This week started off at a relaxed pace - the usual cleaning of quarantine and environmental enrichment. On Monday we went on a night frog trek at Kubah National Park, where we sighted many huge river frogs including some rarer species. Apparently it is better to try and find them at night, as their eyes reflect in the darkness making them easier to track down. We also saw an eel, fireflies and a wild civet on the prowl. However the trek involved a steep walk up a hill 900 feet above sea level! We all had our last meal together as two of the volunteers were leaving the following morning (Ryan and Dave). Tuesday was spent feeding chickens to the crocodiles - an interesting experience not to be repeated! Matt the macaque was in a particularly ... read more

Travelled back to Kuching - due to downpour on Sunday morning at Damai! Walked along the riverfront, looked at the waterfront stalls and main bazaar. Then went to pizza restaurant in evening before returning back to a surprise a Matang - unfortunately one of the cats had spent the weekend in our chalet! However Daisy had helped herself to some of our food supplies. We both spent the evening clearing up after this occurrence!... read more

On Friday afternoon we decided to escape to the haven known as 'Damai beach', where we resided in a lovely homestay for two nights called Nanga. Nanga Damai Homestay There was a lovely tropical garden, waterfall and poolside - just pure relaxation. The homestay had five lively dogs who guarded the property, and we had our own private balcony with a view of the South China sea - a very friendly homestay. Friday was spent by the pool, and then we walked up to the local seafood restaurant where we enjoyed Singapore noodles (curry), jungle fern and prawns. On Saturday we got a lift down to Damai beach where we went swimming for a short while in the choppy sea - but very warm. Lovely view of the nearby mount Santubong. More noodles for lunch! Then ... read more

On Thursday we cleaned quarantine as usual - today we were cleaning the three macaques. Boboy assisted by grabbing Ellie's leg. Most people have gone off the macaques due to their cheeky and aggressive behaviour! Generally they are fine though as long as you avoid direct eye contact - as they view this as a threat. Then we were fortunate enough to have the day off to do some sightseeing. First stop was the Windcaves - here we saw some impressive stalactites and numerous bats hiding in the cave crevices. Then we visited the crocodile farm - not a firm favourite (as some crocs were destined to become belts & handbags), although the animals were kept in a good condition in reasonably sized enclosures. Here we sighted some enormous crocodiles, along with various other animals - ... read more

Monday was shopping day and every week we all try to buy something unusual and interesting. This week Ellie bought some green/brown knobbly fruits and it wasn't until we brought them home that we noticed the awful smell. It was very unpleasant - best described as cats urine, rotten eggs or a rubbish bin, and therefore we swiftly removed them from the house and placed them on the veranda. We later found out that these were Durians, a fruit loved by locals and orangutans but not by us! We could still smell them from outside, the smell wafting into our room. So we fed them to Chaim, Doris and Aman who enjoyed the snack! We also managed to gain a quick cuddle from Gus. Apart from the strange fruits, we have also had an escapee on ... read more

One of the best ways to enjoy nature is to take to the water, so today we decided to go Kayaking with Kuching Kayaks.KuchingKayak After being picked up at 8.00am we were taken further out from Kuching to where the river meanders through the forest. Ellie and I had a two man kayak and after safely putting our camera in a watertight box we set off. The journey was fantastic with the river interspersed with logs and stones creating small currents for us to navigate around. After about 45 minutes we stopped for a refreshing swim in the cool waters before heading onwards. Looking up you could see the clear blue sky, between the tree canopy and occasionally the odd bird darting across the sky. On the banks the limestone rocks had been worn into all ... read more

Today we spent the day exploring Kuching further - Cat city! We walked along the river front, viewing the local bazaars and then visited a coffee shop in China town - the street is decorated with numerous Chinese lanterns. A lot of the shops are currently closed at present due to the Chinese New Year celebrations which have lasted a week. Many of the locals release random fireworks in the streets to mark this celebration. Then we took a 30 minute walk to the local weekend market which was heaving with people. On sale were a variety of exotic fruits and vegetables, meat, textiles, crafts, orchids and pets. We also sampled some nut pancakes from one of the stalls. The market is an important social occasion for many of the locals, full of bright colours and ... read more

It has been another eventful week at Matang Wildlife Centre. We have continued our work improving the Sun Bear enclosure, making platforms and building steps. We have also been decorating the orangs indoor enclosures. Nick has rediscovered his artistic talents and has painted rainforest flowers, a beach/rainforest scene and some modern art, whilst Ellie has focused on the more funky designs. Orangs see in colour so painting their sleeping quarters adds extra interest to their environment when they are not in their enclosures. Unfortunately when painting an orangutans den, it is not as easy as it seems. We had a little help from Doris who kept on flicking mud at us and from baby Mamu who was climbing above us and occasionally decided to release herself on you if you happened to be in the wrong ... read more

The first few days of the week have been quite eventful for one of the cats in our street..... There are several cats who live at Matang and they all have very interesting personalities. Firstly there is the Daisy family - Daddy Daisy, Mummy Daisy, Baby Daisy and Baby Daisy's babies - they are all tabbies and some have short tails which bend oddly at the ends - this apparently is some sort of genetic characteristic of these local cats. Secondly there is Lewis, a black & white rival male to daddy Daisy and lastly there is Wanda a beautiful tortoiseshell..... On our arrival back from Bako on Sunday we were greeted by the Sound of Meowing from the house opposite which belongs to the other volunteers. Unfortunately after further investigation it appeared that Wanda must ... read more

"The bats have left the bell tower, The victims have been bled" ("Bela Lugosi's Dead", Bauhaus; song released August 1979.) The biggest draw for tourists in Sarawak on the island of Borneo is the Gunung Mulu National Park.(Click here for link). It is a remote area of tropical rain-forest of great biodiversity that contains remarkable Karst formations and caves. The caves are some of the largest in the world. The Sarawak Chamber is the world’s largest natural chamber within a cave, whilst the Deer Cave is the world’s largest natural cave passage. Within the Deer Cave live millions of bats. They emerge every day (when it's not raining), to put on a spectacular display. They stream out of the Deer Cave and make patterns in the twilight , black streamers and circl... read more
