On my way from New Zealand to England I got the chance to have a five day sojourn in the conveniantly eqidistant Malaysia. Originally I had to contemplate myself sitting in a beach restaurant holding a pina colada or a mojito, the waves nearby gently lapping on the shore, the sun setting on the distant horizon and the opposite chair of my romantic table for two... EMPTY! Thank god my girlfriend Maria Chiara spared me that fate and decided to throw any concerns of expense or jetlag out the window, and she joined me! The is both of our first trips to Malaysia and it took in two islands on the west coast: Penang and Langkawi. They both lived up to their sterling reputations: Penang for being an ex-colonial melting pot of culture and Langkawi for ... read more

Hello!!! An 11 hour 'air con' bus journey later and we were in Penang Malaysia. We stayed on Love Lane in Georgetown which is the oldest part of Penang. We were staying at the Reggae Hostel in dorms for the first 2 nights they were so cool you get your own little pod with curtains so it is like a tiny room. They were really good because you get more privacy but it did make it harder to meet people because you never really see anyone. All of the staff in the hotel were so nice and helpful they gave us loads of advice. On our first day we went on a tour around Georgetown which just included a lot of historical building but we got bored after a few of the buildings and took a ... read more

Hello! We have made it to Malaysia! We had a great time in Thailand but got itchy feet and so spent 11 days there and we are going to spend 11 days here too. (unless we decide we want more than 1 night in Singapore, we might head there earlier than planned). We woke up at 6 on Sunday morning and caught a taxi to the bus station, where we got the bus to the pier, onto the boat to Surat Thani on the mainland, then 2 minibuses down through the border and into Malaysia. We arrived in Georgetown at 9 pm, so spent 14 hours on the move (Malaysia is 1 hour ahead of Thailand so we are now 8 hours ahead!). Gerogetown is in Penang and is off the mainland so to get to ... read more

Penang is an island on the north west coast of malaysia, this was our last stop in malaysia before heading into thailand. We stayed in george town, the main city on the island, most people come and rent motos to see the island but we just stayed in the city. The night life here wasn’t great to be honest but the food was amazing, especially a 24 hour curry house with dirt cheap roti for 25p. Hatiq, a guy working in our hostel, took us out two nights claiming he knew the good spots and could get us in places for free but in the end we ditched him, a bit mean but he was a buzz kill/tool.... read more

It was a short five minute walk from Butterworth train station to the ferry and a quick ride across to the island of Penang where I jumped off and made my way to "Love Lane" - the hub of budget backpacker accommodation in Georgetown. Lonely Planet advocates taking the bus but this is surely for the only truly lazy traveller... ten minutes walking and I was there and checking into Reggae Guest House which had been recommended to me by a fella in KL. It was a nice sociable place with free internet and breakfast and a pool table downstairs and I stayed there 5 nights. Georgetown was a very comfortable place to stay for a while. It was easily navigable on foot and it was hard not to find something to like. Above all, the ... read more

Boxes Boxes is what you pack bikes in before you put them on a plane. If the box is not big, packing a bike in a box is a b*tch! Our boxes were not big. Mr Suraj, our shifty shipping agent, had made our boxes almost too small to squeeze our bikes in. Handlebars - off, front wheels - off, clutch cables - off, screen - off, instruments - off, brake callipers - off, mudguards - off. Although, if packing was not much fun, unpacking and putting the bikes back together was decidedly un-fun. A situation made significantly worse by my ‘sensible’ decision that since the front wheel was off already, it would also be a good time to change my front tyre. It was not a good time to change my front tyre. Firstly, I ... read more

The island of Penang is just off the west coast of Malaysia, although it’s an island it can be reached by the one of the longest bridges in Asia. At 13.5 kilometres it spans the Straits of Melaka. We arrived here after a 4-hour bus journey; a lot of the time was taken up by queuing up at immigration on the border between Thailand and Malaysia. Our mini bus, for once, was not overloaded. We, well Stan mostly, spent most of the 4 hours chatting to a Canadian fellow traveller; he was a frequent visitor to Penang and knew of a clean cheap safe guesthouse. He’d reserved a room but luckily for us they had another vacant room so we were sorted without having to tramp around. It’s always good to follow someone’s recommendation. Looking ... read more

Malaysia 21/02/12 Penang We booked a minivan to take us all the way from Krabi to Penang in Malaysia via Hat Yai. It worked out cheaper then catching taxis to the local bus stations and getting the buses there. The two mini vans were not as cramped as we have been used to and the driving not as crazy so it was quite pleasant. We arrived in Penang which is a large island North East of Malaysia late in the afternoon. The island is connected by a very long bridge and we were dropped off in Georgetown. We found a cheap room at the banana hostel. There are around 5 banana hostels in Georgetown, all the same price rooms so we just picked the nicest one. Private room with shared bathroom, RM25, £5. Panang is famous ... read more
