Our last day in Vientiane was spent lounging by a pool! Woke up to another hot & sticky day & had 7 hours to waste until we got our night bus to Savannakhet. Skip found a luxury hotel that allowed us to use their pool for US$7.50. It was a great way to ease my hangover from the night before. Went to our favorite sex tourists bar & had a night on Singapore Slings. Alot of old white guys with their young lao girls thinking their gods gift. Most of them even acknowledged us when they were leaving with a little smurk or to tell us how great the bar is......An ozzie even turning round & saying "you gotta love this place" We were sitting right by the stairs & had been laughing for most of ... read more

I spent a couple more days in Chiang Mai as I was really enjoying their way of life, the people are beautiful and it is a very relaxed outdoor atmosphere. Most days I would get my daypack and just walk to see what I could find. On my final day in Chiang Mai walk I met and spoke with many local people who approached me. even a gentleman from Japan came up to me for a chat. I found out some local knowledge and that on Mondays many Thais wear yellow as a support for the king (as he was born on a Monday) and on this particular night the Kings son was in town and there was to be a celebration and parade for him. I plained to go back to that area later that ... read more

So we fly to Vientiane in Laos and then fly on to Luang Prabang. Luang Prabang is so different from Thailand. It has a very slow pace of life. It resembles Koh Samui more than anywhere else I have been. We headed out for a quick lunch at a restaurant that was situated on the most picturesque lily pond. Our lunch turned into a comedy of errors as the people around us were served our food and we were served every one else's- after our lunch eventually arrived we had only moments to eat it before making our way back to our group for the walking tour of the town. The first Buddhist temple we visited was extremely peaceful. It was a beautiful sunny day and what made it lovely was that we were the ... read more

Me again (Amy) Ed is being a lazy fart, we have tv again so he can't tear himself away from it for fear he will miss some football highlights. We have just reached our last stop in Laos (Vientiane-: the capital) and will be glad to see the back of bus journeys in Laos. We finished up in Luang Prabang with a fantastic massage at the Red Cross. Our muscles returned to some sort of flexibility, we were ready to move onto our next destination (Vang Vieng) and activity (Tubing). The road from Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng was targetted by bandits back in 2003, a number of Laos and two Swiss tourists were murdered and since this time most buses carry an armed soldier. I had told Ed about this but he thought I was ... read more

Sitting in the internet cafe and the server just went down. Clever as I am, I’m going to type up my entry using Word, save the doc, then cut/paste later, when/if the server comes up. I think Buon Pen wants me to log off. I just explained that I’ll type until the server is back up, then we can re-boot this machine. His smile makes me think that either he doesn’t have the energy or the know-how to argue with me, or he completely understands me and it’s okay. I was just thinking that, after 5 days in Laos, I could really get used to living here. It’s very much like rural/poor Mexico. This town in particular, Louang Prabang, reminds me a lot of Oaxaca: it’s rural with a colonial European flair. The poor are extremely ... read more

The Laos border crossing is the most laid-back - and the most friendly - that I've ever encoutered. A 20 bhat ferry across the Mekong took us to a little jetty, where we precariously stepped over a couple of wooden fishing boats onto dry land. A very friendly smiling local (alarms start ringing) greeted us. "Hello! Welcome to Laos," he said thrusting a small piece of paper at me. I almost pushed right past and ignored it before I realised it was the immigration form. I already knew that currency would be more complicated over here - we'd been advised to take mostly Thai bhat and spend that, but take a little in Lao kip. Our guidebook (Footprint, which I have to say is NOT well suited to backpackers) lists all prices in US$, and I ... read more

Bus trip to Louang Prabang took over 6 hours and all of it was on twisty, curvy roads through amazing scenery. I would have liked more of the scenery without any of the curvy road bits. I nearly tossed my cookies before our second stop. I was sweaty, shaky, and certain my nauseous stomach was going to be ugly, soon. At the stop, I searched my bag until I found my personal drug of choice: Meclizine (used to stop vertigo). I took that, shared an interesting half tuna and green salad sandwich (on the requisite baguette) with Barbara, and drank a bit of water. This bus stop intro’d me to Asian toilets. To wit, we’ve had a standard porcelain seat to do our business. But, this, this was different, very similar to public toilets encountered in ... read more

I am really sore today. I could barely get my hips working to get me out of bed. For our morning adventure, we headed toward the local market - the same one where our guide bought bananas for us yesterday. This was maybe not the best idea… the first thing we see laid out for sale… a couple of rats. We went on to see a fox-like creature, snake on a stick, and bats. Apart from all the intestines and other meat substitutes we’ve seen at other markets, these meat substitutes were the nastiest. Now, we haven’t seen any rats in the streets, or anywhere. So, either there aren’t that many, or they catch them and eat them right away. In any case, it made us both a little suspicious of the beef kabob we ate ... read more

The two-day boat trip down the Mekong river from Huay Xai to Luang Prabang has been billed as one of the most worthwhile journeys to take in Laos. It certainly introduced me to the natural beauty of Laos, and to the great people here. It also gave me a front row seat to witness the damage that tourism and outside influences can do to a peaceful, agrarian culture. I took a lot of pictures on the trip, and many of them were quite beautiful. However, many of them were also crap, and a lot of the landscape shots seemed redundant. So, I've edited the pics down to the 30 you see here, and given some commentary. Enjoy. My Top Four Photos The first four photos here are really my favorites of the whole bunch, reminding me ... read more
