Still hanging out here in Sunny Savanahket, it's just so friendly and pleasant I just can't be bothered to get on the bus and move on, not in a hurry, I'm done with the rushing around to see amazing things, It's nice chilling here getting to know the locals. Took my laundry down a shop, and the patrons filled me with local tea and a shedload of Rice Whiskey, here drinking in the morning is normal, I spent the afternoon recovering. College students in particular like to stop you in the street and practise a bit of English. Visited the local 'Dinosaur Museum' yesterday, one room and al but it had a certain quaintness and the curator was very proud of it, usually in big musuems I spend a max of 2 minutes in one room, ... read more

OK, OK, OK, I admit I have been a bit slow in keeping you all upto date with our travels, I promise to try harder in future. So after arriving in Stromtrem only to discover that there are no ATM's (again) and that we cannot change money at the boarder we needed to find a solution , the solution seemed to be to go across the boarder carry on as far as Pakse where there was a bank we could get a cash advance on our cards, the only hiccup in this plan was by the time we paid for the hotel for the night some food and the transport, we would have exactly minus three dollars. The answer to this minor problem came in the form of Mr T the travel agent who agreed that ... read more

Vientiane as a capital city is amazingly quiet, especially after coming from the chaos that is China. There’s hardly any traffic, the Tuk Tuk drivers take no for an answer the first time you say it and there are hardly any street vendors and beggars tugging at your shirt every 5 minutes! Strange the whole population of Laos is significantly less than any of the majority of cities we visited in China. Despite the national midnight curfew we found an open air night club on the forth floor of the Chan Palace hotel. Open until 4am this popular club plays hosts to the trendy Vientiane locals and it wasn't long before we were chatting to a friendly group who insisted we help them finish a couple bottles of Johnny Walker. They would not take no for ... read more

I didn't think the journey from the Full Moon party to the Tiomen Islands could be bettered as the worst journey of my life. It has and my god it was bad!!! First we left Pai at 10 on the night. This was fine but I had decided that to celebrate United's easy victory over Liverpool which I watched in a bar full of Thai Liverpool fans so I'd had a few drinks and spent the first two hours crossing my legs cause the beer had gone straight through me! I couldn't sleep either as everytime I nodded off my head would get whacked off the window, seat, person sitting next to me, etc as the driver who was clearly on a mission was really driving into the corners. He was a nutter. Following that we ... read more

Vang VienG We arrived at Vang Vieng at around 2am, feeling rough after the long journey which seemed to take an age we went straight to sleep at the first guest house in sight. Up bright and early and feeling very hungry we stopped at the first restaurant we stumbled across. I had a look through the menu to order food and found that the last page was a menu of pizza and shakes made from magic mushrooms, weed and opium - crazy!! The village in general is hugely chilled out. You can see that it is very much geared towards backpackers and has more of a western feel to it than Luang Prabang. The bars are open past 11pm, the restaurants have ‘happy’ pizza's, mushroom shakes and opium tea on the menu and there is ... read more

"Laos", add this to your list of offences commited by the French around the world. The place is really called Lao (pronounced like shower, like when you take a shower at the end of a long day of drinking and tubing down a muddy river...), but under french colonization, the silent S was added to the end. This has led to generations of Europeans and Africans and North and South Americans calling the place "Laos" (like "louse", like a bug you get in your hair when you share hats or a person who drinks too much). It's a real shame when you travel through the place for days and then hear some of those same foreigners who have also been there for days (or weeks even) still pronouncing it like they'd call a booze-hound. I guess ... read more

Well we made it to Laos a couple days ago on an overngiht train from bangkok. Wow is there ever a change from bangkok to even the capital city of Laos. In Laos there is only about 1/16 of the amount of tourists as thailand so the cab drivers and tuk tuk drivers and the rest of the community are not out to get your money like thailand. The people here are very intrigued by seeing us because tourism is not big here..they choose to ask us many questions about our culture and where we are from instead. So far i love it here. All the houses are made out of sticks, there are unpaved roads and living is easy and simple. We are definatly lucky to live in a country like canada. When we got ... read more

From Hanoi we had the choice of taking a 20 hour bus ride into Laos. First it would have taken us south (back towards where we came from) because that's the only border foreigners are allowed crossing, then we would have spent 2 hours at the border before it finally made it's way north to Vientiane, the capital of Laos. The only benefit was the low cost of $16. It was a tough decision, but we opted for the 1 hour, $110 flight! We only read in our guide books after that Laos airlines aren't quite up to the safety standards we enjoy in Canada. While getting our visas, we discovered that Canadians pay the highest amount for a Laos visa. How weird is that. Even the US, who bombed the shit out of the country ... read more
