Hello, from the capital of Laos. First impressions of Vientiane are that, it's a very relaxed city. Visitors have little to fear, except for open sewers and drains on the pavements. The odd car whizzes by, but definately the least congested capital we've experienced in South East Asia. We checked into a nice hotel for the first couple of days before settling on Thong Bay Guest House which is a little bit cheaper but highly recommended. It's located just outside the city centre amongst the backdrop of a beautiful garden and plenty of chill-out corners. So far we've been taking things slowly due to my tender ribs. I injured myself whilst belly-flopping in Vang Vieng. Poor old Amy is quite tired the last couple of days having to carry my ruck-sack to the hotel. I feel ... read more

After our first night in Luang Prabang we ventured out in search of a decent, cheap breakfast and had barely crossed the road when we found the place that would end up serving us breakfast for the remainder of our stay. The little guesthouse/restaurant across the street does nice omelette and bacon or french fries with a nice big baguette for a very reasonable price, and it's probably the most enjoyable breakfast we've had so far on our travels. The winner is the french-influenced baguettes and omelettes that provide us with food so close to home. My building cravings for home food have been somewhat satiated thanks to this place. Plenty of wats in Laos, like Thailand. There seem to be a lot more monks here though, maybe because it's a poorer country and the monastery ... read more

What can I say about Luang Prabang that hasn't already been more-eloquently phrased in the guidebooks by a thousand gushing travel-writers? Uhm... The snake whiskey totally kicks ass! At The Spiritual Center of Laos I made it into Luang Prabang after two crazy and hectic days on the Mekong river. Coming in on the evening of the 17th, it looked to me like a civilized shelter from the wildlife and wilderness and scams and wide world of sports of the days preceding. Mike and I and the two Canadian kids and the Swedes decided we'd all shack up together somewhere, but we were tired and we shared the feeling that having left our backpacks sitting in the engine room for two days had made them a lot heavier. In reality, though, they were lighter. We found ... read more

So.... we made it to the Laos border, which is just across the Mekong river from Thailand, and were greeted by the most friendly immergration officer ever encountered. It actually only took 10 mins to get our visas and they now give out 30 day visas which is great for us as we want to stay 3 weeks. Houei Xai is the place you end up in and it is nothing more than one dusty street with guesthouses and shops along it. Someone had told us that Laos is like Thailand was 20 years ago and it is like stepping back in time just going over the river. The roads are aufull and anything imported is much more expensive. We checked into a guesthouse run by a woman who can only be described as a grumpy ... read more

Well, there is very little to write about Vientiane. It is basically another city (albeit a tiny city - Bendigo would be bigger) without a great deal to do or see. Our bus trip from Vang Vieng was "interesting". Let's just say that we definately had had one too many drinks tubing which resulted in a very long and hot trip to Vientiane. I faired better than Lesley (thank god for the empty pringles pack hey Lesley!!!) but was still hot, bothered and grumpy by the time we reached Vientiane, it didn't help that our rickshaw driver proceeded to rip us off and drop us off, what seemed like miles, from where we had originally asked to be taken. After an afternoon of resting up and a good night sleep we decided to go and check ... read more

Luang Prabang We arrived in Luang Prabang and the first thing that struck me was how continental it felt. The main reason for this is the French colonial architecture. As a city it oozes character. It almost feels like you are in a time warp as you can imagine the former capital looking exactly the same now as it did 50 years ago. Luang Prabang as a city is on the World Heritage list which has helped it maintain it's sleepy charm. After arriving late we hunted around for a guest house with rooms available we eventually found one, we probably paid over the odds but we were tired and getting desperate! Decided to book a trip to see a couple of waterfalls located around an hour or so outside the city. On arrival you follow ... read more

Exposition I'd been travelling for four days in Laos with an Englishman named Mike, two Canadians (Mike and Paul), and two Swedes (Johanes and Daniel). We were all staying in the upstairs of a fantastic, newly-remodeled guesthouse. We had the entire top floor: three king-size beds, two twin beds, three bathrooms, and two balconies, all for only fifteen U.S. dolllars per night--total. Mike had his own room, the Swedes shared another, and I was bunked up with the two Canadian kids (who're from Victoria, in fact, which is quite close to home for me). Rising Action This particular night, we started out with Beer Lao at some nicer bars, then setttled a little too early into drinking harsh Lao moonshine at one of the riverside bars frequented by the locals and the most adventurous. They call ... read more

Up at the crack of dawn, as usual, not just to the static sounds of our alarm clocks, but to the perpetual crow of the neighborhood roosters, we decided to kick up our morning jog a bit and climb the stairs up one side of the Phousi Stupa and down the other. We were both sweating endless streams of perspiration. It was very cool though as we realized we were in the locals’ workout circuit. I guess the stupa stairs are like the Santa Monica stairs… although one set of the stupa stairs is all you need to feel like you’ve had a good workout. Before breakfast, we popped in on a few tour agencies to get in with a hill tribe trekking group. Discovering that no one was really doing that today, we had an ... read more

Further to my moan about the 'Friends' bar culture in Vang Vieng I have to confess that I did start eating frequently at a cafe purely because they showed 'The Simpsons' all the time, so I am guilty of hypocrisy, but then Simpsons is far better than Friends so maybe not that much. Had a good day out Kayaking down the river, not difficult going downstream, a few rapids and one that almost toppled me, credit to the guide,he gave us a quality picnic bbq lunch, then at the end of the day he took us almost up to our necks in water into a deep dark cave, with 'candles' as our lighting system, candles?!!??
