Our final night in Pai was Tuesday 26th September. We went to Buffalo Exchange where Matt ended up getting up to play songs on a guitar. It was a really good night and the whisky we were drinking may have been the driving force behind his solo act (later accompanied by a German called Seb on bongos). As we left we bumped into Carrie and Conor (the Canadians from Chiang Mai), and the following day walking round Pai we kept bumping into people we had met, both there and in Chiang Mai, starting to feel like you live somewhere when you are travelling means it's probably time to move on no matter how much you like it! We decided to get a minibus back to Chiang Mai as our next stop was to be Laos and ... read more

For my last few days in Laos, going off cycling on my own through some semi-remote villages seemed like a nice idea, as I had been sticking so much to the tourist trail and also spending way too much time eating and lazing about! It seemed surprisingly straightforward to organise, I found an ok mountain bike to hire for $2 a day, I left my rucksack at a hotel and just strapped my day pack to my bike. It felt so great just to travel with a couple of kilos for a change, I didn't even take any shampoo with me! I had my first minor hiccup only 6km along the road when one of the pedals on the bike fell off... I had checked the bike over quite carefully and asked for a couple of ... read more

Matka on jatkunut Luang Prabangista Phonsavanin kautta Vang Vieng nimiseen kylaan. Oleskelumme Luang Prabangissa venahti paivalla aiotusta Katjan flunssan ja molempia vaivanneen yleisen aamu-unisuuden vuoksi. En ymmarra miten onnistuin raahaamaan itseni kesalla toihin aamuyon tunteina, kun nyt ei millaan meinaa jaksaa nousta klo seitseman jalkeen lahtevaan bussiin. Laosissa bussit lahtevat aikaisin aamulla, koska lyhyetkin matkat kestavat tunteja. Paikalliset tuntuvat lahes poikkeuksetta karsivan matkapahoinvoinnista. Jokaisella bussimatkalla olen paassyt todistamaan, kuinka joku voi pahoin ja oksentaa ulos bussin ikkunasta tai yleisesti busseissa jaossa oleviin pieniin ... read more

28/sep visited 'tad sae' waterfalls today and had a swim. nothing better than being in a hot tropical climate and swimming in a cool waterfall. well, maybe that ice cream comes close. had a pistachio flavored ice cream today. in the evening, i went to a traditional dance. it would have been confusing, with all the kidnappings by gods, if not for the program. fortunately, i read it the previous night when i found the national theatre, as i did not get one upon arrival. even more fortunate was that i remembered what i had read. 29/sep visited a palace first then headed to another waterfall, 'kuang si', again for some swimming. brought along a great pork chop, grilled of course, and a buffalo burger (water buffalo), as well as some unknown veggies. sometimes, i believe ... read more

24/sep climbed mount 'phousi' (said like a certain female anatomical part) today. i honestly was not interested in the name even though i had heard it from another traveler before my arrival. that is until i saw the 'phousi massage' parlor. it added a bit of humor, as did the 'phousi' market. 25/sep watched sunday night football on monday morning, live. the central time zone is 12 hours behind making this a possibility. i didn't waste the entire day with tv football. i visited tad sae waterfall for an afternoon swim. then met some people for dinner and drink. 26/sep to start this day i went for my typical breadfast sandwich. there i had the unusual experience of having a chicken begging for food, much in the same way a dog does. it stood at my ... read more

Toivon etta olo paranee ennen huomista, jolloin edessa on kuuden tunnin laivamatka Nong Kiawiin. Vatsatautia lukuun ottamatta Laos on ollut erittain positiivinen kokemus. En tiennyt mita odottaa tanne tullessani, mutta ainakin ylitti kaikki toiveeni. Taalla ihmiset on paljon rennompia kun Thaimaassa. Kenellakaan ei tunnu olevan kiire minnekaan. Matkustellaan varmaan viela noin viikko yhessa Dorten kanssa. Sitten ma suunnistan pohjoseen patikoimaan ja Vietnamiin. Dorte taas lahtee etelaan pain. Vahan kieltamatta jannittaa menna Vietnamiin yksinani, mutta olen myos kovin innoissani. On mukava huomata miten matkustelu muuttaa mua ihmisena. Asiat jotka ennen tuntu niin tarkeilta menettaa merkityksensa. Ja s... read more

Luang Namtha, Laos September 5, 2006 Sean: Our trip to the frontier of the Chinese hinterlands - converging on its border with Laos - entailed a lengthy couple of bus trips. For two days we passed through mountainous countryside and a few decent urban centers - the last being the small (by Chinese standards) city of Mohan. Nothing too interesting, but I was still surprised at the size considering its remote, boondocks location - even the far-flung corners of the world’s most populous country are well populated. So as we bid goodbye to the friendly border guards (“I hope you enjoyed China!”…they seriously said that) we were able to catch a little taxi that took us across the “no man’s land” to the town of Boten on the Lao side. After a three minute trek around ... read more

After another trip by minivan, this time fortunately a lot shorter, we arrived in the capital of Laos: Vientiane. Till now we haven't been that lucky with the weather here, when we arrived it was raining pretty heavily and till now it has been pretty much a mix of rain, cloudiness and sudden heat. What makes the rain extra annoying is that the streets here aren't that great and there are often no real sidewalks, so you have to walk on the muddy dirt roads. I wonder if they are just working on the roads (at some places they obviously are) or that it's always that way, cause in other parts, the roads look actually very well taken care off. Hmmz, guess I'll never find out. I have to say that I don't like Vientiane as ... read more

Rather annoyingly we are forced to leave our safe haven of Top North Guest House, our lovely swimmingpool, chicken sandwiches and most importantly, Chaing Mai, to go and try somewhere else. Next stop, Laos. Now i dont think many people who havent been to Asia have even heard of Laos and we certaintly didnt know what to expect from our trip here. From Chaing Mai we had a 6 hour minibus journey to the Thailand border where we stayed over night by the river, had a few beers and wathed the the Arsenal and Liverpool games back to back. (i know people keep saying 'why are you travelling when you are doing the same things i do in england when im away' such as watch football, see friends from england etc etc etc. well, i dont ... read more

I spent the last nine days thoroughly relaxing in the 4000 Islands, a bit touristy, but still very laidback part of Laos near the Cambodian border where there are as many water buffaloes as people, and the only electricity available is supplied from generators... It was such a beautiful place, I really regret not taking more photographs, but my camera battery ran out, and I had a lot of trouble recharging it! Going for a walk, there were so many palm trees everywhere, which really made you feel like you were at the beach, which was great for relaxing. I did see a couple of sort-of beaches on another island (patches of sand on riverbanks), and I think there would have been more had it not been for rainy season. But because the water level was ... read more
