Penang There were a few reasons why I have come back to Penang for the fourth time. Most importantly to get a 60 day visa for Indonesia (visa info below), the food, a few sites I haven't seen, and it is on the way to Langkawi where I will catch up with my good friend Sheikh. And I forgot to mention, I really like the place. First thing I did was to head to the Indonesian consulate at 10am to hand over the required documents, which were: Passport, proof of inbound and outbound flights, photocopy of main page and Malaysian entry stamp page of passport, one photo with a red background, and RM170. It only took me about 30 minutes the first day to get and fill out the visa form, hand it in, and after ... read more

Penang is an island off of Malaysia, in the Melacca Straits, the narrow, strategic passage where all the shipping has always moved between Asia and India / the Middle East / Europe. I’ve been visiting the city of Georgetown, or George Town, which is the main city on the island and one of the larger cities in Malaysia. Georgetown is a fascinating mix of Chinese, Malay, and Indian culture. Its culture feels much like the diversity I described in the blog on Kuala Lumpur, a few weeks ago. Georgetown’s history is similar to the history of Melacca, which May, Jordan, Ella and I visited last year. May and I wrote a blog about Melacca last year. Much of what we wrote there applies to Georgetown as well. Actually, Patsy the Purple Cow’s (Ella’s) blog on Melacca ... read more

Hello,, Me and Joel went to Ko Phi Phi Leh, which is the smaller of the 2 island's. We paid about 5 quid for a day trip on a longtail boat with snorkling aswell. The weather was a bit iffy as it was windy and the boat was tipping hardcore from side to side, so if you don't like huge huge waves this was not the boat for you. The long tail boats are basically long rowing boats with an outboard motor on the back, so it was pretty hairy at times. People in the boat had lifejackets on and were clinging to the sides. First we went to Monkey beach and there were loads of monkeys, suprisingly, we took lots of pics and a few people who got to close got attacked by them, haha, ... read more

As I write this, we’re on a train to Thailand. It should take about 9 hours to reach Surat Thani, a city in the South which is the gateway to all the islands on the east coast. We’re going to Ko Samui, but as our train arrives too late to make the ferry crossing tonight, we have a hotel booked for the night so we can do it in the morning instead. Also, we are sitting next to real monks! WOW. We spent another day and morning in Penang and spent quite a lot of time just relaxing and taking lots of naps. On Friday night, we found this great food court and ordered an Indian which was mouth-wateringly yummy. It was the only place we could find which sold beef strangely enough and after finding ... read more

We’ve now left Kuala Lumpur and arrived in Penang, which is an island off the west coast of Malaysia. It was inhabited by the British and has a lot of historical sites. It’s actually a “unesco world heritage city” whatever that means! Before we left Kuala Lumpur, we ended up buying our fair share of fake items (love my D&G sunglasses) and discovered two amazing foods. Firstly, the best chicken satay skewers EVER from a stall in Chinatown and secondly these Malaysian crisps which are “ninja hot plate” flavour. Me and Terry just call them “Ninja Crisps”. We had a bit of trouble finding somewhere decent for lunch on our last morning in KL so decided we’d go for the safe option of KFC. Unfortunately, KFC isn’t safe at all. They obviously don’t serve bacon (due ... read more

We entered Malaysia after a long day traveling through the south of Thailand. We could tell immediately that we were in a different country, it feels more developed with it's complex road systems and newer modernised buildings. Our first stop was the small western island of Penang where we spent a few days in it's main city of Georgetown. A kaleidoscope of cultures fuse together in Georgetown to create this diverse little place; a mixture of Malay, Indian and Chinese communities roll into one. Taking a walk through the streets of Georgetown feels like you are passing through 3 different countries. One moment you will be wandering past the peaceful, incense lined paths of Chinatown when suddenly you turn into the next street to be bombarded with bollywood beats being blared out of huge speakers and ... read more

When writing our last blog we have left KL and started backpacking. The backpacking has changed a lot since the last time I was in Asia (about 6 years ago). Nowadays every hostel has a wi-fi and almost every backpacker has a smartphone or/and a laptop with them (us included). Its a funny sight, walking in to the dorm room and seeing everybody on their smartphones, people texting and using apps to call home for free. In a way it defeats the point of traveling as you spend so much time tapping on your keyboard, when we should all be meeting new people. Which is what it is all about. I am trying to behave, trying. But I use writing of this blog as an excuse to fire my netbook up. We still met a lot ... read more

The harbor of Port Klang serves as the entry for Kuala Lumpur. We have been in KL many times on previous cruises, so upon the recommendation of friends, Hilda and Jarmo, we decided to visit the newly built capitol city of Putrajaya. While Kuala Lumpur is the financial capitol of the country, the governmental functions are being transferred to the new city designed just for that purpose. Not everyone is sold on the idea like some of the princes and the powerful Sultan who prefer to live elsewhere. But Putrajaya is a well planned city set in beautiful surroundings incorporating both traditional and modern architectural design--somewhat like Washington, D.C. We had a fairly empty bus as there were about 15 no-shows for the tour. Since most of the tours are complimentary, there are some passengers who ... read more

This morning was a relaxed start. I'd packed last night so all I had to throw in my bag were some toiletries my towel and my newly dried hand-washed clothes. I was begging to miss having machine-washed clothes, the only opportunity I'd had to wash stuff was at Dai's in Singapore and I'd now been through all these. I'd arranged for a 10.30am bus from KL because the journey only took six hours so I still got to Penang in time for dinner. Aruna, a girl who'd been in the same dorm as me, was also headed to Penang but she hadn't booked her ticket there. I told her to tag along as there were so many coach services there was bound to be a space. I had pre-warned her of my experience yesterday and sure ... read more

Three different people provided three different answers to the same question. Google wasn't solving the problem either. What I wanted was a bus from Kuala Lumpur to Georgetown in Penang. I had the names of three different bus stations and had just walked to a fourth one that was closed for renovation. Getting out of the city was proving to be more difficult then I would have thought. A variance in prices, schedules, bus routes and cabs to get to the bus stations around KL had my head spinning with numbers, timetables while I was unclear which bus station to choose. I did unleash a profanity chain at the internet cafe much to the displeasure of Richie. I had gotten a little frustrated by all this. What about a train? I checked the website. Cheaper and ... read more
