Luang Prabang We arrived in Luang Prabang and the first thing that struck me was how continental it felt. The main reason for this is the French colonial architecture. As a city it oozes character. It almost feels like you are in a time warp as you can imagine the former capital looking exactly the same now as it did 50 years ago. Luang Prabang as a city is on the World Heritage list which has helped it maintain it's sleepy charm. After arriving late we hunted around for a guest house with rooms available and we eventually found one. We probably paid over the odds but we were tired and getting desperate! Decided to book a trip to see a couple of waterfalls located around an hour or so outside the city. On arrival you ... read more

Olen siis viela Laosin mantereella. Hylkasin suunnitelman ylittaa rajan Vietnamiin pohjosesta. Osottautui oletettua vaikeammaksi, joten tulin takasin Luang prabangiin. Aion jatkaa taalta matkaa paakaupunkiin Vientianeniin ja ottaa sielta bussin Vietnamiin. Paljon on tapahtunut reilussa viikossa jonka oon viettanyt kierrellen pohjois Laosin maaseutua. Naki todella kuinka kehittymaton maa Laos on. Koneista ei olu tietoakaan. Kalastajat n... read more

Imagine coming home after a really hard day, putting on a baggy shirt and comfy trousers, snuggling down into a soft sofa, with you favorite music playing in the background and a roaring open fire crackling beside you. Around you are your ever smiling family and friends, you are sharing a beer and a laugh..... Well this is how it feels every day you spend in Lao, it is by far and away the most chilled out, friendly and beautiful country I have ever had the pleasure of visiting. I have only been in Thailand for two days, as I write this, and I am already pining for Lao. It got me thinking; maybe I should have never gone to Lao, as now that I have had a taste, all other countries will be compared to ... read more

finally out of the tourist trap and into LAOS !! it only took an 11 hour overnight bus ride followed by the SNAP decision to continue immediately onto the next stop. it was a mere 4 more hours on a very cramped (knees jammed into seat ahead) local bus to 'ban lao'. in 'ban lao' i borrowed a bicycle from a little girl on her way to school (no not a random little girl but the hoteliers daughter). at this point, you may have realized that my knees never came close to reaching the horizontal and that would make for an unpleasant ride at best! you are partially correct, it was uncomfortable but i would say it was most pleasing. it was tiring but more due to the constant salutations, or rather my return greetings, from ... read more

Hi everyone! Have been doing a lot of heavy travelling, so have not been able to get to a computer. So here goes: Chiang Mai Wevt on a 2 day trek in the jungle. As you saw we were with a group fo people we had never met bfore, but it turned out to be OK. The first day was v. hard on the old legs and lungs, having done no exercise for 4 wks. The slope was v. unforgiving in the scorching heat. We swam in a waterfall and slid down the rocks which was amazing. In all the trek took 4.5 hours to a 'hill tribe', a community of about 50 people who are self sustaining in the jungle. The place was amazing, they even have a school. Al the younget kids run about ... read more

Laos Terrible Legacy Although officially a neutral country, Laos was host to a secret and terrible war between the USA and Vietnam. As a result, Laos earned the distinction of being the most bombed country in the history of modern warfare.- Staggering Statistics - The USA conducted over 10,000 missions during the nine-year war and dropped over a million bombs. This equated to one ton of explosives dropped for every man, woman, and child living in Laos at the time. The war in Laos was so secret that the country's name was never included in any of the original US records; it was referred to as "the other". Neutral Laos was off limits according to the Geneva agreement. As a workaround, the US sent CIA agents and soldiers in under the guise of civilians; the air ... read more

So here we are 1 whole month into our journey! Our Lonely Planet is looking suitably travel worn, I have more hair on my face than my head and we keep seeing the same people everywhere we go. "There's that Ginger guy we saw in Bangkok!!" etc......, we have officially become part of the Lonely Planet set (spot us all standing on street corners reading LP South East asia on a show string, looking confused and being hassled by Tuk-Tuk drivers), Monks keep flirting with Carla (we think they may have heard rumours about 'touching' from Monk-chat) and we have met some great people all with the same desire to see as much of the 'real' Thailand, Laos etc as possible. Our next stop was Luang Prabang, a town so unspoilt that it has been granted ... read more

Ollaan saatu helposti vierahtamaan jo useampi paiva taalla Vang Viengissa. Luolia talta alueelta loytyy useita. Me olemme tyytyneet kuitenkin kaymaan vain kahdessa. Luolan ... read more

30/sep this was the 3rd consecutive morning that i ate at 'pizza prabang'. it was also the 3rd day that i ordered a fried egg baguette and a fruit shake. more importantly, it was the 3rd day that they had to go out for some ingredient(s). don't know what is kept on hand but i know i am getting fresh ingredients on my sandwich!!!! maybe it was my fault for changing up the desired fruit shake! no, i don't think that was it because once i ordered a pineapple shake but received a coconut one. bopenyang=no worries!! at lunchtime i went for a massage. thought the pretty girl was going to be my masseuse but it wasn't to be. holly, a fellow traveler, got the girl and i got the guy. the couples massage, we had ... read more

We have just arrived into Luang Nam Tha which is in the North of Laos, not far from the Chinese border. We have had an incredible week - not always easy and often uncomfortable - but filled with amazing experiences. We finally forced ourselves to leave the beautiful and relaxing city, Luang Prabang, and headed west by water, bound for Luang Nam Tha and determined to get there avoiding buses when possible. The two day journey on a long boat allowed us to see incredible scenery. However, the scenery didn't really change for two days and becomes slightly less impressive when you are sat on a really hard bench with a numb bum for the second day in a row! We stopped in a small town for the night which had nothing remarkable except the wide ... read more
