We had spent Tuesday night in the Kota Kinabalu airport where there we no restaurants open, so by the time we had boarded the airplane we were starving, we ordered some noodles and a sandwich each, which hardly touched the sides they went down so fast. It was then a short bus journey to Kuching town centre and we had no problem finding some accommodation. The first thing we did was to have a power nap as we hadn't got much sleep the night before. We woke up around 3pm and decided to head out, we walked along the waterfront which was quite scenic and made our way to several shopping centres but nothing caught our eye. We had dinner at a lovely grill place where we had a Carlsberg buffet, yes all you could ... read more

04/04/07 - We flew from Miri to Mulu. Arrived at the Park HQ about 2pm and headed straight out for the 2 cave guided tours. Very well set up National Park with well maintained pathways. We had met an Italian couple (Stefano & Elisa) in Miri at the Guesthouse who were also going to Mulu at the same time as us. We did a couple of Caves one of them being Deer Cave which has the largest Cave entrance in the world apparently.. this was the home of millions of bats (im not kidding!), so around 6pm we all waited for the main attraction of the day - which was the bats flying out of the cave to feed at night (see pictures) - we waited and waited and waited - finally they made an ... read more

After our night stay in Sibu we left earlyand traveled to Miri which took about 7 hours. Comfortably journey in big Air-Con coach with regular pit stops. When we arrived we travelled to Highland Guesthouse by taxi and the driver was a real character. We were chatting away to him when he asks "Do you believe the Americans landed on the Moon?" we were a little thrown by the random question. We discuss and then he gives us this A4 typed Report he wrote listing why it was a fake! Well it was funny at the time - maybe you had to be there. Spent the late afternoon frantically trying to organise our trip to Mulu - got it sorted and rewarded ourselves with a gorgeous Meal! We vowed we'd go back when we returned ... read more

Hi Im back with an update so far... we've been on a mini adventure to a Longhouse. 31/03/07 - From Kuching we caught a boat to Sibu (5 hours!) and then one straight away to Kapit (3 hours!) This was after our night out drinking Champagne in Kuching so our heads were in pieces! We had read that it was good to visit a Longhouse as far away from Kuching City as possible for a "authentic" experience. We also read to speak to a guy called Joshua who was backpacker friendly and unlikely to rip you off.... 01/04/07 - So we finally track Joshua down and find out he's pretty pricey as we'd been offered cheaper elsewhere. We manage to haggle and knock him down, so we're all set to leave at 3pm. When we ... read more

Bako National Park Asia » Malaysia » Borneo » Kuching » Bako By Sophia CMarch 29th 2007Around the World Got up early this morning to get bus/boat to Bako, now I realise I have definately packed too much. Really struggled running to find the right bus. Fortunately the Malay run on "rubberband time" so the bus hadnt turned up yet and we were early. We met a Swedish couple, Lin and Nick, who were also going to Bako so we decided to share a taxi minibus which was much quicker. After bus we had to get a boat ride to the National Park, amazing way to arriv... read more

So after a long flight from Heathrow to Kuala Lumpur (KL) then KL to Kuching we finally made it to Borneo. Great flight with Malaysian Airlines - nice food for a change and great choice of stop/start movies. I didnt sleep as watched atleast 5!!! Kuching is in Sarawak - Malaysian Borneo and this is where our travels begin. Stayed in Anglican Guest House - very basic, very cheap 25 RM which is about 4pounds for the 2 of us! The shower was basically a hose pipe stuck on the wall. Am taking this roughing it well so far, well it is only day1! ... read more

So, at last I now have some spare time (trust me this traveling can be quite hectic especially when you visit 7 countries in 6 weeks) to continue my online story.. After leaving Thailand we spent the next 2 weeks exploring a little bit more of South East Asia... We traveled from Thailand by overnight train through to the Malaysian port of Butterworth, just across from Penang Island where we then took a flight to Malaysian Borneo, the home of the Proboscis monkey, the orangutan, Sipidan and some great jungle..well, what there is left of it. We started first in Kota ... read more

In the last two days at the centre we finished painting the park sign and enjoyed a few more treats. This included visiting Gunung Gading National Park on Thursday to view the world's largest flower - the Rafflesia which was luckily in flower. The blooms only last for a couple of days and the plants only flower every couple of months so we were very fortunate to see it. Our flower was only 60cm diameter but they can be as big as 90cm wide. We also spent some extra time with Doris - the 7 year old orangutan which was wonderful. Nick played on the ropes, whilst Doris kept flipping backwards onto the ground trying to gain attention. She was in a particularly playful mood (although slightly bitey) - and covered in mud. She is particularly ... read more
