Early start, bus to airport, small Focker 50 prop plane for short but scenic hop over the jungle to National Park. Walked in the canopy of the forest along high tree-top walkways. Walked to Lang Cave, amazing formations. Enormous Deer cave inhabited by bats. Stunning 'Garden of Eden' view at other end of cave. Back outside to watch the bats streaming out at dusk. Dinner back at camp. Me and Mark torment huge secada bugs flying round the lodge, and watched bats swooping in to eat them.... read more

Since the last blog we have moved from Singapore to the considerably less air-conditioned steam bath that is Borneo. We flew into Kuching, Sarawak around a week ago and have really enjoyed wandering round the city exploring and deciding on our next move. A few days ago we headed to the Semangoggh (errr...or something like that - never got that one in spelling tests at school ....) Orang-utan Rehabilitation Centre around 30km south of Kuching. We first saw some mothers and babies feeding - a wonderful sight and truly fascinating to see their very human mannerisms. It was entertaining to watch as they worked out how to crack open a coconut, bashing it against a tree until they could get the flesh out. Next, we were taken to the feeding area in the jungle itself. This ... read more

Hello all! We have been having a very exciting time here in Borneo! We arrived in Kuching on Tuesday after getting a bus from Singapore to Johor Baru and then flying from there (much cheaper although we did have to go through immigration a silly number of times!). We are staying in a hostel called the B and B Inn which they are in the middle of painting, which would be fine if they put up wet paint signs all the time, but they only use them in places, so just when you think it's safe to sit, or touch - you get green fingers and a blue bum! Kuching is a really lovely city, clean and relaxed with lovely handicraft shops and waterside cafes. We spent the first couple of days visiting the museums and ... read more

Woken at stupid o'clock (6 am) by annoying alarm clock. Quick trip to the mangroves again, but no monkeys. Checked out and took the awaiting boat back across the bay, and taxi back to Kuching. Checked with the tourist office whether the Rafflesia flower was in bloom, unfortunately not, so had lunch then took a bus to Sibu further east. Stayed at the River Park Hotel. Had drinks and watched Bridget Jones on TV.... read more

Got up early and trekked along the beach to the mangrove swamps to see the proboscis monkeys with the big noses. Trekked in the searing heat for about 3.5km to the Tajor Waterfall, ate lunch, then hiked to Tajor beach where we played baseball with driftwood and coconut shells. Back to the lodge for dinner. Myself and Mark went on a night safari through the jungle where we saw a flying lemur, lizards and fire-flies.... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Sarawak » Bako National Park March 22nd 2006

After an eventful and tiring previous day, we got up late and checked out then went to the tourist office to plan the next few days in Sarawak. We booked 2 nights in Bako National Park where we could see the Proboscis monkey, found only on Borneo. After another egg & onion pancake to took a bus to Bako Village then a boat to the national park. We noticed some fish jumping out of the water near the boat and the next instant they were jumping into the boat and hitting us! Managed to pick up all the slippery characters and throw them back into the water. Arrived at a long sandy flat beach and checked into the park at the rangers office, took the key to our chalet and were greeted by a hoard of ... read more
