Yeah... Dad's here for a visit... I went down to Kuala Lumpur to meet him and as he was feeling good we booked and caught the next flight up to Langkawi. On our way to the flight we literally bumped into Drew and Kat at the airport, who I hadn't seen for years. The last time Dad was here I was staying on Drew's boat in Phuket and the boys were happy to see each other. We're all on the same flight, staying in the Royal Hotel for the night and had a great start! Next day I took Dad up to have a look at Aria, he managed to get onboard ok and he decided he could manage to stay onboard which was great. Unfortunately I have new crew onboard, all German's, but that's life! ... read more

Working on Aria has been an incredible experience. I have learned so much not only about the whole design of yachts and reasoning behind things, but the whole shipyard and refit experience is one I will never forget, for many good and bad reasons. So at the moment, we've been out of the shipyard for 8 months and finally the work and jobs are finished, we're now onto general maintenance and upkeep. The sea trials have been completed, everything is in working order and looking fabulous. The work we achieved has more than complimented the boat she is now modern, simplified, with many new features and designs both inside and out. From flush teak decks, new seating areas and a new swim platform outside to a basically new engine room, electrical systems, plumbing, water maker, fridges ... read more

I went to a place near my hometown(sungai petani) called Segantang Garam. Segantang is measurement used by Malays before pounds and kilograms.. and garam is salt. The interesting part bout it it is the floating chalet.. yes it floats. I brought my kids and we had a great time fishing and relaxing...... read more

I've got a meeting in KL next week and our pre-meeting activity is to reflect on learning we have done in Malaysia. I've learned that I really don't like cable cars and I do like beach holidays :) Both of these conclusions I came to last week when a group of us headed off to celebrate our Chinese new year holidays in Langkawi. It was in fact, my first ever, beach holiday. Obviously, not my first time on a beach, being a kiwi kid and living in southern Italy for 4 years, but my first ever go to a beach, go for a swim, drink some cocktails, eat some food, go to bed, get up in the morning, go to the beach, go for a swim (well ... you get the idea) type holiday! Now that ... read more

LP warned that my next stop might ultimately take longer than I'd planned, and they were right. The book recounted the experiences of backpackers who'd originally planned to stay at Langkawi for a few days, which eventually morphed into weeks, and even longer for some. I was no exception. Having originally set aside three days for this sojourn, I couldn't resist extending just one extra day in this island paradise, and this being my last stop in the country, thus postponing my inevitable departure from the land of roti canai. Even bigger than Penang itself, Langkawi is actually a collection of a total of 99 islands, belonging to Malaysia's northern-most state of Kedah, bordering the deep Islamic southern Thailand provinces. You would think that 99 idyllic verdant islets set in crystal blue waters would in no ... read more

Having arrived just over a week ago in sparkling clean Singapore, i literally headed off after one night at my friend Manons to catch a dreaded 10hr night bus to the Perhentian islands. The awful thing about this bus ride was not only the crazy driving by the driver, which i noticed having arizen from the dead and in the need of a pee stop. This was when i noticed all other passengers were dead to the world, whilst i was witnessing the craziest overtaking skills (after india, still quite crazy driving, just no honking but lots of light flashing!). Anyway having arrived on the smaller island of the two, Cecil island and spent much of the morning searching for a decent guesthouse which took cc payment, we finally settled in at the Matahari guesthouse and ... read more

I went back to my village in Jitra, Kedah for two weeks. I really need this break after a very depressing final semester. I just need to calm down and sort my life out. I wouldn't be talking about Kedah this time instead I'm going to write about my short trip to Perlis by bike! It was a one day trip but was a very fun one indeed! I noticed that not many tourists or even traveler ever bother to come to Perlis (including me) but Perlis really got something to offer. I'm stunned by the spectacular view in the rural areas. You think you've seen enough of spectacular view of paddy field? Wait till you come to Perlis! AMAZING! On 7th June 2011, Faeza finally agreed to bring me for a ride around. We decided ... read more

I left Hua Hin at 9.15pm on the Thursday night and arrived in Hat Yai about 8am. On the way just before Surat Thani we had to go through about 3km of water caused by the major floods in the area. On the bus I also found out that the train would still not go all the way to Hat Yai for a number of days. After a little bit of searching I found a minibus direct from the bus station to the pier just out of Satun. Unfortunately I had bought a combined minibus and boat ticket so I ended up having to wait at the ferry terminal for about 3 hours to catch my boat. The crossing was very smooth and just over an hour later I was in Langkawi, Malaysia. I shared a ... read more
