Uncle Tan Wildlife Camp and the cheeky monkeys

I woke up quite early that day, as we were in bed by 10pm the night before, and after breakfast we got everything ready to take to our 3 days wildlife camp. Before departing on our wildlife adventure, lunch was included at Uncle Tan's base camp, which was absolutely delicious. If this was going to be the kind of food we were going to have, I was very very pleased. Just before departing on our minibus started raining very heavily and we knew the boat had no roof, so we thought we were going to be for a very wet ride! When we got to the jetty they started giving us some bin liners to cover our bags so that they wouldn't get wet on the way to the camp. It rained most of the way but when it stoped a little, our boatman, Tony, showed us some of the wildlife found here, like cocodriles, macaques, etc. When we arrived to the camp jetty they had rubber boots for us to wear as the 400m separating the jetty from our "luxurious 5 star hotel chalets" was very very muddy due to the rain. We got assigned our chalets (a raised wooden hut with 3 thin bed matressess on the floor, and a mosquito net, so very basic one). I shared with Sandra, a very ice german girl, who was also in Cameron Highlands when I was there but never meet her. She knew thought the boys, Rob, Jack, Jake and Adam, what a coincidence, but not that much when you travelling, as I've discovered. We had a briefing on all the activities we were going to have in the next day and a half, and also advised us about the monkeys that come to the camp at night and take whatever they want, so they told us to make sure we closed our doors properly. They also told us that we could not swim on the river or lake due to the cocodriles! We had another delicious buffet meal before our first safari, a night boat ride. Tony our boatman was really good, and still don't know how he saw some of the animals he saw. We saw some prosbocis monkeys (the ones with a big flat nose), cocodriles (well, just the red eyes though), owls, kingfishers, stilts, eagles, piton snake, hornbills, etc. It was amazing.
The following day we had very early wake up call with the cheeky monkeys runing around the camp and trying to get into our room, so making lots of noise. I didn't have much sleep that night. At 6.30 we were all ready for our 2nd safari, another boat ride with Tony. He was so good, anything we asked him to find (of course, only things that we knew we could see there), he would find it for us in seconds. We saw more macaques, prosbocis monkeys, eagles, stilts, etc, and then we saw a very traggic thing, a dead elephant by the rive,r probably killed the the farmers around just because he went through their plantation. How cruel is that? he was just a baby.
Then back to camp for a delicious breakfast, with pancakes, banana fritters, fruit, toasts, everything. The next safari was a walk around the jungle to find what most of us came here to see, an orangutan in the wild. After walking for 20 min through the mud and the trees (some of them with leeches - I didn't get any), I spotted something very high on the trees, so I stopped to try to identify it, when I saw it moving and saw that it could be an orangutan. I called our guide and showed it to him, and he confirmed it, it was an orangutan! We stayed there for a while waiting to see if he/she would come down so that we could get a closer look, but no luck, so we continue our search for more wildlife. We were all very happy to have finally seen an orangutan on the wild, even if it was from far away. On the way back to the camp we were so lucky and saw it again, but this time lower on the trees so we had a chance for a better photos (instead of just a dark dot up on the trees). Then back to camp for another delicious buffet lunch a a little siesta as the next safari was not until 5pm, and we had been up since very early. It was another boat safari where we saw more or less the same things we have been seeing already. After another rest and dinner it was time for the night walk, but I decided to give it a miss as I don't really like insects that much, neither scorpions.
That night the monkeys running around our roofs, making lots of noise, and even fighting amongs them didn't allowed us to sleep much. After breakfast it was time to get back to the base camp , so we took the boat with Tony again, who spotted a couple more of cocodriles before getting to the jetty to take our minivans back. We had lunch there and then said bye bye to Ben and Dave who were heading to Kota Kinabalu, and the other people from our tour, except Sandra, who was also staying an extra night here.


Me desperte bien temprano ese dia, ya que el dia anterior me habia ido a la cama antes de las 10, asi que despues de desayunar preparamos todas nuestras cosas para irnos 3 dias de campamento con Uncle Tan. Antes de partir nos dieron de comer en el campamento base, que fue absolutamente delicioso. Si la comida en el campamento iba a ser asi, no me iba a poder quejar para nada! Justo antes de partir empezo a caer una lluvia intensa y sabiamos que nuestro barco no tenia techo, asi que pensamos que ibamos a tener un camino bastante mojado! Cuando llegamos al muelle nos repartieron unas cuantas bolsas de plastico para que pudieramos meter nuestras mochilas, para que no se mojaran por el camino. Nos llovio casi todo el camino pero cuando paro un poco, nuestro capitan, Tony, nos mostro parte de la fauna que podemos encontrar en esta zona, como cocodrilos, monos, etc. Cuando llegamos al muelle del campamento nos dieron botas de agua, ya que los 400m que nos separaban de nuestros "lujoso campamento" estaba lleno de barro por la lluvia. Nos assignaron nuestros chalets (un estilo de casita de madera elevada del suelo - por las lluvias - con 3 colchones en el suelo y sus mosquiteras, o sea, bien basico). Yo comparti con Sandra, una chica alemana muy maja, que casualidades de la vida habia estado en el mismo hostel en Cameron Highlands a la vez que yo, pero nunca la llegue a conocer. Ella incluso conocio a los chicos, Rob, Jack, Jake y Adam, con los que yo habia viajado a partir de ahi. Tuvimos un pequeno meeting para informarnos de todas las actividades de los siguientes dias, y tambien nos advirtieron de los monos que vienen por el campamento por la noche y se llevan todo lo que pueden, asi que nos dijeron de asegurarnos que cerrabamos bien las puertas cada vez que entraramos o salieramos de nuestras cabanas. Tambien nos dijeron que no nos podiamos banar ni el el rio ni en el lago ya que hay cocodrilos! Despues de otra deliciosa cena tuvimos nuestro primer safari, un paseo nocturno en barco. Tony nuestro capitan fue increible, y todavia no se como pudo ver algunos de los animales que encontro para que nosotros vieramos en esa oscuridad. Vimos monos prosbocis (muy feos con la nariz chata), cocodrilos (bueno, mas bien los ojos que sobresalian del agua), buhos, aguilas, una serpiente piton, etc. Fue una experiencia increible.
A la manana siguiente me desperte bien temprano ya que los monos que habia cerca estaban corriendo alrededor del campamento e intentado entrar en nuestra cabana, asi que estaban haciendo bastante ruido, asi que no dormi mucho esa noche. A las 6.30 ya estabamos todos listos para nuestro segundo safari, otro paseo en barco con Tony. Tony fue increible, cualquier animal que le pediamos encontrar (claro esta que solo los que sabiamos que podiamos encontrar aqui), el los encontraba para nosotros en segundos. Vimos macacos, mas monos prosbocis, aguilas, etc cuando de repente tambien vimos una cosa muy tragica, un bebe de elefante muerto en la orilla del rio, probablemente disparado por los granjeros de alrededor, y solo porque el pobrecito animal les paso por encima de la plantacion. Que cruel es esto no? El solo es un bebe!! De vuelta al campamento nos esperaba un delicioso desayuno con pancakes, tostadas, bananas fritas, fruta, cereales, etc. El siguiente safari fue una caminata en la jungra alrededor del campamento para encontrar lo que muchos habiamos venido aqui a ver...un orangutan en su habitat natural. Despues de andar unos 20 min entre el barro y los arboles (algunos de ellos con sanguijuelas - tranquilos no se me pego ninguna! que asco), en lo mas alto de un arbol vi algo, asi que me pare a intentar identificarlo, cuando de repente vi que se movio y que podia ser un orangutan. Llame a nuestro guia y se lo ensene, y el confirmo que era un orangutan!!!! Nos quedamos alli un rato a ver si el o ella bajaba un poco del arbol y asi poder observarlo mejor, ya que de momento solo era un punto oscuro entre los arboles, pero no hubo suerte, asi que continuamos en nuestra busqueda de mas vida salvaje. Todos estabamos muy felices de al fin haber visto a un orangutan en la naturaleza, aunque hubiera sigo de tan lejos. De camino de vuelta al campamente tuvimos mucha suerte y volvimos a ver al orangutan, pero esta vez mas abajo con lo cual pudimos verlo mejor y sacar mejores fotos (en vez de un punto oscuro en un arbol). De vuelta al campamento nos cocinaron otra deliciosa comida, y algunos nos acostamos un rato a hacer la siesta ya que el siguiente safari no era hasta las 5 de la tarde, y nos habiamos levantado bien temprano. Fue otro paseo en barco donde vimos mas o menos lo mismo que ya hbiamos visto en los anteriores safaris. Despues de la cena fue la hora del paseo nocturno, pero yo decidi no ir, ya que realmente no me gustan mucho las aranas, los escorpiones, etc y todas esas pequenas criaturas que salen en la noche.
Esa noche los monos no pararon de andar y jugar en nuestro tejado, haciendo asi un monton de ruido, asi que otra vez no pude dormir mucho. Despues del desayuno era la hora de volver al campamento base, asi que Tony nos llevo en barca de nuevo, viendo asi mas cocodrilos, aguilas, etc
Despues de la comida me despedi de Ben y Dave que se fueron hacia Kota Kinabalu, y de los demas en el tour, excepto Sandra que tambien se iba a quedar una extra noche en el campamento.
