Kota Kinabalu & Kudat Sabah 20 – 22 March 2016 After our early morning flight from Sandakan we arrived in Kota Kinabalu (known as KK) at about 8.45am. After Catching A Taxi from the airport we checked into the Best Western Kinabalu Daya Hotel. It was very central – close to the harbour and the forest. We settled in then found “The Coffee Bean” in the next street for a fantastic coffee. It was then off to the Sunday Markets which was a street away. With 100s of stalls of costume jewellery, food, hardware, plants and clothes as well as 100s of people, the temperature and humidity rose. Despite that, we had a good look around. We went back to the hotel for a cold drink then headed up the 250m of stairs to see the ... read more

Geo: 5.97267, 116.071We got up early this morning, went to breakfast and ate too much from the buffet. Then we packed our bags for the day. Yesterday we booked a taxi and it was here on time. He was taking us to the pier for our snorkelling day trip. Here were found many westerners. We waited at the meeting spot and then someone from the dive company came over to us. He went through information for the day and then took us to the boat. I was pretty excited as it has been so long since I had been snorkelling. On the boat there were a few staff members, Rach and I and a small group of teenagers from Melbourne. We sat at the front of the boat and then we were off! As we cruised ... read more

Geo: 5.97267, 116.071This morning we took our time getting up. We then went to the restaurant for breakfast. Breakfast was a buffet, there was so many different foods to choose from. More than half of the foods were items that I wouldn't consider to be breakfast foods. We found plenty of food to eat. After a quick walk on the deserted beach, we went back to our room and prepared ourselves for our day out. Today was another warm day with blue sky. So far we have been really lucky and not experienced much tropical, torrential rain. On the way back to the room, I took quite a few photos of the gardens and its unique flowers. Once we were ready we walked through reception to get the resort minibus transfer into town. In the reception ... read more

Geo: 5.97267, 116.071It was a very short flight of only 45 minutes. Towards the end of the flight we had a great view of Kota Kinabalu. It is a well known mountain on the island that adventurous people like to climb. At Kota Kinabalu airport we collected our bags and got into a taxi. We were staying at a resort that was just out of town.We checked and were taken to our room. On the way we passed a nice looking pool and walked through well maintained gardens. There didn't seem to be many other guests around at the moment. It was now time for us to relax. We freshened up and walked to the bar and restaurant area which was by the beach. Here we ordered some cocktails and enjoyed the beautiful and peaceful ocean ... read more

Eek! Now, I have finished my Padi course, I can go out diving. We got up early again, I am so not used to this but it does make a nice change, and headed down to the dive shop. We had to pay for the dives that we were going to do today. Since we had dived with them before, we both got a bit of a discount. My friend got more as she had done more dives. Then we headed along to the Jesselton Point Waterfront and met up with the divemasters and the other divers at one of the cafes. We'd already had some breakfast, so didn't get any food. Once everyone was there, we headed down to the boats. They do a roll call and we were directed onto the correct boats. It ... read more

26th Dec: We woke up pretty early, after a late night. I must have been cold with the air-con on during the night as one time when I woke up, the blanket was wrapped around my head. I had a good laugh at myself. I hadn't realised that breakfast was included at the hostel, so that was a nice surprise. It was only toast and jam with coffee, but it saved us a few pennies. We had to be at the dive shop for about 8:15 am. Diving is early business, and I am not used to being productive in the morning, but I was excited and nervous for this. The dive shop was actually really close to our hostel, only about a five minute walk away. I got the impression that Kota Kinabalu is pretty ... read more

For the last couple of nights I've been staying in Kota Kinabalu, the capital of the eastern state of Sabah. The city itself is really quite small, but, incredibly busy. Upon arrival here, I had about 20 minutes to sort out what I needed to go on a tour of a city with a guide for a couple of hours. We started off by going across the road from my hotel to what looked like derelict land with a few pillars on it, my guide explained that this was one of the oldest buildings in Kota Kinabalu, but it burnt down in the 1990's, it previously housed all the historical maps of the area (thankfully kept in the vault and they weren't destroyed in the fire). Developers have tried the buy the land, but the local ... read more

Malaysia 2015 Day 1 EARCOS teachers conference Spring break arrived early for me, yay!! I registered for an international teacher's conference (EARCOS) in the beautiful, sunny, warm, blue sky friendly Sabah, Borneo, Malaysia! The first part of this blog is short and most of it is simply a summary of the conference. I flew to Malaysia on a Tuesday night from Mumbai. The flight was long and through Singapore, however Singapore Air is one of the best airlines in Asia with a lot of leg and seat space, great snacks and food and an awesome selection of movies, so I snuggled in my seat iPod and earplugs in place, kobo reader on my hands and enjoyed some music reading and movies. After an overnight flight mid morning of Wednesday, I arrived in sunny, warm, tropical, beautiful ... read more

This is a delayed post, as our climb up Kota Kinabalu was just 3 days before disaster of an Earthquake in the exact same area where we were, struck, taking away many innocent lives. The thought of it was chilling and my thoughts go out to all victims and their families. Felt it was only appropriate to delay my blog post till later. That's the unpredictable nature of nature isn't it? Anything can happen at anytime, even in the most unlikely places. And ever since my first encounters out in the wild, I've been brought up to always respect nature. Respect its beauty, its awe and understand that we are just small nuts and bolts of this massive ecosystem. Kota Kinabalu is an amazingly beautiful mountain. The view above the clouds, atop bare rocks near the ... read more

I came to Kota Kinabalu Sabah in Malaysia for a business trip, didn't plan for anything except working at night time in shopping mall Imago. Hence didn't prepare for any sightseeing venue or things to do in KK, but I bought my bikini because I knew I could go for a quick dip on the beach. One morning before it gets too hot and humid, I went for a walk to the ferry port, took a random ferry to the island which was 15 min ride. I met a Turkish traveller Dilek and we hung out on the island. Went for a swim and snorkel. The water was so refreshing, clear and clean. The coral and fishes were so wild!! We took a ferry and went to see few more islands - Gaya, Manukan, Mamutik, must ... read more
