Getting there... The lady at the Mt Kinabalu HQ has warned us that the bus to Sandakan would be full, and that we would probably have to bite the bullet and call a taxi. But with a taxi for the 5-hour trip costing around US$150, we figured we'd be taking our chances with the bus. We were also looking forward to getting some sleep on the trip after a 2am start up to the peak, a late flight into Borneo and an early bus to the mountain the night before, no sleep on the Ro-ro the night before that, all topped off with 2 day hiking. It was pouring with rain as we waited under the small shelter for the bus headed for Sandakan, and after about half an hour of waiting, the bus came round ... read more

After much persuading on Steves part, I agreed that it would be fun to take a boat down the Kinabatangan river into the heart of Borneo rainforest. We were put up in a jungle lodge which turned out to be a really nice room and did two boat safari's, one at sunset and the other at sunrise. My fears of tarantulas were laughed away by our guide who said that they dont live there. Put at ease I actually started to enjoy myself. The rainforest is home to the proboscis monkey and Sabah is the only place in the world that you can see them in the wild. It is also home to long tailed macaques, crocodiles, snakes, gibbons, leopards and elephants but the last three are very elusive. We got to see a crocodile in ... read more

So after climbing the Kinabalu Mountain, Remy and I head back to KK for some relaxation, we check into a nice hotel, with hot water, and air-con. That day both of us had troubles walking up stairs or even the slightest incline for that matter. I then remember something from the Rinjani Volcanoe, (the next day my legs where sore, but the day after they where really sore) So I am expecting it when the following day comes, and I can hardly walk. Remy had a flight to catch, leaving me once again, without a travel companion. No problem, the shape I am in, I don’t want to talk to anyone, or do anything. So I spend another night in the nice hotel, before booking back into the Summer Lodge Hostel. I love that place because ... read more

I woke up quite early that day, as we were in bed by 10pm the night before, and after breakfast we got everything ready to take to our 3 days wildlife camp. Before departing on our wildlife adventure, lunch was included at Uncle Tan's base camp, which was absolutely delicious. If this was going to be the kind of food we were going to have, I was very very pleased. Just before departing on our minibus started raining very heavily and we knew the boat had no roof, so we thought we were going to be for a very wet ride! When we got to the jetty they started giving us some bin liners to cover our bags so that they wouldn't get wet on the way to the camp. It rained most of the way ... read more

Life is full of surprises! Your learn about yourself everyday and sometime it is just about giving it a try, pushing the boundaries and you surprisingly end up discovering that you are up to new experiences! Decided to go for the jungle safari about a week before departing for Borneo, truly scared by snakes and spiders and well mosquito tend to love me (or my blood...pick one!) so ones would say I might not be the perfect ‘candidate’ for a jungle safari…Guess, it was just a question to give it a try! Simply loved it and wish I could actually have spent more time there! But back to the initial journey…Although Borneo might seem as next door when you are based in China…well, that was a long long journey…but so worth it! Night flight to Kuala ... read more

We have just returned from the most incredible experience in the rainforest at Kinabatangan. We stayed at a lodge on the river which is the longest in Malaysia and took part in several river trips, walks in the forest in day time and night time. The highlight was our last evening river trip when Nelson - our guide, found a solitary male orang utang chilling out in a tree on the edge of the river. He was about 30 years old, with the full leathery 'mask' and took absolutely no notice of us whatsoever. It was INCREDIBLE! He looked as if he had no cares in the world, he was perched in a fork in the tree, with lots of fruit growing around him, so no need to move much. Wow! ( have photos which I ... read more

Our next stop was at the Kinabatangan river for a 3 days camp at a place called Uncle Tans. We started by going to yet another Orangutan sanctuary (There are only 4 in the world so we've now been to half !). Before heading downriver to the camp. It was basic accomodation, a matress on the floor, six people to a hut and river water to wash in ! But the food was good and we saw plenty of animals. Day and night cruises were all good and it's amazing what lives very close to camp (See photo's) we even stayed up late one night to watch a civet cat come in to raid the bins ! Met loads of great people as well but we seemed to be the only boat that didn't see wild ... read more

If Bako (national park) is foil then Uncle Tan's is heavy metal, cause it rocks!! Sorry about that, what a lame way to start - let me explain. Since arriving in Malaysia we have spent a good proportion of our time in the jungle, even more so in Borneo. We have loved every second of it but none more so than our last three days on the Kinabatangan river at Uncle Tan's famous jungle camp. Bako probably had the edge for beauty but in so many other ways, not least the diversity of in your face wildlife, Uncle Tan's has been our highlight. As mentioned before the camp itself is situated just off the lower Kinabatangan river on a beautiful ox-bow lake, though when we were there it was hard to tell what was lake from ... read more

Date visited: 22nd April - 23rd April Another mission travelling day: 6am start for the coach to a nearby town. 2 long local buses over 2 hours. A 3 hour plane trip. Eventually we land in the northern Malaysian state of Sabah, Borneo. Our plane dropped us off in Sandakan, a city on the East Coast of Sabah and our jumping off point for the region's Jungle activities. We arrived early and feeling pretty upbeat looking forward to the Jungle camp we previously booked. Sandakan itself unfortunately didn't do much for us - I'd describe it as a bit of a slum town to be honest containing oppressive gloomy flats and dark side-streets - certainly not the place to go for a wander late at night. We tried to find somewhere half decent to eat but ... read more

Date visited: 23-25th April After the Orangutans at Sepilok we met our driver in the minibus at the carpark. After a short drive we met other travellers at the headquarters' where we had our free lunch and got chatting to other backpackers. We drove for 90 mins in minibuses to the river before boarding our longboat which roared down the river for about an hour or so. I couldn't believe how quiet this river was - known very well, in Borneo if not throughout the world for its nature and wildlife, I was expecting more tour boats and day trippers. There was just us! We arrived at the camp - all we could see was jungle. After balancing our heavy backpacks on our backs in the hot humid heat we proceeded through the jungle for about ... read more
