BATU CAVES, SALANGOR, MALAYSIA. Friday 24 February, 2012. We made it to Batu Caves this morning. This series of caves is located in a limestone hill, 13 km north of KL in the Selangor district. The limestone is some 400 million years old. The 3 main caves take their name from the Sungai Batu or Batu River which flows past the hill. The cave entrance is reached by 272 concrete steps. At the bottom of the steps is a gold statue of Lord Murugan. At 42.7 m (140 foot) high, it is the world's tallest statue of Murugan - a Hindu Deity. We were exhausted when we got to the top of the steps. As you climb the steps you are constantly hounded by the local troops of Cynomolgus/Macaque Monkeys. They will snatch anything that is ... read more

Last week, I went back to KL to submit my thesis. I got an SMS from my dad telling me that after Iftar at our house, I should bring the kids & my mum to the Equatorial Bangi since he had a 3 day conference there and they allocated him a big room. The kids were excited of course, they love staying in hotels. After making a U-turn at Shah Alam (yes! people I actually missed the Sungai Besi toll and ended up in Shah Alam), we managed to find the Bangi exit and the Equatorial easily thanks to the good signage. The kids had a great time just playing around. The grounds were beautiful and the kids pool was really nice. Some hotels have a wading pool that is to me, still too deep for ... read more

Broga is the small town that's sit on border Selangor and Negeri Sembilan in Malaysia. It's situated 50 kilometers from Kuala Lumpur. Broga Hill is located before Broga town. It's not tough to hike and it takes roughly 30 to 45 minutes to reach at the first lookout point. There are have three to four lookout point to faced up. Each point have slightly different view and the further you go up, you'll see a fabulous landscape created. I always seem to get some sort of illness when I come to this hot, humid and sticky environment. It can range from an upset tummy to heat bumps located in uncomfortable regions. This time it was a sweat rash, after spending a whole weekend in the Sun at the Grand Prix. My family seemed to be competing in a gurning contest, when they saw my arms. Awful night sleep, intense itching and constant showers was my routine for a few days. Thankfully, it soon cleared up and hopefully I will not get it again. The plan was to have no plan for the following couple of weeks. Every time I was asked where I wanted to go, I replied, "Wherever you take me, I'll be happy". This developed due to the fact that backpacking, by ... read more

From one world sporting event to another, although they could not be more different. Being from the UK, the Grand Prix was never economically practical to attend, at Silverstone. Arriving in Malaysia on race weekend and cheap tickets gave me the opportunity I had been waiting for. Having navigated my way to my family's original home town of Seremban, my Auntie (Mak Teh) and Uncle Ali were waiting for me. It is such a pleasure to be greeted by beaming smiles, even though it was two o'clock in the morning. Their house has got to be my second home. This is the house that my Dad even stayed in, when he visited Malaysia for the first time, nearly thirty years ago. I already felt comfortable. Early the next day I was to be picked up by ... read more

... read more

With our Langkawi tour over, we headed back to Kish's uncle's house where we had stayed previously. We had an 8 hour coach journey from Kuala Perlis to Kuala Lumpur in one of the lushest coaches I have ever seen where each seat practically reclined into a bed, which was nice seeing as the journey went from 9pm to 5am! So we slept the whole way to KL and then slept some more back at the house we were staying at in Kota Kemuning. After some well deserved rest we headed out to check out a shopping centre called Sunway Pyramid which was a b s o l u t e l y huge! It had 5 floors full of shops, 10 cinema screens and an archery range, easy to get lost in but with enough ... read more
