We arrived in kuala lumpur at 5.20am and nothing seemed open except mcdonalds! we had to wait in the train station until the trains started running so we had some pancakes and coffee at McD's. When we got to our hostel we had booked online we discovered they had messed up our booking and had thought we were arriving the day before and when we hadn't turned up they gave our room away. After hassling the guy to sort it out, he was determined that he had until 1pm to do so but we weren't happy to wait until then not knowing if we had a room, he eventually said we could stay that night but maybe not the next two nights. He wasn't really being much help so we booked another hostel and paul convinced ... read more

Arrived in KL after the longest flight ever in my life... We left Heathrow London Airport at 2pm English time and arrived after 1 stop in UAE at about 6.30am the following morning after 16 long hours... I was really pleased to be back on the ground but i felt really tired after the long journey and the heat hits you as you walk out the air conditioned airport. I got a surprise when i saw the Pertronas Towers...they are so big... stunning as well. We checked into the Green Hut Hostel with 3 other travellers we met on the plane, they were going surfing for two months. They were quite funny cos they were carrying these massive Surfboards along with them... The people at the Green Hut Hostel were very welcoming and helpfull, I had ... read more

After performing the usual brekkie ritual, I grabbed my rucksack and camera before taking a short wander across to Central Market in order to catch the bus to the Batu Caves. After twenty minutes and having finally figured out that I was waiting in completely the wrong place, I ran about 100 yards up the road and hopped on the Number 11 which was just about to depart. Public transport in KL is so cheap and easy to use, the total cost of my return bus fare to the Batu Caves (which is way out of town) was a mind blowing bank breaking 60 pence...plus not only was there a bus conductor, but a ticket inspector too...how crazy is that!! Speaking of crazy, I had another of my mad moments when upon arrival, I decided in ... read more

'Salamat Datang' - 'Welcome', to Malaysia and the Cameron Highlands 8th December 2008 Malaysia - Kuala Lumpur to the Cameron Highlands It's another public holiday in Malaysia. At the last count, there were 14 such 'holidays' for one Religion, National celebration or another, throughout the year. This week it's Raya Aidiladha, or Hari Raya Korban, a Muslim festival marking the end of the hajj pilgrimage period. Perhaps it's all these holidays that keeps this mlticultural society at peace. They're playing Christmas music in all the shopping malls in Kuala Lumpur: White Christmas (some hopes!) and Jingle Bells, the shops are bedecked with tinsel and Santa rides his sleigh around the Christmas trees, swathed in lights ten floors above us. The shops were busy on Sunday, escalators ferrying people in all directions, cheerful faces, smart retailers, b ... read more

For as long as I can remember we've always celebrated Christmas with all trimmings. In our family that's what good Moslems do :D In KL we celebrate in the German tradition of Aunty Marga, on Christmas Eve, with a huge stuffed bird, sugar dusted star-cookies and thick slices of stollen. When I lived in London we lounged around all morning in front of a crackling fire, with ButteredToast-SteamingTea-TheTimesSupplement, listening to the Queen's Speech on telly and playing monopoly till turkey, brussel sprouts, roasted parsnips and brandy butter was served around 3pm for lunch. In Dubai, Christmas Lunch always took place outdoors. The crackling fire came from the BBQ :) The mulled wine still excellent. The 2 global constants in MyChristmasses have always been the greedy thrill of secretly wrapped presents - and - the pure childlike ... read more

This morning, I woke up with a churning stomach and feeling really nausius so I spent the vast majority of the daytime in my room resting. Its so humid too right now which is adding to my discomfort...hopefully this is just a passing bug!! Maybe it was the Egg Macmuffin!!! Forced myself out to the Beatles Bar tonight as I was meeting Kevin, Jean, Forrest and Sarah again...and once again, it was a top night of chat and light banter...I even managed to force down a portion of chips too (with Sarahs help) which made me begin to feel slightly better. Tonight, I sat down with Jo, Richard and Zach to watch the Liverpool Arsenal game which kicked off at midnight...with three of us supporting the reds...Zach the goons, just shows how much Malaysians know about ... read more

Hi all, We're back on the mainland now. No more flights until Boxing Day - the flights aren't that bad, its just the waiting around before and the packing, oh and why are airports always so far out of the city (stupid question - we don't need any smart answers thanks). It's just getting a bus is easier cos they can go right into town - where you want to be. We first flew from Tawau to Kota Kinabalu on Sunday then from Kota Kinabalu to Kuala Lumpur on Monday. We stayed in Akinabalu Hostel again which was fine and the free internet was a bit quicker this time which was a bonus. We had heard a rumour that Pizza Hut were doing a deal where you could get 2 pizzas, 2 soups and 2 drinks ... read more

Originally from Klang, I grew up with eating nice food... especially Bah Kut Teh. Traditionally Bah Kut Teh is pork meat that serve with herbal soup and rice. For muslim, one can order Chi Kut Teh which uses chicken meat. Bah Kut Teh also comes with dry Bah Kut Teh which has been popular ever since it has been release. There's an area which is call Taman Rasnah, just before the Klang toll, that is popular with Bah Kut Teh. Also there's a Bah Kut Teh shop behind the Hokkien Association which is one of the most famous shop where many tours will stop there to have their lunch. They even have their own website www.bahkutteh.com where u can browse through their menu and then people's comment on the shop. (it is in mandarin though). Klang ... read more

Day 42: Kuala Lumpur to Port Dickson We’d been in KL five days, in part because it was a huge, international city and quite intriguing, and in part because we’d been investigating going to Australia to work. When we set off this morning we were quite ready to journey on. We went first to search for the Sentral Train Station. Not wanting a repeat of our dangerous highway experience coming in to the city, we were reluctantly resigned to taking a train out of the city. It took us an hour to find the station, riding around in the rain. We rode in to the station, wet and cold, to meet a wonderful silver lining: a Dunkin Donuts! We drank perfectly brewed ice coffee and ate raspberry jelly sugar donuts. We asked what train we could ... read more
