Malaysian Borneo is truly a magical place - where headhunting was around until 100 years ago, and tribal lifestyles are still celebrated (albeit with less decapitation). It was very much an outpost for the colonial British, and is much more rustic and less developed than peninsular Malaysia. For those of you like me who didn't know, the island of Borneo is divided between Malaysia (~50%), Indonesia (~50%) and Brunei (~0%). We started off in Kota Kinabalu, a large regional city. It's a pretty laid back place that has a small downtown that's easily walkable with a great food market on the waterfront. KK as it's called, has some quaint restaurants (and even a Starbucks, so that was a treat!). After some sightseeing int he area (and a foiled attempt to climb Mt. Kinabalu as we ... read more

We were looking forward to Borneo as it was always a place on our wishlist and we had originally thought we wouldn't be able to afford it this year. It was also a welcome change from the pavement pounding concrete jungle of mainland Malaysia. We landed in the northern State of Sabah and headed to Sepilok, home of the Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, to start Borneo with a bang. This centre rehabilitates orphaned, injured or displaced Orangutans through gradually reducing their human contact. One stage of this process is regular feeding at three different platforms. Visitors are allowed to observe feeding time at the closest platform and several Orangutans normally swing in, some to show off to the crowd, some taking more than their share of bananas and some taking their first steps towards independence. The ... read more

It was cheaper to fly from Malaysia than Singapore, so I needed to cross the border back to the Malaysian side in order to catch a flight to Borneo, my next destination and the third largest island in the world. I had been fascinated about Borneo ever since were read about it in the geography on the fourth class (aged 10). Why I had been so interested in the place I couldn’t remember, but it probably had something to do with the hard-to-reach rainforests, head-hunters, orang utangs and wild tigers. The island has been divided between three countries: Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei. I decided to stay on the Malaysian side, mainly because I had heard that the Indonesian side is pretty similar to it and small Sultanate of Brunei is simply boring. In East Malaysia (i.e. ... read more

Kuching to Miri to Bario to Long Manamut I went from Bako to the tiny town of Bario via Miri (where i met and joined forces with a Swiss called Fred). Bario is a kooky place. It was completely isolated from the west until the second World war when english paratroopers dropped in and gave the locals guns to fight off the invading Japs. Even now there is no road connecting Bario to the coast so the only way in is by air. This is made all the more ridiculous when you realise that all metal, furniture and cars must be flown in. About a thousand people live there and when we flew in we found one of the nicest: Nancy. she put us up and arranged everything. Nearby villages are more primitive and most are ... read more

UntitledThe last time I wrote my blog I was in Kuching waiting to visit a Taoist psychic session. Since then I have broken the CD containing the only copies of my photos (FUCK!), visited a tribe, scuba dived and read a couple of books. My lack of updates has been because of busyness, tiredness and lacking of internet cafes. So today I have done 4 and dated them roughly from when I wrote them. On the 8th june at about 9pm Ho Minh (my link to the psychic world of Borneo) picked up me, Harriet and Paddy. Harriet and Paddy were a dutch/english couple who stayed at the same backpackers and had witnesed the whole Jade debaucle and expressed interest in the paranormal. Ho drove us to his brothers house where we had an hour to ... read more

Just to tie of the end of our Malaysian adventures... We headed out of KL's LCC terminal after a huge fight with air asia over their puny 15Kg luggage allowance and having to fork out 240 ringgits to get on the plain (this actually took so long to resolve that we very almost missed our plane out and they said that they wouldn't refund us for the following flights). We arrived, a little hastled, in Sandakan in the Sabah district of Malaysian Borneo (you actually have to go through immigration again and get yet more stamps in the passport). The airline also conspired to break our wheely ruck sack hand luggage so we had a long tussle to get them to agree to fix it and had to dump all of the stuff out of it ... read more

A bit of info/history i found on the net:- Gazetted as a protected area on 1 May 1957 and was published to public on 4 may 1957. Bako is Sarawak's oldest national park, covering an area of 2,727 hectares at the tip of the Muara Tebas peninsula, about 45 min drive from Kuching city. It is one of the smallest national park in Sarawak, yet one of the most interesting as it contains almost every type of vegetation found in Borneo. Bako is also home to approximately 150 rare proboscis monkey, found only in Borneo. The male is an odd looking creature with a huge pendulous nose and a large pot belly weighting in excess of 20 kg. I managed to spot a group of them while trekking back to the park HQ. Too bad ... read more

Sunday we got up & walked to the bus station to get the bus to the airport & got our flight to Miri, we got a bus into Miri & checked into a place listed in the Lonely Planet, it wasn't very nice but still we had air con & a TV! We went out for dinner & everywhere was closed, we managed to find a shopping mall where we grabbed some food in the supermarket & headed home to watch TV. On Monday, (after a terrible nights sleep), we went to the Visitors information Centre to find out about diving, trips to the National Parks, (Niah Caves & Lambir Hills) & buses to Brunei. We had a bit of a lie in so decided to spend Monday around Miri Centre; we walked to the ... read more

We landed in Miri at lunch time on Sunday and had to wait an hour for the local bus to take us into town. A short walk later and we were staying in a small room, with air con and satellite TV, although it wasn't the cleanest of rooms. We chilled out for a bit and watched some dodgy film with Harrison Ford in it before deciding to head out. Everywhere seemed deserted, whilst walking up a quiet street a dog jumped out at us, I grabbed Erica’s arm to pull her away, luckily it only wanted to bark at us but still caused us to panic. We carried on walking until we saw a MacDonald’s sign, thinking at least we were going to be able to eat this evening. We headed towards it and ... read more

We landed in Kuching about 10.30am & by the time we had got our bags, got the bus into town & walked to the hostel it was just before midday. We had a shower & then had a sleep as spending the night in the airport never gets you a good night sleep but works out more cost efficient. We ended up sleeping till about 3.30pm, a combination of the heat & tiredness had made us sleep for a good three hours. We headed out to explore Kuching, we had a look around a couple of shopping malls, as Kuching is supposed to be a good place to buy in Borneo, although we didn't buy anything. We went to a bar for dinner & were told of a special promotion, for 25 Ringitt each, (just ... read more
