Got up early this morning and got on our bus to the jungle... AHHHHHH! It took about 5 hours to arrive at Batang AI, we had a few stops on the way at some food markets, which was delicious. We had to wait over an hour for the long boats to arrive, Liz and Rose did not join us on this part of the trip, so there was me, Faye, Sarah, Gemma, Leo (our guide) and unfortunately for us Howard and Fiona which you will understand when you read more of my jungle stay. Three longboats arrived to pick us all up, I shared one with Howard and Fiona, they were quite scary and very unstable, it took over an hour to get to our home for the week, but the views were amazing, just jungle, ... read more

This morning we went to Semenggoh National Park where the Orangs are semi wild, there are none kept in cages, it is a jungle environment with just a walkway for us to see a feeding platform. As soon as we arrived there were 4 Orangs (2 Mums with their toddlers) we watched them for an hour eating and playing in the trees, it was an incredible sight, we had to leave at 10am to give them some peace. We went back to the lodge where we had the rest of the day to ourselves. Sarah, Gemma and I wandered round Kuching as we had the afternoon to ourselves, we stopped for a late lunch, where I had a coke float which was very questionable!!! We played some cards back at the lodge and some pool. Then ... read more

This morning we left for Matang, about a 40 min drive away, it's a rehab center mostly for Orangs and Sun Bears but they do have other animals there too. We met a huge male Orang called Aman who this year was the first to have a cataract operation in both eyes, he's had a rough life and used to just sit in the same corner of his enclosure all the time, now he has his eye sight he catches mosquitoes and butterflies and uses the whole of his huge enclosure. We saw a couple more Orangs, they have 7 in total, most of them were in the jungle, having there daily training, Gus one of the babies, has just started his training on how to climb trees. We had lunch down at the river, it ... read more

The taxi arrived to take us to the airport at 11am, Julie and Maz waved us off, very sad saying goodbye, but will see Julie again after Borneo in KL. We met Howard and Fiona and Liz and Rose at the aiport, they seemed to enjoy their zoo and we told them all about our time at Negara. We got on our flight and were picked up by taxi and taken to the Singgahsana Lodge, which was fantastic, I shared a room with Sarah, gemma and Faye have a fireman's pole in their room and a den up some stairs as well, very cool, a nice bar upstairs, has a pool table and tv, there's hammocks and places to lay everywhere. We all went upstairs to the bar and met leo, who is our guide and ... read more

Laksa is the first thing that comes to my mind when I wake up on a Sunday morning. It's the first word I utter when my eyes open. Both Nee and I like simplicity and consistency. Simplicity and ease in deciding where to eat. Consistency in sticking to the same thing when it's good. Another word for that is just being plain lazy. So every Sunday has become our Laksa day. It makes things simple because we don't have to think about what to eat and where to go. (How to blog like this. Eat also lazy.) I don't know where the word Laksa comes from. I've always thought because it was spicy hot (Lak), you'd stick your tongue out and go 'sa sa'. Silly I know. Nee says: Laksa is very Sarawak Kuching dish. The ... read more

Upon Dave's fantastic suggestion of finding a beach shack somewhere in Asia, I was convinced that I should try to discover a bit of Asia before my Aussie visa runs out. When else will tickets be so cheap? So I booked super cheap Tiger Air tickets, Darwin to Singapore, and off to Malaysia I went! I started out on the trip after a 22-hour Greyhound ride up to Darwin from Alice. Had some interesting conversations during those long hours; the most interesting was chatting with the driver who used to guide for big tour company. So I didn't get much sleep and arrived in Darwin pretty tired. In the couple of hours there, I ended up running into people I knew, which was a great way to pass the time before my 3:15am flight. Why most ... read more

Kuching is symbolised by the Cat and the city makes the most of this with statues of Cats in many of the park areas. Unfortunately I spent most my time looking at four walls of Alai Backpackers B&B after catching flu and been laid low (cat napping!) for 6 of the 10 days I spent in Kurching. I was looking to have been pointed at Alai Backpackers as a place to stay because from the start I was welcomed like family by Vivian and Tony and so when I fell ill I received plenty of care and so didn't suffer any of the usual horrendous of been ill away from home and having no TLC. I loved Kuching. The waterfront area was a picture at sunset and as I started to recover and manage to walk ... read more

Gunung Mulu National Park, (52,000 Ha) in Sarawak encompasses incredible caves and karst formations in a mountainous equatorial rainforest setting. I arrived in Mulu at a small airport in the middle of the jungle and safely made it to the park where I was informed to put my bags in my room and get ready for our first cave visit. It all felt a bit rushed but I am glad I did it on arrival at Mulu because otherwise I would have missed the seeing the Bat Exodus from the caves at dusk - subsequent days the rains meant the bats stayed cozy in there cave homes. So after a quick change me and a Malaysian guy named Low headed for a tour of Deer and Lang caves. Both caves are really beautiful and spectacularly large ... read more

Have just returned from a week spent deep in the Borneo rainforest, yrt another amazingly cool experience. Another one of the places (after Prague, Lake Baikal, Mongolia and Wolong) where I could have stayed much longer. We flew to Kucking in Sarawak, Borneo almost two weeks ago and spent a few days here - very sweet town and the hostel, Singgahsana Lodge, is by far the best I've stayed in. We visited the Semangoah Orangutan rehabilitation centre where the orangs live in the semi-wild and can be viewed when feeding and the Matang Wildlife Centre where they work on the rehabilitation and possible eventual release of orangs - they had two of the coolest orangutans I've seen, Gus and adorable 2 year old female and Aman, a monster of 140kg who used to be blind but ... read more

The town of Kuching derives its name from the Malay word for cat and early investigations of its streets, after our ferry ride from Sibu, revealed cat motifs aplenty ranging from discreet logos on manhole covers to rather alarming giant cat statues on roundabouts. The peak of this cat mania was reached at the Kuching Cat Museum, housed in the Town Hall that itself resembled a spaceship. The museum's collection was comprehensive, with exhibits about cats in various civilizations, stages in a cat's life, common ailments, wild members of the cat family, catfish, and a mock-up of a catwalk with 3 models wearing cat-themed outfits. Umpteen cat sculptures and paintings included a good selection of maneki neko or "beckoning cats" (the ones with raised paws that you often see in Chinese and Japanese restaurants and are ... read more
