Saturday, May 30th We got up early for our morning river cruise. At 06:00 we started up the river, Rusty at the helm, his keen eyes scanning the river bank and jungle for animals and birds. First we saw an Orangutan nest, then a troop of Long-Tailed Macaque, also Proboscis Monkeys, Kingfishers, a Purple heron, a Brahminy Kite, two Monitor Lizards, two Crocodiles, a Pied Hornbill, a few Black-and-Red Broadbills and a couple of Great Egret. Back at camp we had breakfast, then relaxed for a bit. Talita spotted a huge monitor lizard and we attempted to follow it. Later, while Talita took a nap, Ferdi followed the lizard, found it and managed to get a photo before it disappeared into the river. We had neglected to bring our chargers for the cameras and both were ... read more

Thursday, May 28th We woke still feeling unbelievably stiff. Our legs got the work-out of a lifetime the last few days. After breakfast we had a few "admin" things to take care of, such as booking and researching a few upcoming trips, blogging, and backing up photos to DVD. We also phoned the bus company to hear if our camera had turned up. It hadn't yet. We just hope somebody who really need it has it now. We're still a little sad about the loss though. Getting our photos backed up to DVD was near impossible in this town. None of the Internet cafes we could find had DVD writers and the photo shops insisted on doing it themselves, driving Ferdi to near insanity, having to stand there and watch them fumbling their way through what ... read more

We met our new friend Laura at a guesthouse in KK (Kota Kinabalu) the capital of Sabah state in Malaysian Borneo. Laura motivated us to see as much of Borneo as time would allow. After spending a couple days lurking in KK we set off to the Kinabatangan River for a three day two night stay in the jungle to look for wildlife. We sped off on a bus up the twisty mountain road past impressive Mt. Kinabalu with jungle valleys spotted with villages and mountain farm plots on steep terraces. Very impressive country. A bit of a mixup at our pick up point as our guest house didn't bother to book us in for the package despite the fact we had already paid a steep deposit. Anyways the helpful staff of the Kinabatangan Nature Lodge ... read more

Day 285: Friday 10th April - Arriving on the Kinabatangan River It is good to be able to have a lazy morning ahead of my trip to the Kinabatangan River. I am not getting picked up until noon so I can laze around in my bed watching a daft, slushy rom-com on TV and get a late breakfast. It takes 3 hours to reach the Kinabatangan River, at 560km long, the longest river in Sabah. It is also estimated to have the largest collection of wildlife in all of Malaysia. 8 species of hornbills have been spotted here along with numerous other birds such as the kingfisher and the snakebird. The Kinabatangan is also one of only two places on earth where 10 primate species can be found. These include, the Orang-Utan, the Bornean Gibbon, the ... read more

Once upon a time only David Attenborough types could visit the rainforests of Borneo - but now with Air Asia everyone can fly... there. (on a side note I really like Air Asia and despite their reputation have never had a late flight yet - we are on to our third now). We were chuffed upon arriving in Kota Kinabalu - the capital of the semi-automonous Malaysian state on the island of Borneo - to be met at the airport by my great uncle Des. Uncle Des moved out to Malaysia and Brunei 26 years ago and has lived here ever since. On landing at Kota Kinabalu or KK as its better known we were immediately more comfortable in the heat here. We are talking 28-32 C which is more pleasant but the hummidity is ... read more

After spending a few days in Sandakan (at the homey Winho Lodge) trying to wait out the floods at Uncle Tan's Wildlife Camp, we finally decided that it was time to get a move on and instead booked our Kinabatagan River safari through the Bilit Safari camp. Turns out this place was flooded too (I guess the week before we arrived in Borneo they had experienced some torrential downpours, and while we were lucky enough to arrive afterwards, we still came across some of the flooding aftermath), however, they had an alternate plan in place. We were picked up by some random dude in his Toyota Corolla about 45 minutes before we had arranged-which sent us into a frantic packing frenzy-and transported two and a half hours south to the Kinabatagan River. The river is "the" ... read more

Someone stole my new flip flops. They'd only cost me eight quid yet I was a bit irrational about it and couldn't hear mention of their disappearance for about the next three hours. I think it was because I'd gotten comfortable not having to worry about things like petty theft happening in Kuching and I suppose I was surprised someone had actually stolen something here. They went from the stairway of the Singgahsana Lodge where it's polite that everybody remove their footwear before going into reception. I've no suspicion that it could have been any of the staff at the Singhahsana, recently an Australian girl told me and Lynn that in many parts of Asia its not the locals you need to watch out for, its other travelers. I think she's right. Are thieves going ... read more

Tuesday 17th February 09: Today we headed over to the hostel to wait for the transfer to Sukau for the jungle river cruise and trek. The camp we were supposed to be staying in (in Bilit) had flooded so we were transferred to Sukau instead. We had a quick spot of lunch at a cafe round the corner and tried the Nasi Goreng Kinabalu seeing as it was named after the mountain we'd been to see - fried rice with chicken - nice. It took us 2 hours from Sandakan to Sukau and the bus driver explained the process of making palm oil to us as we passed through all the palm oil plantations. Our first river cruise was at 4pm and we got into a little wooden boat and motored quietly down the river. We ... read more

We got back to the hostel ready for our trip into the jungle to be greeted with the news that because of the bad weather the bridge on the main road had collapsed so we wouldn’t be able to go until the next day! So, the weather was gorgeous so we took ourselves to a posh hotel to use their pool for the day, £5 total bargain!! We had lunch there and then fell asleep on the loungers, when we woke up we asked one of the staff what time it was and he said 6.30 so we figured we better go. As we walked down the hill back to the hostel I couldn’t believe how hot and sunny it was for 6.30, anyway, we went to hsbc (they are everywhere!!) got some money out and ... read more
