Fri 19th Last night wemet the other half of the new group- Luc, Nathalie and Eric from french canada and Michelle from Aus. We had an early start to drive to river where we boarded weird bots that were the top half of aroplans with thee seats stuck onto boats. I got the front sleep and sleped for the first 3hr boat ride. We stoped in a small town for some food and to by sarongs and these completely rubber shoes called Addidas Campong. Then back on a different but same type of boat for about 4 hours. I sat on the roof for a bit of the trip which was good as it was sunny!!! Finaly we got into long boats to take us to Mulu park HQ what had nice big rooms and a ... read more

How To Solve A Problem Like Monica Loyal readers may or may not recall a somewhat oblique reference to the slightly scary, women-hating, obsessive-compulsive German ghost lady who our heroes wound up sharing a dorm room with (amongst others) in Kota Kinabalu. Monica was an older lady of about 40-50 years, dressed in traditional white Islamic garb, whose activities consisted solely staying in the hostel all day, bleaching her clothes (including her shoes), and not speaking to anyone. Helen and the female staff at the hostel were less than complimentary in return, but, personable chaps that they are, Louis and Jamie took it upon themselves to make some polite small talk, as she seemed pretty lonely. It transpired that she had been travelling more or less non-stop since 1989, and this despite the fact that she ... read more

Hey KIDS(sorry the shift key keeps sticking in this busy little internet cafe in the local wisma- a big air con shopping mall. IT IS WHERE all the locals hang out to escape the heat. we are in miri, arrived on sunday afternoon, found a ride from brunei with a news paper delivery truck. I am seeing so much here, so many new sights and smells, i have realized how small new zealnd is andhow much we take for granted about our way of life. - so many people here are really poor, i mean to the bone poor. a wage here can be as little as 10 rgt a day that is about 5$ new zealdand. "Ex-SAS types with easy smiles and expensive watches - Rolex? Omega." Ouch. When Jamie and I planned our trip it was mutually concluded that New Years should be spent somewhere busy, with the potential to provide a memorable night (for good reasons). Consideing our location in peninsular Malaysia the capital, Kuala Lumpur, was the only real candidate and so we booked our tickets out of KL to Borneo for the 2nd. Stuck with this schedule, we ended up staying a little too long in the hot, dirty city. Now, when you have so little responsibility in your life the concept of dates begins to fade and so I'm going to reconstruct the last few days as I see fit. Mat: After Mt Kinabalu Trace and I had 7 days before we had to fly out to Bangkok to meet up with Nicki. So we decided to book a flight back to KK from the Mulu National Park in Sarawak, and head there overland via Brunei and Miri (in Sarawak). After catching the ferry from KK and a bus, we spent a night and the next morning in the capital city of Brunei. We then shared a private car to Miri with a very friendly Malay woman from KL who was visiting her baker boyfriend in Bandar. Once in Miri we headed to a great backpackers called the Highlands, which is run by a Kiwi pilot living in Sarawak. Once there we tried to figure out the logistics of getting to Mulu. I started talking with ... read more

Ok, THIS is the shortest email blast yet!! I haven't even thought of what I want to say, but first off wanted to say I am truely sorry for not writing sooner (except of course to reply individually to you all wonderful, caring individuals...). I will be away from internet access for about 4 days, and with the amazing amount of response and inquiries I have received, I figured I should let everyone know NOW I am heading to the Philippines in early January to aid with the relief efforts after two destructive typhoons have hit the area within the last couple of weeks. The same organization I was with in Thailand after the tsuanmi as well as after Hurricane Katrina in the Gulf States is in the Philippines as we speak. They are working out ... read more

Trace: While Mat was busy getting the blood drained out of him by jungle leaches, I decided to instead head on a shorter trip (3 day tramp) in Mulu National Park to see the limestone pinnacles, massive caves, and 3 million bats! I ended up joining a guided trek with several other NZĂ©rs. Luckily for me, they were super friendly and one of them had a digital camera (Tim has kindly emailed me his shots!), as Mat had our camera with him for his trip to Bario. The limestone caves at Mulu are magnificent, one has the largest cave entrance in the world. Didn't get up close and personal with any bats unfortunately, but did really enjoy watching the endless twisting ribbon of them flying out from the cave entrance just on sunset (see pic). Just to let everyone know I am alive and doing well, despite the Typhoon Durian being one country away. It hit hard in the Philippines just last week (with subsequent mudslides burying entire villages!), hit in southern Vietnam a few days ago, and from what I hear on the news, is heading towards the Gulf of Thailand. I am in the middle of monsoon season here on Borneo, East Malaysia. There are rains every day, but no signs of any danger. That's it on the blast. Sorry. Stilll behind on "blast news" from three weeks ago. I should be finished with the latest installment soon. Happy Holidays to all and Season's Greetings from Sarawak, Borneo! I hope this short note finds everyone doing well and looking forward to the upcoming holiday season.... read more

The previous week we were in Kuching, Sarawak province where we explored the city and a few parks. Nice quiet place and we stayed at the Borneo B & B which was fantastic. Very cosy and we met some nice people. An Irish couple, Vincent and Alva, and an English guy, Jason. Jason is quite the guy. Just been traveling for god only knows how long. Any country someone mentioned, he had been there for 6 months. He should write a book about his travels. He could tell you the roads to take to get to pretty much everywhere. He was in DesertStorm, he was a firefighter, he was a parajumper... Everything. He was such a nice guy and very helpful and fun to talk to. One of our lazy days, all of us went to ... read more
