Yesterday/today was the best birthday EVER!!! It started out with a night out in Ipoh, which I might add is a Ghost town. Then, the next morning I enjoyed a comfortable bus ride to Penang. I was a little bummed we were not going to take a ferry over but taking the bridge was still beautiful. Penang for anyone who doesn't know is an Island off the west coast of Malaysia and it is just beautiful. The weather was nice all day and after arriving we ate Thai food. It was delicious. On the way back to the hostel Kate, who has the same birthday as me, noticed a massage parlor that didn't look creepy (most were sketchy looking). We checked the prices and debated doing it but decided to get one hour massages. It was ... read more

I appologize for the start of this but I'm feeling a bit philisophical. What is important to people can define how they live their lives. It is easy to say people value money. From what I have observed, people only value money as a means to an end. Furthermore, those who value money for itself, rarely get any. At home the US Government has, since the beginning, provided its people with an ideal about what is important. A good American seeks the "American Dream," a nice cared for home, no need to want for food and clothes, a good job and a safe place to raise a family. Since the inception of this dream things have shifted to allow for other wants, but the underlying needs have remained. In Malaysia, I have yet to see any ... read more

Today we arrived in Malaka. I haven't had any time to look around yet, but I can already tell there is a difference. I think I might miss Singapore a bit. Don't get me wrong, I am very excited to get to explore Malaysia. I just was starting to feel confident in Singapore. I knew how to get around and i knew where to eat. I think I am also going to miss the bathrooms. When I was packing for the trip I read over the items we were instructed to bring and I started to get nervose. I wondered how bad the bathrooms would be that I'd need to carry my own toilet paper and hand sanitizer. I wondered how dirty and mucky it would be that I'd need tons of pills and medicaiton for ... read more

I haven't written in a while; I am sorry. It's been hard keeping up with everything that has been happening the last few days. There have been tours, and tons of free time to explore. Some of my favorite times have been visiting the park, eating dinner in Little India and most recently EVERYTHING surrounding New Years. First I'll talk about the other night. It was after we went on our first tour. We ended the day at a delicious buffet where I ate all sorts of Japanese food. I know I know, I'm not in Japan still it was delicious (and a group dinner so payed for). After everyone was done eating some people decided to go straight back and others wanted to shop. I joined a group that just wanted to wander around some ... read more

Yesterday was the first day we got to walk around. I was really excited to be able to look around on our own. We started off getting some complimentary breakfast at the bottom of the Hostel in what I assume was a resturant at night. The breakfast was awsome. Juice, coffee, eggs, fruit, toast, some weird pasta thing. Then we left and walked down a hill through Emily park which is super pretty. I can't get past how nice the weather here is. I love wearing shorts!!! no one knew where we were going and no one cared. I think we just walked untill we saw a large group of people, and following them we ended up in Little India. It looked like a lot of fun with a lot of shops and stalls but everyone ... read more

So, this is my first attempt at doing anything like this and I expect there to be problems. For example, spelling and gramer issues, run-on sentences and definitly made up words. Essentially, if you are an English major don't bother reading this or you will go crazy. The best place to start is the begining and for me that meant DC. I wasn't feeling very well and was convinced that I was going to be sick and not allowed to fly. However, I managed to fake well and get through security (the longest line of my life up to that point). After a short wait I boarded my first flight which went to Seattle. Just before I left it started to snow...haha I got out just in time. The flight lasted 5 hours but it felt ... read more
