A brief introduction to my home state. Kelantan, cradle of Malay culture. Kota Bharu or affectionally known as KB is the capital. Kelantan is situated in the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia & bordering Thailand to the north, Trengganu to the south & facing South China Sea to the east. Kelantan is famous for its cottage industry such as batik printing, songket, woodcarvings, silver/ pewter/ brass work & bamboo handicraft. It is also famed for its cultural legacies such as wayang kulit (puppet shadow play), dikir barat, gasing (top-spinning), kertok, rebana ubi (rebana drum), giant kites, etc. More to come..... ... read more

Khota Baru is in the northeastern corner of Malaysia. Not much here to interest travellers. It's a transit point between Thailand and Malaysia. Still, had a very tasty, simple meal in the night market. A good variety of local foods available. I took beef curry on safran rice. They spoon it into a rectangle of waxed brown paper and fold it up with two elastic bands to hold the package together. There are outdoor tables and chairs but to sit and one and eat you have to buy something to drink because the drinks vendor owns (rents?) the seats and tables. Ate a great meal for about a dollar., then went to a nearby bakery to buy buns for the next day's journey. It stormed during the night, with fantastic crashes of thunder, brilliant flashes of ... read more

As I went further south in Thailand the women's clothing changed, going from shorts or jeans and halter tops to less revealing outfits. In Malaysia, long, loose clothing covers all of the body and headscarves hide hair. They remind me a little of Canadian babies all bundled up for winter, just the face peeking out. It's a Muslim country, after all, and this is their custom. The material looks gauzy and light, but with several layers on it must be nearly crucifying in the heat. Men's clothing often remains the same, although you see some traditional dress and more men wearing skullcaps, which signal that they're practising Muslims, maybe even having done a pilgrammage to Mecca. I'm on Kecil, the smaller of the two Perhentian Islands just off the northeast coast of Malaysia. Here local dress ... read more

My first night in Kota Bharu, which is supposed to be one of the cultural hubs of Malaysia, I consulted my Lonely Planet and discovered that it was one of the nights that has a free show at the cultural center. I dragged along a teacher from Kentucky of all places who was doing a stint in Japan with the JET program. We arrived to a traditional band of about 8 men playing behind the shadow puppet stage. Then I took a seat on the ground up front next to all of the local little kids with their dads and watched the show. Apparently it was another Hindu epic but pretty hard to understand since it was all in Malay. The puppets were really cool though-very elaborate with lots of color. It was hard to distinguish ... read more

Greetings to all you beautiful people ... Everything's fine, everything's under control, life is good I hope. For us two lazy vagabonds, the sun is shining bright, we still enjoy travelling although we sometimes miss you .. but I have said this before, so of course u know it. In the meantime we reached Malaysia and enjoy the relaxed laid-back atmosphere on the Peninsula (mainland). We decided to stray along the east coast, check the quality of water and sand on the beaches, interview the locals, taste some spicy food samples and ... take care of no business (for the moment). Frankly speaking, Malaysia appears not as spectacular to us as the previous places (which does not mean that it's not nice of course). Since it's much more developed, structured than the rest of Southeast-Asia, eveything's ... read more

Juz jutro Tajlandia! Z Singapore pociagiem wybralismy sie w kierunku stolicy Malezji, Kuala Lumpur. Ju... read more

I stepped off the plane this afternoon in Kuala Lumpur, my sandals still damp and sandy from the morning rains on Palau Kecil in the Perhintian Islands. I visited the little group of islands on the north-eastern coast of Malaysia with the intension of a short stop of 2-3 days. I stayed for more than a week and couldn't find any reason to leave. A week earlier I had stepped onto the bus at 09:00, traveling from Kuala Lumpur to Kota Bharu. Apparently there is a large national reserve along the way, however as far as I could tell the whole of the interior of Malaysia is thick untamed jungle. Except for a couple of small settlements and the odd palm plantation, trees and jungle vines spread in every direction. The roads were very good apart ... read more

Firstly anyone who reads this I am dedicating this one to my brother as it's his birthday today (6th June) and I am upset because I am not there. I am also upset that I can not leave Kota Bharu as it is a national holiday and all the trains and buses are booked. So I wish I had stayed on my beach island for one more day. I travelled across the top of Malaysia from Butterworth on the west to Kota Bharu on the east and from there I went to Kuala Besut which is the gateway to PULAU PERHENTIAN ISLANDS. I stayed on an island called Cecil on a place called long beach which got its name because it is the longest beach on the island not because it's a long beach. The island ... read more
