Viv has asked 3 times now if there's another blog on its way ... so I guess it's time for updates? There have been lots of wee adventures since the last one, based on the fact that after Kapas, I decided there's not much point staying in my wee rat-infested city during the weekends, so I've been more proactive at getting out and about. This combined, with readopting my "content is just not good enough" philosophy (back in business for those discussions), life has been pretty sweet. So, in no chronologically-particular order, this is what I've been up to: I finally met the elusive "Chris", who's a trainer that has been living in KB for over 2 years already. He succeeded, where I had failed, in convincing Jo and Brian that it was a "great idea" ... read more

I have been banging on about the Jungle Train since before we left the UK. We have spoke to many people who have come to Malaysia but haven't found anyone who has come to the East or in fact done the Jungle Train! We didn't know if this was a good thing or if there was a reason why not a lot of people have trodden this route. . . From Panang we took an 8 hour bus journey from the West side to Kota Bharu in the North East. We traveled up through sprawling mountains and rain forest with views of mist rising from the rain forest, as it is still monsoon season this side of Malaysia. We settled for 1 night in Kota Bharu and were up at 5:30 a.m heading for the train ... read more

The day after the last entry, I headed off to Kl and was met at the airport by Omar, the driver that had taken me to KB just a couple of weeks before. He greeted me with the words "welcome back to civilization". We drove into KL and discussed all my new insights into life in the north-east, which basically consisted of Omar laughing and saying "told you so". He also informed me that if a monkey looked left and right before crossing the road, there is something seriously wrong with the monkey. Though, this was completely at odds with all the monkeys we had seen sitting happily at the side of the road while he was driving us up there! Helen and I spent the christmas period living in china town, a wee side step ... read more

In Kota Bahru I stayed in a hostel known as KB packpackers, it was really cheap and really good! For 10 ringotts you got bed and breakfast, bargin! In Kota Bharu they had some cool markets during the day where you could buy most stuff, they generally smelt of fish but in amongst the smell you would get terrific frangrences from all the different spices. The night markets sold excellent food and possibly the best chicken on a stick ever! They had a culture centre that displayed traditional Malaysian activities such as spinning tops and shaddow puppets. Spinning tops were hard to use but I managed to make it spin once! The shaddow play was cool for a short time, I am glad I have seen one but maybe wont be too upset if I never ... read more

Our relaxing time in Samui had to come to an end, Thai visas ran out, so we departed on the ferry and caught a minivan south, destination Penang - Malaysia. The journey itself was nothing to write home about - long, hot and sweaty (no surprise there!). After border formalities, an interesting sunset and another couple of hours we finally reached Penang late in the evening. Eventually we found a hostel and sat down to some welcome Indian food in a nearby food court. We quickly realised that we were going to like Penang a great deal! In terms of famous sights, on first appearance, Penang doesn't seem to have too many. What it does have though is a charming mix of architecture, cultures, and religions and of course food. First day we strolled alongside beautifully ... read more

Blog starts with 'via' again. Via Marang and Kuala Terengganu, we make our way to Kota Bharu in the extreme Northeast of peninsular Malaysia. A short look at the map confirms my suspicion that we're almost in Thailand already. KB is the capital of Kelantan, the most conservative and staunchly Muslim of Malaysia's states (more, so much more on that later). The city is also famous for its diverse cuisine, which for us was the main reason to go there. After the disappointing, pricey fare on Kapas, we wanted to indulge in great food once again. And that's what we did the next five or so days. Eat, eat, eat. For breakfast, we go to an Indian restaurant where I finally, finally get my beloved masala dosai, which turns out to be the best I've ever ... read more
