06/02/2011 - 10/02/2011 Final country on the list was Indonesia. I took a flight from Bangkok to Den Pasar, Bali. Although some people already warned me about Kuta, it was close to the airport and I decided to check it out... however after spending 10 minutes there, swetting my ass off and being ripped off by the taxidriver, I already had the intention to pick up my bag and go somewhere else. I stopped at some dodgy tourism information centre; the guy from the place, Nyoman, wans't able to provide any useful information, however he seemed very nice. He invited me for lunch at the back where we discussed my plans for Bali. In the we decided we (Nyoman, his friend and me) would rent a car and drive up to the east, see the rice ... read more

I don't know how people let themselves get so sunburned but the dirty streets and alleys of Kuta Beach are lined with throngs of bipedal lobsters. The funny part about popular destinations is all the presuppositions that surround them. Thanks to movies like eat pray love and others, before even stepping foot on the island people have many strong opinions about Bali. The unfortunate side of this is folks tend to spend most of their time trying to fulfill outlandish fantasies instead of interacting with their environment in a more meaningful way. Bali is truly wonderful.. don't get me wrong, but there is an unsavory air to the mentality and actions of most people who come here. To escape this we hopped on a boat to the nearby-but-also-part-of-Bali Lembongan Island. It is touted as the Bali ... read more

Having left Lizzie at Bangkok, I flew to Bali to meet my friend Milla. Milla lives in Beijing and, leading the jet set life that she does, agreed to come and meet me somewhere on my travels. Her prerequisite was that it was somewhere hot (fine by me). We decided on Bali. I think both of us thought Bali was a lot closer to the rest of Asia than it actually is – turns out it's practically in Australia! But, undeterred by slightly longer than anticipated journeys, we decided to stick to our guns and go for Bali. After managing to convince the hotel owner that I actually did have a friend arriving later (and that I wasn’t just a delusional lonely person), he let me check into a twin room, which Milla managed to locate ... read more

This blog is written in Bali, where we started our Indonesian adventure and where it will shortly end...sooner than intended. Im currently sitting in the porch of our guest house as it hammers down with rain and the sky claps with powerful thunder it sounds as if the sky is going to fall in...in the last hour it has been raining so heavily,a deep river has appeared outside our room and the surrounding area and we are pondering about wading our way out to find food in the dark as soon,im pretty sure the storm is going to cut the electric. Our stay in Indonesia as been bitter-sweet. We arrived on the 12th of January into Kuta, Bali. The first thing to strike us was the intense humidity. It was SO hot it was often difficult ... read more

27th January 2011 It was an early morning plane that I took on that very day. I believe it departs around 10 in the morning. I was so excited since I last board a plane more than 15 years ago. hahaha.. I felt a bit nervous too as I always do when I'm on board but all went well. I was lucky that I got to sit at the window and after like 2hours after departing from Kuala Lumpur I saw a very weird clouds. It was a very thick orange-brown colored clouds and it turns out that it wasn't a cloud at all. It was the ashes from a live bursting volcano eruption, Tengger Caldera in east Java. Most of the plane that depart later than us had to cancel their flight. So I was ... read more

8th December 2010 We awoke at about 9am which wasn’t too bad considering the late night that we had. We were both a little dry of mouth from the drinks the night before but it was a beautiful Bali morning and we had things to do. We headed out into the heat and blazing sun, without a thought for anything but breakfast, which we located a little way up the main street to the North. A “farmer’s breakfast” for each of us (the re-fried boiled potatoes with bacon and eggs mixed in brekkie I had had in Langkawi). That done, we both felt a little more human and were really glad to note we had arrived in yet another place where there was a ceremony taking place that meant half the place was shut. We ... read more

Many things about these two days were great but they are also two days where quite a few things went wrong. 6 December 2010 Today is our last full day in Singapore as tomorrow afternoon we fly to Bali. The plan was to visit the Botanic Gardens and the Orchid Gardens and to visit the harbour. If we had time, we might pop over to Sentosa island as there is a flowrider (surf) machine that Gregg would have rather liked to have a look at. We didn’t set an alarm, deciding that we deserve to let our bodies and the sun, rather than electronics, tell us when it was time to rise. Our room has a very narrow window that runs almost from floor to ceiling and, in the absence of a curtain, we were gently ... read more

First impressions of Kuta Beach, Bali? The place is packed with young Aussies running amok in this hedonistic destination! I landed at the Denpasar airport at 2350 hours on Tuesday, November 23rd and it took over an hour to travel the 5 kilometres to the Aquarius Star Hotel on the main party strip, Jalan Legian! There are constant traffic jams from the proliferation of cars, taxis, mini-vans, and motorcycles plying the narrow streets dodging hoards of tourists. I hadn't realized that I was so close to Ground Zero from the 2002 Bali bombings and a memorial wall created just down the street from my hotel. After checking in I decided to explore the local entertainment, having beers in the recommended bars down the street. First stop was the MiniBar just as the local band was wrapping ... read more

I’m a little undecided between Singapore and NZ Airlines, on the one hand Singapore Airlines do give you a lovely little silk pillow, a wash bag and a menu (which I think you have to be in business class of NZ to receive) but then NZ have never made me stand in a queue for 1hour and 40mins to check in. That was a long queue, which moved all of about 2m in the first 40mins as they had decided to only open one check in desk in an attempt to point out that you can check in online. Yes you can check in online, but for those of us travelling nomads and the 50 or so families apparently moving to Asia (I don’t know where they stowed all the luggage) it would still be nice ... read more
