Next stop, Georgetown in the island state of Penang. a place that I have to say I'm not exactly new to. Not one bit. You see, this is my parents' hometown, and my grandma along with other members of my extended family live here, so suffice to say I've been here the odd occasion or so i.e. almost every year since I was a kid! But as far as I remember, this was the first time I'd arrived alone at the bus terminal, and made my way to my grandma's house alone. In the past I'd either arrive with my family, or an enthusiastic uncle/ auntie/ cousin would be waiting to pick me up at the airport. This time, I'd intentionally arrived unannounced, just to see what it would be like, as if I were arriving ... read more

A few hours after alighting from the ferry, the ringing in our ears stopped. Hearing was restored and we were able to enjoy a meal at the hawker market nearby. Walking past Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion, we reminisced about our stay there in 2010, remembering that it is the second best place we have ever stayed at in our lives (Buninyong's Miners Church still holds top spot). Not that where we are staying now is awful, but it doesn't have quite the same atmosphere. What is does have, however, is a pool. We also overlook the Eastern & Oriental Hotel, where the O'Briens enjoyed some glorious holiday moments, also in 2010. Our humble room may lack the grandeur of the E & O, the historical beauty of the Blue Mansion, but the Filipino Trio singing the ... read more

Yesterday/today was the best birthday EVER!!! It started out with a night out in Ipoh, which I might add is a Ghost town. Then, the next morning I enjoyed a comfortable bus ride to Penang. I was a little bummed we were not going to take a ferry over but taking the bridge was still beautiful. Penang for anyone who doesn't know is an Island off the west coast of Malaysia and it is just beautiful. The weather was nice all day and after arriving we ate Thai food. It was delicious. On the way back to the hostel Kate, who has the same birthday as me, noticed a massage parlor that didn't look creepy (most were sketchy looking). We checked the prices and debated doing it but decided to get one hour massages. It was ... read more

Since the world did not come to an end on December 21st, it was time for us to get serious again and shift back into active sightseeing mode, making sure we took advantage of the rich culture around us. This is when we left the lovely Tanjung Bungah and moved to more spartan digs in the centre of Georgetown, Penang’s capital city. Though the apartment we moved into was clean and had a fabulous view over the historical “heritage” district, it was considerably plainer than the previous one and located in yet another soulless high-rise. This building, situated above the enormous “Time Square” shopping centre, was simply too massive and lacked any kind of charm or appeal. While it was great to have our own kitchen and living room, not to mention TWO bedrooms… plus a ... read more

Well, I've finally lost my 'Puncture Virginity' this morning on my way down here to Georgetown, Panang Island, Malaysia. The 2 previous 'blow outs' don't count. New years eve here is hotting up properly. Pulsing muzac, and fireworks to start shortly. This is apparently a "World Heritage Site' Something to do with colonial history, East India company, chinese immigration in late 19th century and all the buildings that go therewith. Pretty place but more like Hong Kong skyline with old buildings buried somewhere in the cityscape. Will roost here a couple of days before moving south to Kuala Lumpur. Happy New Year to 1 ( or 2) and all. Nick/Cyclopath... read more

A long held ambition has finally been fulfilled. It has been something I have been thinking about for years, but somehow I never managed to actually get down to it. There was always something that got in the way of me and my fishy business. Money more often than not, or lack of water, a key ingredient when one talks about our watery friends. Ever tried to do a diving course in Central Asia? It is easy, you don’t need to wear any air tanks, you can walk on the bottom of the Aral Sea without the need of any protective gear. Of course, you won’t see much in the way of fish, except maybe a dried out example or two. But I am not in Central Asia anymore and so the time has come where ... read more

I am ferried into a cab with a Swedish couple coming to the end of their travels. I have no idea what's going on (fairly standard for me) but I had thought i'd bought a bus ticket to travel across the border from Siem Reap down to Bangkok. “Oh no I think it was overbooked that's why we are in a cab” I'm always the last to know! We get over the border and I realise its the first time i haven't looked up the visa requirements in advance. Big. Mistake. After an interminable wait at customs we shuffle through and I look at my stamp. Turns out you don't even get a month coming in overland to Thailand and my passport has only been stamped for 15 days. I have a big New Year's eve ... read more
