Sorry Kek, Your account is still jammed so I couldn't send you your B-day pics. Anywhooo, I am a lazy bitch and won't get up to find my flash disk, put the photos onto it and take it those 8 steps over to your room... Download them or help yourself to my computer files.. (I am still feeling sick, so you won't interrupt any valuable work process) And for next year... No more drink and driving! Ps: Puking is a good indication for you've past the point. Opening the door won't always do the trick.... read more

Greetings from Laos! I've just checked the BBC website and found out about the coup in Thailand - don't worry we're miles away from there (in a different country) and won't be re-entering Thailand for a good couple of weeks yet, hopefully it'll have calmed down by then! Anyway, it's just me today, so I apologise in advance for any bad jokes, because Jill is currently in bed feeling a bit flu-ee! But she is on the mend, which is good! Last time we left you we were in Chiang Mai. From there we travelled upto Chiang Khong, on the border with Laos, by bus - including 2 hours on the local bus which was a bone rattling experience and quite scary - i decided to stop looking out of the driver's window when he started ... read more

After 1 1/2 weeks in Thailand we decided to leave for the next country on our wish list: Laos! We had been told the nicest way to get there would be by boat, so we decided to do so.... However, this would be quite an undertaking, since it would take 3 days.. First 6 hours in a minivan to the border, overnight stay in Chiang Kong (still Thailand), then 7 hours on the boat, overnight stay in the middle of nowhere, and again 7 hours on the boat. Well.. it was quite an experience. The boat trip was definitely beautiful, and it was great to see that this wasn't just a tourist thing, but also the main transport means for people that live along the Mekong.. We stopped several times to pick up people, luggage, chickens, ... read more

A long long time ago... I went with Nami and Phanlany on a field trip to Khua District, Phongsali Province. (Udomxai was the closest out of the available location list...and we flew there...accepted?) It was the first time for me leaving my secure and compfortable VTE. We took the plane to U, where we got picked up. A 3 hours drive followed. Windy roads (which undoubtfully did not pass the criteria for acceptable streets of a german girl...) leading to places back in time. Life can't have possible been any different a hundred years back. That's as well for the road-side villages we were passing as the final ones I visited with Phanlany. Khua District, where our office is located, is a tiny place, which does get the occasional backpacker (...lost ones?!?). Our original plan of ... read more

In Southern Laos I saw a wonderful Khmer style temple that was built around the same period as Angkor Wat in Cambodia, and was almost as impressive in its own way. I hired a bicycle to cycle to the ruins and had a great day trip exploring the area. The temple was built at the edge of a mountain with steps leading up to different levels, and as I climbed up each level I kept meeting different people and stopping to have a chat! I finally met some people from Adelaide, which was really nice! I had been travelling for 8 weeks before I met anyone from the same city as me - all of the Australians I have met seem to be either from Sydney or Melbourne - and most can't seem to tell from ... read more

Having been in Laos for almost a month I needed to do something to either extend or renew my 30 day visa, and passing through Savannakhet, a town on the Mekong that is also a border crossing to Thailand I decided it would be fun to go to Thailand for a couple of hours and then on reentering the country buy a new visa for Laos... I'm really glad I renewed my visa rather than getting an extension, as going to Thailand for a couple of hours was a lot of fun! Crossing the Mekong on a boat, there seemed to be a lot of Lao people who were heading to Mukdahan in Thailand - when I arrived there I realised why - the shopping in Thailand is fantastic compared to Laos. The town on the ... read more

The following covers all of the time from leaving Chiang Kong in Thailandon the morning of 14th to leaving Luang Prabang on Monday morning 18th September (and a sad day that was). First, and continuing impressions of Laos is that it is fantastic. This morning we were out of the fabulous guest house and packed and ready to cross the river (and the border) into Laos, saying goodbye to Thailand. It was sad, and with much non-purchase regret (for the thai triangle pillows) we boarded some very skinny boats, packs and all and zoomed across the mekong. We were met there by our local guide Mr Kamfun (or fun for short). After all of the border formalities and money exchange we jumped into some jumbo's (see the description of seongteouws from before) and drove for about ... read more

Hi All OK, I have a LOT to write about, yet I don't want to waste the entire night at the computer. So... I'll try to give an abbreviated version. I left off last at Luang Prabang, which was an amazing place. The day after my last check in I took a private guided tour through the Laos 'outback'. It really is something else. I got a first hand look at how the people live over there. A family of five will live in a one room bamboo hut, if they're luckily it's on the river, and eat fish they catch from the water using spears made from a bamboo stick with a sharpened rock at the end. Unbelievable. The thing is, is that they all seem VERY happy, all smiling at you and trying to ... read more

I Resume editing am writing this blog entry on my sixth month point on this trip. Some places time goes so fast and others so slow. I've been in Laos for 19 days and it seems like a maybe week. So far this is my ultimate favorite country in SE Asia. The people are a kind of their own, very soft spoken, well-dressed, easy going and shy. It surprises me with the history of the country that the people are so kind and welcoming to foreigners, especially Americans. So.... in the 70's the US dropped over a billion bombs or something crazy in this country when they were at war with Vietnam. A lot of the bombs(I've been told) were dropped solely because the jets needed to drop them in order to have enough fuel for ... read more

Nong Kiaw is just 96 km up the river from Luang Prabang and I had heard the boat trip was stunning, so even though it takes only 3.5 hours by bus, I decided to take the boat, which I was told would take 8 hours - but turned out to be more like 10 - including a stop at a local whisky manufacturing (re tourist) village, and then later a breakdown and subsequent stop on a river bank to repair the boat. Luckily I was travelling with great people - Sarah and Russell and by coincidence another English girl who I met in Vang Vieng as well - as well as 2 Canadian guys and another Londoner. But although there was great company on the boat, and there weren't too many people on board, it did ... read more
