! M&M World was pretty good, but it was mostly a memorabilia store. This didn’t detract however from Nick’s ... read more

Rise and shine - 5am and our early flight to Kuala Lumpur beckons. Dad took me the scenic route through Kangaroo Ground and Wattle Park to ensure that it was ingrained in me how very pretty Australia is. "Look daughter!" said father, "See the glorious landscape our beautiful Melbourne has. Will thoust not return speedily to thy Papah?".”Yah Papah," I duly responded "this landscape is just as glorious as thou mentioned earlier". Short interjection for a great backstory: I had been freaking out about the flight because I felt like I was getting sick with an ear infection. Turned out it was a pimple. In my ear. Which I popped. Result: Both gross, yet awesome. The happy couple arrived in Malaysia after an 8 hour flight. Upon arrival we encountered above average humidity and a smoggy ... read more
