Taxi to bus terminal – bus to Kota Kinabatangan – minibus to jungle – DONE! It was as easy as it sounds. At the guesthouse in Kota Kinabalu we booked and paid for two nights at the nature lodge where we would embark on a number of jungle/river tours and be fed. The only thing we had to organise was the bus to Kinabatangan and this was simple from the bus terminal. There were many to choose from and the costs vary depending on the comfort you desire. The drive was long but stunning. We passed through the Kruger mountain range and were treated to breathtaking views of the beast of Borneo – Mount Kinabalu. Obviously, having already paid we were a little worried that we would arrive in Kota Kinabatangan and be left stranded after ... read more

An educated individual such as yourself need only close your eyes to bring to mind any number of old movies or classic literary tales set in Colonial British Malaya. Surely you can recite those Noel Coward and Somerset Maugham classics, set in crumbling Georgetown, on Penang Island? For Frances and me however, our grasp of old movies and classic British literature is not sufficient to have bedded down a preconceived understanding of “Penang”. Instead, we seem at times to feel quite underprepared and poorly informed as we move from place to place. Even before we arrive in Penang (let’s be clear, the City is actually Georgetown, but Penang will suffice, as it really does ooze more charisma) there is this disconcerting absence of clarity in the vision of what to expect. Sure, we read the guidebook ... read more

We were off to Sukau, our rainforest adventure and our base for 3 nights would be the Sukau Greenview B&B located on the banks of the Kinabatangan River, which is Sabah’s longest river, measuring in at 560km. The area is Malaysia’s largest forested flood plain and has oxbow lakes, mangrove swamps and grass swamps. Although Kinabatangan was designated a wildlife sanctuary in 1999 villages and agricultural development merge with the protected areas, but despite this there was apparently a host of wildlife to see along its banks. Once again the tours we looked into for going up river and jungle trekking seemed really expensive, but by booking the B&B we could please ourselves which river boat tours we took and how many over the three days. The B&B was good enough, with an adequate bedroom and ... read more

Plan for Kinabatagan: 4x River Cruises 2x Night Walk 1x Jungle Trekking The Camp was very nice, in the middle of nowhere. The River Cruises arer very nice. You can see a lot of animals in the real Nature. I have seen a very big Urang-Utan, Crocodiles and lot's of Birds. I like the King Fisher Birds, but it's not so easy to take a picture. On the second Day my Canadian Friends leave the Camp for Diving on the southeast Islands. Yes, that's it. Looking forward for the Mulu Nationalpark.... read more

My short vacation to KK had recharged my batteries, so I was ready to get stuck back into the project on our return to the village. And I didn't have to wait long... the next day we all packed our bags and headed off back to Supu for a three night camping trip, to cut new trails and mark and map those already cut by us on our previous visit. This time, however, the numbers made it a full-blown expedition... Rosli, Albert, Nosali and Din from MESCOT, plus all eight volunteers. It goes without saying that the boat was pretty full! Luckily, we had time to purchase a new tub of Cloud 9s before setting sail. We set up camp in the same place as before, albeit this time the scale had grown to accommodate the ... read more

The guide who was to drive us to Kinabatangan picked us up from our lodging house at around noon, it was another three hours drive from Sandakan to Kinabatangan River, the second longest river in Malaysia. We shared the car with an Irish couple who were also supposed to stay with Uncle Tan's and who are just as disappointed as we were. Oh well, we did share a different tour together just the same. The river was flooded indeed. There were fallen trees by the river bank and our guide have told us beforehand that the probability of sightings would be low since the water level is high. During our first 30 minutes, we only got to see several monitor lizards. I was very much more interested with seeing the proboscis monkeys because I've never actually ... read more

After seven months of travel, it was time to put down my backpack for a while and do some work. I've been interested in the plight of the world's rainforests for some time, and had been particularly enchanted by the island of Borneo. This trip was the ideal opportunity to explore this great natural resource, and the length of my trip encouraged me to spend a month as a volunteer somewhere on my route... so I chose Borneo. My placement is with a community organization called MESCOT, who operate from a small village called Batu Puteh, on the Kinabatangan River in Sabah, northeast Borneo. MESCOT comprises about 400 local people who turned from working on logging operations (both legal and illegal), cocoa and palm oil plantations to tourism and conservation projects. The organization is now providing ... read more

What day is it? Has it only been 2 weeks since I landed? Last time I managed to post one blog for the entire trip, and relied on Facebook to do the rest. But this time, I'm going to try and do this properly! So here's what I've been up to so far. I arrived safe and well into the intense heat that is Singapore around 8am local time, and got involved almost as soon as I checked into my hostel. After making friends with and being rescued by a girl in my dorm who had maps and a plan, we headed straight to Chinatown for Dim Sum and Pork Balls on Smith Street via a few temples on the way. In the evening we went out to the Night Safari, which is part of Singapore ... read more

Immer wieder wird man mit „very complicated“, ... read more

The Sungai Kinabatangan was yet another place we only learnt about on our travels.. we don't do much research until we arrive at a place so only get set on going somewhere if someone highly recommends it.. which is exactly what happened here. This is basically a natural reserve located alongside the Kinabatangan river where you have the opportunity to spot Orangtans, Pygmy Elephants, Probiscus Monkeys, Macaque Monkeys and a whole host of other birds and wildlife so we were keen to go and see if we could see anything ourselves. We'd been recommended the Sakuru Greenview B&B so after hitching the remaining 42km to Sakau from the main road because the minibuses were ridiculously expensive, we checked in and immediately booked ourselves on the afternoon sunset boat trip along the river. Our wildlife spotting started ... read more
