We spent our last days in Malaysia on the island of Penang. We spent time in both Georgetown and by the beach. In Georgetown we saw all the sights, mostly from the British Colonial era, but the Chinese temples were outstanding. The food here was fantastic. We ate most nights at this hawker stall area, and had the best noodles we've ever tasted for 2.70 Ringets (about 50p). We also went to this dim sum place where these little old ladies push carts of dim sum around and you point at what you want. We spent a couple of days at the beach. A 40 min bus ride took us from Georgetown to Batu Ferringhi. We didn't do much here except sunbathe and eat! Every morning around 5am a Mosque woke us with a very loud ... read more

We felt quite relieved to arrive in Malaysia after Thailand. It was surprisingly developed and we were instantly treated, the same as the locals instead of constantly referred to as falangs and charged double if not more for everything; this made us feel better. We had heard that it is the food that makes Georgetown what it is and they were right – there was so much choice; little India, China town and lots of other little food stalls here and there. The day after we arrived it was Dims 30th; this is what we did; We enjoyed a luxury breakfast of scrambled eggs and sausage (well to us!) at a lovely old fashioned hotel. Dim opened his card from Jane and Jarv and the generous present – thanks guys! We then headed out to explore ... read more

Today we went with Coco to explore the city, starting by having a nice little breakfast at W & O Cafe down the street (I had iced tea!). We started by going to Khoo Khongsi, an ornate temple, and from there sort of wandered around. We went to another small temple, a mosque (I had to wear a black robe because my knees were showing), the Pinanag Peranakan Mansion, Little India, and the Church pier (Ronald spotted a Komodo Dragon in the water as it was hopping up onto some steps!). It was extremely hot and I was glad to have a rest in the afternoon. We have decided to go to Kuala Lumpur tomorrow, so hopefully we won't melt into puddles before then. Technical Details -people are really friendly here without trying to just get ... read more

This morning we ate breakfast, packed up our stuff, and headed to the pier to wait for the 10 o'clock ferry to Pakbahara. The boat came at 10:15 and when we arrived around 11 we went to find a place to take us to Penang, Malaysia. At Andrew Tour they were selling the tickets for 500 each so we went ahead and bought those because she told us the bus left at 11:30. We left at 13:00 in a tuk tuk that took us to the main town where we then boarded a full van that took us to Haytai. We arrived there at 15:15 and had only 15 minutes before the van to Penang came to pick us up so we searched for food and ended up buying rice and chicken and noodles and chicken ... read more

So after Langkawi, we headed back to Georgetown for three nights. Staying in the same hotel made us feel as if we were coming home, seeing all the old stains and smelling all the familiar smells that make this part of Georgetown so very memorable. After disembarking from the thankfully seaworthy ferry, we hustled through the crowds to the roadside to get a cab, only to be told that the cab to our hotel would cost 30 MR! Seeing as we paid 12 MR to get the ferry terminal originally we decided to leg it instead. Up bright and early the next day, we headed out of Georgetown to a little tourist trap called the Spice Garden. This is a Garden of Spices. We saw all the spices, and tropical herbs you can think of, and ... read more

There's a very useful bus in Georgetown, and bonus: it's free! It has FREE CAT written where the destination would usually be. There's no furry animals on this bus though; CAT stands for 'Central Area Transit', and it travels a circuit all around the centre of the city (map here). It was this bus that I hopped onto around 7 in the morning after arriving at the ferry terminal, and off we went to Komtar. I knew it was way too early to go to Hutton Lodge, my guesthouse, but figured there'd be a cafe or something there that would be open for me to have a cup of tea and wait for a more sensible hour. Doors were all closed, and the mall itself did not start business until 10. On the bus I met ... read more

So we headed for Georgetown. Once the British took over Melaka, they wanted to develop Singapore and Georgetown instead, so Penang has a fair few colonial relics, but is also getting pretty developed these days. We had a short political lecture from the taxi driver on arrival, and he was kind enough to point out the Chief Minister's office 61 floors above the town. He is from the Malaysian opposition party. I should mention how amazing Malaysian coach travel is. It is like flying in first class, except at ground level. The only drawback is no toilets, we dare not drink too much liquids! Hotel room was giant and equipped with superfast internet, so spent some time enjoying that. However, we did venture out to see some sights, take in the loud Bollywood tunes in Little ... read more

Hello everyone, Just thought we would fill you in on our progress in south east asia. Singapore was a real contrast of modern and traditional areas. Whilst there we had our first of now many meals from a hawker centre (food court) which is an experience everytime! We've been getting really good chicken and rice dishes with our cheapest meal being only £2 for both of us including drinks!! You don't get that at home! We visited the raffles hotel but decided not to have a drink as it was very expensive, instead we went to the top (56th floor) of the new sky sands 7 star hotel for a drink, overlooking the infinity swimming pool on the top and great views of the city sky line. It was our highlight of Singapore. We also took ... read more
