After far too long a break between trips it was time to get back on a plane and hit our next adventure: Bali! This was also a good excuse to get away and celebrate both a birthday and an engagement, and this seemed to be the perfect spot... Arrived in Kuta after a good 27 hours of flying and within the hour we were at our first hotel and cracking a Bintang in the wee hours of the morning, happy to have arrived and too tired to sleep...haha...on a recommendation from K's brother we were to spend the next three nights at the absolutely idyllic Poppies Cottages on Poppies Gang 1, completely recommend it; twenty individual private cottages, all with fantastic outdoor bathrooms, beautiful grounds, a gorgeous pool and very friendly staff. After wandering around the ... read more

Bangkok and Bali Bangkok I arrived in Bangkok at 8:30. This gave me enough time to find a hotel, freshen up, and hit the town. I walked around aimlessly for a while just following the stream of shops by sukhumvit 19. There is an endless line of shops selling a wide variety of items including: sex toys, hardcore porn, illegally copied movies, Viagra, weaponry, and typical touristy crap. On the side of the street is a wide selection of prostitues in all shapes and sizes. I couldn't help but feel sorry for these women and the men who were getting their attention. After getting tired of these shops I went to an area called RCA. This is a place like Lodos in Denver or the Marina in San Francisco. It's a posh area with a series ... read more

Salam!! Welcome everybody to our travel blog! The blog is sometimes going to be written in English, sometimes in French, and then at other times in Dutch. So probably if you receive two messages at least one of them you will be able to understand! ;) So, as you may or may not know, we left last Tuesday for a trip of three months trough South-East Asia! After traveling about 33 hours, transferring in Doha and Singapore, we finally arrived in Bali!! And Sir Alex Ferguson was with us in the first plane actually. Sitting economy class (pretty cool), wearing sneakers, shorts, a 5 euro nike shirt he looked more like simple white trash than the coach of ManU! Completely broken, we arrived here but the next day we managed to find a nice laid-back "cottage" ... read more

SALAM!!!!!

Day 76 Cemorolawang to Bali (Fri 17th Sept) 0500 departure today, so again a packed breakfast. We watched the sun rise as we were leaving the resort. After a fun ride down the mountain (though a few of the group preferred not to look), we rejoined our coach and were on our way. We made it to the ferry terminal just in time to drive straight on to the 1100 ferry. The trip from Java to Bali was only about an hour long and uneventful. The water actually looked quite a lovely deep blue and made me feel like going swimming. And of course the clocks go forward another hour here, bringing us in line with Perth. Again. While on the ferry coming over, Norma turned to me and asked “so, in this part of the ... read more

Hello, This is the penultimate entry....! In my last update we'd just got back to Bali from the Gili Islands........... Thursday 9th September - The Gili's to Kuta, Bali continued The journey back into Kuta took a long time. It was interesting though as it was the last day of Ramadan and there were a lot of people on the side of the roads dressed up very colourfully with elaborate food laid out in front of them waiting for sunset so they could eat. The Bali countryside is really beautiful, lots of lush green and nice rivers. The traffic in Kuta was TERRIBLE!!! We moved about an inch a minute. We hadn't realised that a lot of Indonesians come to Bali at the end of Ramadam for Eid, there's a 5 day national holiday. This also ... read more

Hi :) Sunday 29th August - Kuta We arrived at Bali airport (where there were two men playing some sort of local xylophone to welcome us), paid $25USD for a Visa, collected our bags, made friends with Ryan and got in a taxi to Kuta, a town on Bali. It was so so busy even though it was nearly 10pm. It was an interesting driving through Kuta, the shopping looked really good, if you like shopping, lots of big name shops like Topshop and Marks & Spencers and there was a huge Hard Rock Cafe. I saw a Pizza Hut but resisted, I could have got Macdonalds, KFC and Pizza Hut in in 24 hours! We headed for Poppies Lane II (the backpacker accommodation is mostly in Poppies Lane I or Poppies Lane II) to ... read more

A small cup of Java I spent a few days in KL in a futile attempt to get a proper 60 day visa to Indonesia. August 31st was however the Malaysian independence day so the embassy closed and apparently didn't accept new visa applications the day before. The day after they threw so much red tape after me that I gave up and flew to Jakarta and got another visa on arrival in a matter of minutes. I had a day in Jakarta before Eric would join me again after his short trip to Vietnam and I tried to get some practical stuff sorted out and get a quick impression of this weird city. When travelling in Indonesia you hear a lot about how awful the bigger cities like Medan, Surabaya and Jakarta are so I ... read more

Alright, so my dad has been consistently nagging me with these little one-liner emails to update this freaking blog. Ughhhhhhh. I guess it has been a while, hasn't it? Needless to say, a lot has happened since the frightening experience with meditation. (You have to... double-up... your spirit... gag me, please.) I booked it up to Chiang Mai with a quick (read: longest drawn out two days of my life) stop in Bangkok and thought I was going to go absolutely crazy the first few days. I couldn't find a hostel with anyone under 40 or.. anyone.. at all (one place I stayed at was like a ghost hostel). FINALLY... I got a tip from Chip (that rhymes! huhyak huhyak) to stay at a place called A Little Bird. Once I found it, my luck started ... read more

Ellie: We're back in Kuta! Our flight back from Flores was at 11, and we amused ourselves before boarding by spying on two very rich and very good looking families with squillions of shiny children. I couldn't guess which child belonged to which glamourous mum but Claire worked it all out. We also listened to "I'm Sorry I havn't a Clue," laughing like morons at the gate. After we got back we sunbathed on the beach, and got a manicure, pedicure AND haircut all for the very reasonable price of 8 dollars. Sushi again for supper, and tomorrow we'll probably stay by the pool until leaving to catch our internal flight from Bali to Jakarta at 2.45. Claire: Having giggled relentlessly to I'm Sorry I haven't a clue we're now describing ourselves as Euthanasia. (Youth in ... read more
