It was an early start on Tuesday and Erica was the first to use the bathroom where she found Nigel in his normal hiding place, only today he was feeling more adventurous as he decided to venture into our room where he hide under Erica’s backpack. We caught a boat to take us to the tour operator’s office, one and a half hours down the river. The scenery was amazing and we saw buffalos drinking from the river as well as lots of colourful birds. We then caught a minibus to the train station where we were catching the jungle train. Yes a train that travels through the jungle. Erica and Rich thought that it would be some old steam train, despite us being in the 21st Century but it turned out to be a normal ... read more

Well, sorry i went a bit quiet then so this might be a bit of a mammoth blog to catch up. We were in Thailand for a month arriving after 2 days on a hard wooden seat in a slow boat from Laos (this trip deserves its own entry, ive been a bad blog writer but if you want to read about it go to Toms at: http://www.travelblog.org/Asia/Thailand/Krabi/blog-110807.html). We arrived in Chang Mai for the weekend of the King's birthday celebrations, which meant all the places to stay were full and all the museums closed. Eventually, after sending the guys off on a hunt for a hotel we managed to find an overpriced hovel to call home for the night. My time in Chang Mai was spent mainly shopping at the massive night markets, wandering around ... read more

In this part of the world your right hand is used for almost everything: you shake hands with your right hand, you eat with the fingers of your right hand, you use your right hand to exchange money or goods. 'So why do you even have a left hand?' you may ask. Well, my friends, your left hand has only one job. And it is a shitty one. The left hand is used, in cooperation with a hose, to wipe your arse. There is no toilet tissue between you and your ass, not even a measly one ply square. It's just you and a little trickle of water from a hose conveniently located to the left of the porcelain hole. But beware- don’t wipe with the hand that feeds you. I haven't 'gone native' yet. I ... read more

So in almost exactly one day we have seen everything there is to see in Kota Bharu. We went to the cultural musuem (I don't know how to spell that and I can't find a word processor on this computer- sorry) and shopping center, ate at the local eatery, found the waffle place, went to the Thai consultate, and two tourist offices looking for things to do. They sugested Kite and Puppet Making Classes. Seriously. (It's okay- I laughed too, but I really think that is what this town does in their free time). There is no bar, no movie theater, no beach, everything closes at sundown. And I'm scared of puppets. I don't want to make one. Kites I'm okay with (generaly) but there is no wind here and it's too hot to run around ... read more

Hello All: I'm in Malysia- I have a strong inkling to watch Zoolander. Don't know why... Anyway, there was a coup in Thailand. Tanks and marshall law and the whole bit. I tried to get to Burma- the easiest border crssing, but it was closed. No one in or out. So now I'm in Malysia. Woohoo. It's very interesting. We are safe and planning on getting back home on Monday. Assuming all is well with the Thai embassy here. Just wanted to update everyone who sent emails. Thanks for your concern and everything is going okay. I'll send photos of the Bhurma and Malysia borders and cities when I get back home to Thailand. I wanted culture- this is what I get! :) A new adventure everyday! Never thought I'd be saying hello form here (I ... read more

Hello. Thanks for all the messages. We have heard about the Thailand situation but not in much detial. I will look into it further. We are initally planning to go straight from Bangkok to the north to get our Indian visas then go to Loas. If stuff is still looking bad then we may head straight to Loas or even get a flight there. We will see closer to the time. If you hear more do let me know. On to what we've been up too. We went from Penang to the perhentian islands. It turned into a bit of a nightmare journy. It was an overnight bus...so no sleep and it was meant to drop us at the jetty to get a ferry. However, it droped us in a different place at 4:30 am so ... read more

We left Penang in the evening for a long, gruelling overnight bus journey to Kuala Besut (or so we supposed at the time). In general, I've been impressed by the quality of the coaches in Malaysia - you get plenty of space and they are well air-conditioned. I should have been able to sleep in them without too much trouble, except the road from Penang across the Peninsular took a winding route though the jungle and the hills, and the driver tended to hurtle around the corners, meaning I got thrown about too much. I got pretty cold too, as I'd only taken my old yellow Sarong with me for warmth (I bought a new one in Penang, by the way, with batik-printing chinese dragons on it, yelow on dark blue - it's nice) and the ... read more

After the Mayhem of the full moon party we now had the mayhem of re-entering Malaysia and at least 20 hours of travelling to get to Mersing to visit Palau Tiomen. After the apparent ease of going north in Thailand doing the reverse seems to be a lot harder. Everyone was going north I spoke to. In fact you might as well be asking to be shot into space than go south. First it was a night train to Hat Yai from Surat Thani, easily the worse journey so far. All the seats seem to be broke so it was a lottery if the person in front had a seat that went back further than it should, resulting with you having a blokes head in your lap. Everytime the train went over a metal bridge the ... read more

Well, Pam and I have spent the last few days scuba diving, and it's been great. As I mentioned in my previous entry, we had arrived in Koh Tao with high hopes for some of the best diving in the world. We arrived by speedboat (1.5 hours from Chumphon, which was an overnight busride from Bangkok), and checked in to Easy Village, just a few mintues walk from the pier, at a pretty good price. We gota fan room (i.e. fan, but not A/C) which was fine because it wasn't too humid and it was not too hot at night (well, relatively). But it was raining on and off that whole day and the next, so we decided we shouldn't stay on the island too long. We booked a slow boat (overnight) for monday night to ... read more

Well well, Malaysia. What the balls is going on, I have no idea, but it's really cool. If you've been to Asia you have an idea what I'm talking about, but if not then no amount of writing can properly explain it. I'll try anyway.... read more
