I can't wait to get to KL just to upload all of my recent photos off my camera... So, today, me and Tyler had a pretty uneventful day. First we both went in search of flip flops (thongs to him) which we found..then we walked the hawker stalls of Penang street, where we tried cendol. Its a popular malay sweet dish, made of coconut milk, a worm-like jelly, rice flour with green food colouring, shaved ice and grass jelly. After that we walked through little India and had various samosas and Indian food. It's was nice but we were stuffed! Tonight we went to the hawker food court for tea. I tried Curry mee, which is a dish that is unique to malaysia made up of thin yellow egg noodles and thin rice vermicelli with spicy ... read more

After checking back into Ryokan yesterday and meeting a new roomie, Tyler, from Sydney, I went out in searh of the 1st avenue mall just to buy a sponge! Their convenience stores here seem to stock everything but the one thing I needed. anyway, I found the mall, and got the sponge! One the way back I passed a street bakery, outisde therer were tray upon tray of dough, sat out in the sunlight. according to the 'Baker' she is waiting for the bread rolls to be ready. Who'd have thougt it, baking bread in, not an oven, but the sun?! Last night me, Tyler and this Canadian girl (can't for the life of me remember her name)went for tea at the hawker centre. We then had a wander around the rest of Georgetowns hawker stalls ... read more

After a 3hr ferry ride from Langkawi i arrived in georgetown. I checked into Ryokan hostel which is great but due to the marathon being held at the old bridge for the last time everywhere is fully booked. So tomorrow morning i leave here and check into Guest inn, muntri street for 1nt (£11) the ONLY place i could get a room for the nt and then i have 2 more nights back at Ryokan. Georgetown is located on the north-east tip of the island is the capital of Penang & is the oldest town/city in the country. Since its listing as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007, apparantly the city has experienced a revival, as renewed interests in its historical sites brought heritage conservation, breathing new life into old buildings and the city streets. ... read more

The journey to George Town was pretty effortless, 5 hours on an air conditioned coach and dropped right in the middle of the city. Travellers really are well served by the various transport networks over here. The hotel we had booked, 1926 Heritage Hotel, is spot on. Just outside of the mayhem of the very centre, nice big room with balcony overlooking the swimming pool (which is needed given the afternoon temperatures in the mid 30's). We've spent the last couple of days mooching round the city, which is designated a World Heritage Site. Lots of evidence of its history and ethnicity. As with other places we visited plenty to see related to its colonial past and to the impact of the Chinese and Indian immigrants, which have been central to the city's evolution. Yesterday was ... read more

Remembering to take with me an abundance of warm clothes I had a successful sleep on the night bus from Kota Bahru to Penang. Like many of the busses in Malaysia it operated a team of staff that was three fold; 1st the driver, 2nd the person to sell you a ticket and 3rdthe person to rip your ticket. The system works well if maybe a little over staffed but then I’ve heard on the grapevine that unemployment in Malaysia is a mere 3% The great this about night buses is that they provide you with a place to sleep, the bad thing is that often this place to sleep will get to your stop at 4:30 in the morning. But this was fine as it meant the temperature was still cool and I could ... read more

I'm laying on the concrete at the bus station, watching the clouds roll over the hills. My Malaysian friend, Roy, is on his way to pick us up. It's warm but the breeze keeps the heat at bay. Back in the tropics, the trees look greener, the flowers more vibrant. I see a "Welcome to Penang" sign. Alright, now bring on the food! I was told in Penang you must eat eat eat! So away I chomped! Indian, Chinese, and Malay cuisines all melt together on this island of fusion. The spice combinations will leave your taste buds bewildered and tantalized. If you're feeling adventurous go for the century-old eggs, and the baby octopi. Malay people are very proud of their eclectic food choices and rave about how no where in the world cooks like them. ... read more

All mat här i Georgetown är fantastisk. Vi ... read more
