Nong Khai in Thailand was a typical border town really, okay to stop off and prepare to move on, but that's about it, still the guesthouse had great character, esp the proprietor, very helpfull in a madcap type way. As I had sorted my Laos visa during my week in Bangkok I got into Laos the easy and cheap way, a direct bus from Nong Khai terminal where you just hop off and get your stamp on one side of the bridge to leave Thailand, then hop back on bus, over the bridge, and you get your stamp to enter Laos, then the bus continues the 20km to Vientiane. You notice very quickly how the road condition deteriates as you drive into Laos. As the only Westerner on the bus I got some attention on arriving ... read more

I Love Laos!! The flight over to Luang Prabang clearly highlighted just how much of the land is uninhabitable (approx 95%). The rolling hills, limestone cliffs and jungle is just beautiful. The people are so friendly and the atmosphere is so relaxed. Luang Prabang is a beautiful town and it is easy to see why the whole town is world heritage listed. The french influence in the buildings is clear to see. We stayed in a guesthouse on the bank of the Mekong river and basically spent five days exploring the town and the surrounding sights. Bike Riding around town (inc Royal Palace Museum, Wats, Sunset and much more) This was soo much fun, we hired the bikes for the day and rode around town taking in all of the sites. I was Lesleys tour guide ... read more

I dunno why, but we were underwhelmed with Laos from the start. The places were all nice, the people were friendly enough and all of life's essentials were extremely affordable, so maybe it was just us. It didn't help that we were joined on the flight in by an unidentified, but persistent and irritating microbe which couldn't decide if it wanted to be a flu-causing virus or a headcold bug, so alternated between the two. Vientiane is a pocket sized capital city with a river (the Mekong – but of course), a museum and, lo, an international ATM. The museum provided a sterling shelter from the rain and included a display on the Plain of Jars, including an actual 5ft earthenware jar. Linda felt that this should be sufficient to save us the bother of actually ... read more

Laos is a very unspoilt country, this means the scenery is not ruined by high rise buildings (though you have to beware of unexploded bombs from the Americans in the 70's), it also means that the transport system is not anything like we have in the UK....for a start there are no trains!! The easiest and cheapest way to get from Luang Prabang to Vientiane (the capital of Laos) is by bus travelling down route 13, it is possible to stop about two thirds of the way down at Vang Vieng to break the journey up. Previous to our trip we had read that in 2003 attacks had taken place by armed gangs on buses travelling Route 13, these had injured many passengers and people had been killed (including westeners). The government claimed the attacks were ... read more

Had an early start today & a full day seeing Vientiane. Walked up to Pha That Luang - The most important national monument in Laos. Looked spectacular from a distance but not so grand up close, also had a look at Patuxai, it is supposed to be their equivalent of the Arc de Triumph & was built with cement given to them by the Americans for them to build a runway . Not quite the Arc de Triumph but walked up to the top & it had good views over the city. Tuk tuk ride out to the Buddha park - 30mins away & is just by the Mekong river so nice to have a walk around. The tuk tuk dropped us back of at Pha That Luang & Skip thought it would be nice to ... read more

hanging out in 'dong khong', having beer, playing badminton with locals. also rode bicycle to the end of the island down a muddy road, then halfway around the island. Hiaku for the days bike ride= bicycling dong khong rice harvesting everywhere ass hurts, back too, HOT!!! also booked transport to cambodia. we were able to negotiate a slight discount for the trip but it was too little for all of the problems. one van takes us to a point near the border. then a second takes us to the laos immigrations. after much confusion and standing around, a group of people, some were already at the border, board another van (the 3rd for those of us leaving dong khong). the bus then stops for reasons unknown to us travelers. while stopped the van stops running. not ... read more

Vientianessa on vietetty viikonloppuna (ja vissiin jo muutamana paivana ennen sita) yhta tarkeimmista festivaaleista, johon liittyi myos merkittava melontakilpailu. Festivaali juhlistaa sadekauden loppua, mika vaikuttaa kuitenkin mielestani ehka hieman ennenaikaiselta... Koko viikonlopun on satanut ja tanaankin sade jatkuu niin, etta joudumme viettamaan aikaa sisatiloissa tietokoneiden aaressa. Sateen vuoksi olemme joutuneet jopa vaihtamaan kertaalleen hotellihuonetta, ja nytkin on huoneen lattialla kunnon vesilatakko. Laosissa ei talot ole kovinkaan sateenpitavia. Kadut ovat olleet taynna myyntikojuja ja ihmisia. Todellista markkinatunnelmaa epavakaasta saasta huolimatta. Katujen varrella on myyty monenmoista rihkamaa ja kaikkea mahdollista purtavaa. Me intouduimme maistamaan uppopaistettuja toukkia. Eivat olleet mitenkaan erikoisia, mutta paastaan sentaan kehuskelemaan kavereille ... read more

Hello folks, apologies for not writing for sometime as internet availability has been sparse (read non-existant). Since our last update, we crossed the Laos border at Na Maew - Nam Xoi. We decided to cross here to avoid the 24 bus ride from hell at Lao Bao. Our attempts to arrange this journey proved more difficult than we imagined. Every travel agency quoted us extortionate prices and many were unaware the border existed. So dejected, we returned to our hostel. We were in luck. We agreed a price of $115 with the manager to take us by taxi. Next, hassle with ANZ and changing Dong into Thai Baht and USD (no ATMs in Laos!). We had to make three journeys to the bank, bringing with us more documentation each time. The dozy cashier failed to mention ... read more

the day after my boatride i must reluctantly leave my little oasis. i missed the 7am pickup by 5 minutes because i simply could not bring myself to rush away. but at 0830 i did hop on a songthaew for the ride out of town. i know there is a 1600 bus onward to 'dong khong' an island but am unsure if i should go for it in one day, thus giving me a wee bit of downtime in these islands on the mekong. after the 3 hour ride to thakek' i still haven't made up my mind and there is only a 10 minute window to decide if i should hop on the next bus to a town 'savanakhet' which is two hours further on. i finally decide to await the 4 hours for the ... read more
