Unfortunately, I do not have a story about actually getting bitten by reality. However, metaphorically... reality bites! I'm in a wee bit of a dilemma at the moment as I'm struggling to find solid employment in Melbourne. I've been at the job search for well over a month now and I have not found anything suitable! It's getting to the point now where if I don't find something soon, I am going to be in some real trouble. Therefore, I have been considering moving to Perth. Now, Melbourne is known as the cultural and arts capital of Australia. It's a beautiful city that has so much to offer, fantastic public transport, and some really friendly people. There is always something going on, a plethora of multicultural cuisines, and some really fantastic coffee spots (otherwise known as ... read more

Hey there everyone! Alright, once again... this is not going to be a massively exciting update. HOWEVER. I do have exciting news (although you've all probably heard about this news either through facebook, email, or my lovely parents that FORWARD MY ACCEPTANCE LETTER TO MEMBERS OF MY FAMILY). Yes, you may note the exasperation in the latter part of that sentence. Speaking of acceptance letters... I got into King's College! I'm still waiting to hear back from University College London and the London School of Economics, but regardless, I'm moving to London in September! I may actually show up a bit earlier because a) I need to find a place to live; b) I want to visit Molly in Ireland and c) I want to travel through England with Molly to visit friends, relatives, and various ... read more

Hellooooo everyone! Long time no.. blog. Anyway, I thought I'd start this bad boy up again, considering I am once again traveling.. sort of. I'm actually really just living... in a different country. However, this country is surprisingly similar to the States, so don't expect any teeth to get knocked out while trying to ford a mighty river or any life altering revelations at the peak of a Laotian mountain. My highlights thus far have been fairly mundane to the average human being. To me, however, these highlights have been AWESOME! Outstanding moments include: purchasing, moving, and constructing a bed; getting my first casual employment placement; finding a house, moving into said house (see aforementioned construction of bed), and loving my housemates; and meeting lots of fun new people. While these things may seem boring to ... read more

Everyone has always said that the first thing to hit you when the plane doors open is the smell... Then it's the heat. We had already grow accustomed to the turbans and the salwar kameez (the shirt/pant stuff the women wear) but... Why is it pleasantly mild? And where the hell is that smell? The only thing that was shocking to us was the lack of hagglers... Oh, and the RIDICULOUS air pollution! We thought maybe it was fog and then realized our eyes and throats were burning. The traffic is as expected (insane) but honestly it's kind of just like a chaotic Bangkok so far. We went down to the Main Bazaar/New Delhi Train Station area yesterday and just walked around, got some food and... parts of the Main Bazaar were honestly way quieter and ... read more

I am a terrible, terrible blogger. Full apologies. Warning: I have seven minutes before this computer charges me another dollar, so that's all the time I'm going to spend writing this blog. Anyway... where did I last leave you? I believe it was prior to our series of epic failures throughout Indonesia. Prior to our 36 hour bus/ferry journey from hell, with multiple Indonesian vomiters, more screaming babies than I have ever experienced at once, stink bugs, and no sleep whatsoever. Prior to booking flights to Australia to visit friends we met in Bali. Prior to meeting an awesome group of people that we named "The Community." Also prior to deciding to say "Screw it" to Kuala Lumpur and checking out the east coast of Australia instead. ...And I believe that brings us up to date. ... read more

Alright, so my dad has been consistently nagging me with these little one-liner emails to update this freaking blog. Ughhhhhhh. I guess it has been a while, hasn't it? Needless to say, a lot has happened since the frightening experience with meditation. (You have to... double-up... your spirit... gag me, please.) I booked it up to Chiang Mai with a quick (read: longest drawn out two days of my life) stop in Bangkok and thought I was going to go absolutely crazy the first few days. I couldn't find a hostel with anyone under 40 or.. anyone.. at all (one place I stayed at was like a ghost hostel). FINALLY... I got a tip from Chip (that rhymes! huhyak huhyak) to stay at a place called A Little Bird. Once I found it, my luck started ... read more

Sawasdee everyone! So, firstly... I tried to upload pictures at two different places in Bangkok. Neither place worked. Apologies! Secondly, if I had written this blog two days ago, it would have been very, very different. Thankfully, I took a bit to cool down prior to getting online. However, if you are Buddhist, you may get offended. Just a warning. So... I got to Suan Mokkh on the 30th and the retreat officially started on the 1st, although we were encouraged not to speak and had to turn our valuables in (i.e. music, books, etc.) when we first arrived at registration on the 31st. The accommodation was as expected: a concrete slab with a wooden pillow and a straw mat, complete with an outdoor, public showering.. hole. No big deal. Registration day went really well. I ... read more

Greetings from Suan Mokkh! Ok, so I know I made this huge deal about not having internet, but registration doesn't start until tomorrow (the silence starts tomorrow night) and I'm bored. Spent the day getting settled in, reading, taking my first legit dip-and-pour shower, and buying a flashlight. Very exciting. ANYWAY it's a way better deal to stay on the internet for an hour rather than 10 minutes, so I figured I'd continue my Laos updates. Here it gooes!! LUANG PRABANG: Alright, so we're to the point of getting accomodation. Luang Prabang was amazing. We spent the first night at the fantastic night market, which is massive and full of vendors selling everything from Lao coffee and tablecloths to purses and shirts. The next day we decided to rent bicycles and spent the day touring the ... read more

Sabaidee everyone!! Alright, so I know it's been a really long time since I've updated this thing. I apologize. It's especially unfortunate because Laos was literally the most amazing country I think I've ever been to... and now I'm going to attempt to fit it all into one blog post. Take a deep breath. This might take a while. VIENTIANE: We (Christina, Becky, Jade, and I) first got into Vientiane on the 1st of July. Our "Death Bus" (notoriously the worst bus in SE Asia from Hanoi to VT) was actually amazing, and we all had a really great night's sleep. There isn't much to do in the capital city of Laos, but we ended up staying here for 3 days. We found an amazing night market - there is one by the riverside which is ... read more

Asia » Vietnam July 2nd 2010

Alright. So. Feeling refreshed after walking around the city a bit and paying a visit to the U.S. embassy for more passport pages (a surprisingly easy endeavor.. not to mention it was free), I'm ready to attempt to put into words the reason why Vietnam is so... strange. Vietnam can best be summed up in a trip we took to a cave during our Halong Bay tour. Firstly, this cave is attempting to be nominated for one of the world's 7 natural wonders. Just keep that in mind. We get off the boat and start walking towards the steps that lead up to the cave (which are very well manicured and.. well.. fake - as in not natural at all) and we hear music similar to something one would listen to at Disneyland. ...There were literally ... read more
