Time to move on and start our adventures. Carole is keen to see an orang utan - not easy in the wild so we arrange to visit Shrangri La Rasa Ria Resort where there is a rehabilitation project. We leave the flat early - taxi £6 (10 minutes) into Kota Kinabalu to the bus station. No point in starting off the journey dripping with exhaustion. Buses going in different directions from the city start at different bus stations - so it is important to suss out just where you need to go to get the bus of your choice. We thought we knew - but fortunately our taxi driver put us right and took us to the exact spot. Each bus has the names of the places it drives between painted clearly on the side. They ... read more

VIDA'S BORNEO BLOG 2 The text for Blog 1 was done on iPad Pages and I could not cut and paste onto this travel blog. It is available on email. I sussed out the airport bus and surprised Carole at arrivals. I went early to find out more about car hire and local air transport for our later travels. It involved eating at KFC which is not to be recommended. I picked up my chicken leg and gnawed away but then noticed all the locals were picking off little bits of chicken with their fingers and eating it very delicately. (The locals don't as a rule use cutlery but eat with chop sticks or their fingers.) It is very easy to make a cultural faux pas. The estimated arrival time of Carole's Royal Brunei flight was ... read more

VIDA'S BORNEO BLOG - February to April 2015 http://www.travelblog.org/Bloggers/Vida I have now reviewed Blog 1 and added photos from the trip which highlight the wonderfully varied nature of my experiences in Borneo! Our adventure took us from the far northern tip of Borneo in Sabah, south through Brunei to Kuching in the far west of Sarawak. After wonderful long term travelling trips through India, Kenya, Central America, South America, Morocco, Thailand and SW USA I am excited to be off again to explore Borneo, the third largest island after Australia and Greenland. It doesn't look that big on the map as it sits on the equator and is not stretched out as is land nearer to the poles when we view it on the usual Mercator projection. This trip has come about because my long term ... read more

Geo: 5.97267, 116.071Dnes se probouzím s plánem jet dopoledne obhlednout přilehlé ostrovy a odpoledne se přesunout do Konabalu NP. Snídám v hostelu a vyrážím do přístavu. Cestou si tak přemýšlím nad cenou a jestli to vlastně za to bude stát, když vlastně pak poletím na Filipíny, kde je spousta ostrovů. Koukám tedy do LP a objevuji nedalekou vesničku lovců lebek. Hmm to nezní zle :). Přijíždím na konečnou a pt&#... read more

Geo: 5.97267, 116.071Cesta ze Singapore nakonec ubíhá překvapivě rychle a do KL se dostávám kolem 3:30... Hmm super. Přede mn... read more

Second leg of our little trip, and this time, no diving....but as you may guess, some diving coming pretty soon. I've never visited Kota Kinabalu in the past. Interesting enough, there is no direct flight from Thailand to Borneo, so it's never really a priority. We arrived late afternoon on the boat from Labuan. Our base for three nights, the 10 years old Meridien bang in the city center. Nothing much to write about the hotel beside the fact that it is a city hotel, providing us with more space than we need, a nice lounge to feed us, and easy connections for everything there is to see. We spent some time walking around the city. Well, not much to write about KK...there is nothing pretty about this city, it just do the job, but no ... read more

Queen Mary Day 12 The Ocean Liner moved gracefully in the early morning on its maiden visit to Kota Kinabalu and was greeted by several boats, mainly local water taxis. The water wasn’t the cleanest we have seen and we did see a school of large fish swimming near the boat as we prepared to drop anchor. The harbour had quite an array of smaller container ships, some laden and others empty. While we were anchoring a largish car ferry arrived “Straits Challenger”. Another great breakfast and then we headed to the assembly area to board the QM2’s tenders for a short trip to the dock where Tour Guides that were taking us on a guided tour met us and guided us to our coach. There were several organised tours, each designated by a number (ours ... read more

After four days of rustic living in the Kinebatagan Nature Lodge, jungle trekking and warding off leeches, mosquitoes, millipedes, snakes, spiders, and a bunch of other potential stuff that bites, it was quite an indulgence for us to take a ride on the refurbished North Borneo Rail steam engine train. The train ride was a taste of decadence and a flashback in time to the British Colonial era. All staff were costumed in early century era clothing, nostalgic music was playing, and whistles were blown as the conductor yelled out "All Aboard!" when we left the station. Each passenger received a passport for the four hour journey, which was stamped by the train conductor as we approached each of the train's five districts. Throughout the journey passengers were seated in fan-cooled dining cars, and waited on ... read more

When I am travelling I have two basic concerns: one is not getting sick, and the other is not getting into any trouble and / or having an accident that would cause us to return home sooner than planned. On Preventing Sickness : Pray to the Gods as loudly as you can, as many times as you can, and to as many Gods you can possibly remember so they will not bestow upon you the wretched curse of diarrhea! One prayer that had worked for me on our last trip went something like this: "0 almighty God, spare me from the curse." Beverly, my lovely wife, forgot to pray to the Gods and paid the nasty price last year in India. I think she now pretends to pray for forgiveness and makes promises to the Gods ... read more

An early start today to catch a plane to Kota Kinabalu, Northern Borneo, for some needed relaxation. Rainy and humid on arrival and a speed boat transfer to Gaya Island gave us a taste of what was to come. Every where we go Alice gets called Alex!... read more
