I am pretty new to this whole blog experience, but wanted a place that our family and friends could go to and see the plans for our upcoming trip (easier than sending off several e-mails to different people) IF they were interested. If not, they don't have to check this out at all. I am hoping once we are in Borneo we will have access to computers here and there and people can read about what we are doing. We FINALLY have our trip all planned. We will be leaving on April 18th at 4 in the afternoon for the 13 hour flight from Detroit to Tokyo. We then get back on a plane for Singapore, then another one for Kuala Lumpur and yet another one for our final (ish) destination of Sandakan, Sabah, Malaysian Borneo. ... read more

You can be completely motionless here and still sweat like a complete bastard :). Fried banana and chili for breakfast is sublime. Staying in the jungle is sweaty, slushy, squelchy and full of raucous noise. Orangutans are heartbreakingly gorgeous. Probiscus monkeys extraordinary. I feel no rascism - just one big world. There are 32 tribes, different races and every colour. The word Malaysia could almost translate to peaceful cultural fusion. Geckos sing to you. Bouncing butterflies are catching my eye. Delicate dragon fruit and sago with coconut is DIVINE.My home stay family where generously hospitable. I love eating with my hands. I love greeting people with my hand over my heart. Outdoor showering from a bucket, feet in the mud, pouring soft rainwater over my head while I stare deep into the ultra-green is delicious. Fireflies ... read more

So we'd arrived as MESCOT and Jim told us about the project and what we'd be doing for the next 2days, we also found out that there were elephants in the area very close to where we were supposed to be camping that night. And Jim though it would be a good idea if we did a night safari tonight rather than tomorrow as he thought we'd have a better chance of seeing the elephants, though that meant rearranging the plan and going to our home stay that night as we couldn't do this safari from the camp. Everyone agreed to this idea as it meant we might see the elephants and so we were shipped out in pairs to different families in the area. The families have all come to MESCOT to be a part ... read more

The package we'd chosen for a short stay in the Kinabatangan jungle started with a drive on a rough road through palm tree plantations. Unfortunately for Borneo's ecological diversity, logging of the jungle is taking place in both the Malaysian and Indonesian parts of the island, with revenue-earning palm trees being planted in its place. A short boat ride then took us to our "resort". Wild elephants had stumbled into the camp a few months ago, causing a fair amount of damage, so a 5,000 volt electric fence encircled it now - worth knowing if you're keen on moonlit midnight wanderings. We were able to upgrade to a cabin for our first night but had to slum it in a dorm for the second. In a darkly amusing incident, I joked with LA Woman that it ... read more

Gomantong Caves We were picked up by our guide Armran and endured a very bumpy ride to the Gomantong caves. These caves are famous for the swiftlet nests that are collected to make Birds Nest Soup. Crazy guys climb flimsy ladders suspended from the ceiling to harvest the birds nests, which are made from the swift's saliva, then even crazier Chinese soup lovers pay thousands of ringgit per kilo to make the delicacy. We feel sorry for the homeless birds! For those of you who watched the Planet Earth series, you may recognise the caves from a very squirmy episode. As we approached the entrance to the Black Cave, the acrid stench of guano filled our nostrils. We teetered around a boardwalk, suspended above a mountain of bird and bat poo, that was teeming with huge ... read more

Bilit-kylä sijaitsee about 130km päässä Sandakanista, joten matka kesti tovin. Alkumatka taittui mukavasti asfalttitietä, joka vaihtui sitten pölyiseksi hiekkatieksi. Perillä meille esiteltiin talo, jonka asukkaat olivat tarjonneet kotinsa meille majapaikaksi seuraavaksi pariksi yö... read more

I left Kota Kinabalu the day after I got off the mountain en route for Sandakan, then the next day I would head off to my next stop: Uncle Tan's Wildlife Camp. I thought I would get some much needed shut-eye on the bus, but then I remembered that I was in southeast asia and sleeping on buses doesn't really happen. Eyes widened as I entered the bus because I was the only foreigner. Of course, the cutest little baby was sitting behind me, and an hour into the 5 hour journey started to scream its head off. In addition I had Mel Gibson's new movie about South American tribes playing that made my stomach turn. Rather funny, I had never heard of this movie and missed the opening title, and mistakenly thought this was a ... read more

Ann Taylor. Master of fashion. Fabulous designer. Clothes. Bags. Sunglasses. My sunglasses. My ex-sunglasses. You know how sometimes you get attached to an article of clothing or a piece of jewelery that just "becomes you" or "makes you complete?" Well, at the risk of sounding shallow, materialistic, or snobbish, I had one of those such items. My Ann Taylor sunglasses. Silly, indeed, I know, but these shades fit me. They fit my face, they framed my face, they looked good, and best of all, they were ON SALE when I bought them. Ah, the things that make a girl happy! How Ann and I first met..... A few years ago I walked into an Ann Taylor Shop in my home town. Mind you, I am NOT a shopper and still have and wear clothes from my ... read more
