Our first time on an indian train. well we made it! In a three tier A/C compartment. After many questions at the information desk i finally worked out the train would come at 10am on platform 2 and we should get into carriage B1 or B2. well the train finally came at 10:25 and an announcement was made. It made no reference to Varkala but we got on anyway (having asked 2 people) and being pretty sure it was ours. we made our way to the carriage and found a seat, only to be kicked out of it by a chancer saying he had booked it. Because we didn't move fast enough he went anyway but a nice family said we could sit with them so we did. Things to remember about train trips:- * Book ... read more

Hello blog readers, I'm absolutely gutted because I did an amazing blog 2 days ago in Goa and just as I clicked publish I got onto a screen saying I'd logged out and the blog hadn't been published. Laura doesn't want me to sit re-writing another blog (because she gets bored sat here watching me read it - I told her to go out into the night and try and get mugged - she didn't find it funny but I know my Dad would have told me to do the same thing). Anyways, I guess we'll just have to tell you about our days last couple of days in Goa for another time. Needless to say, we hired a scooter (hope you were sitting down Mum), parked outside a police station without a license or helmet, ... read more

Heyhey, well... went to a pretty little beach close by today called Varkala. It is about 40km north of Trivandrum and was exactly what I needed, tranquil and sunny. The sea was too rough to be swimming in though. there were coconut trees all along the cliff edge, we went to this beach that we call cow beach (becasue there were cows on it), and had a little paddle but the undercurrents were too strong. I also found out that I am rubbish at frisbee. And finally had my first day working in a hospital. It was good. The hospital is so modern and so much better equipped than anything in Cambodia. For the first day went to casulty for the morning and then there wasnt really much going on so I went into surgery for ... read more

After a little flight confusion (and leveraging my Marriott points from the work-days of yesteryear for a night at the cushy JW Marriott Bangkok) we made it to Bangalore a week early. We met a really nice couple from California who live just north of the city. They helped us get in from the airport and showed us a nice hotel; and as our flight didn’t get in until after 1 a.m., the help was much appreciated. They got us on the right foot the next morning with a great Indian breakfast, introduced us to some great people, and showed us the (few) sights to see in Bangalore. It was a fantastic way to begin the next (sub) continent of our trip; I’ll consider it good foreshadowing. Bangalore doesn’t have much in the way of tourist ... read more

Dreaming of an adventure like ours? Find out how we did it at ... read more
En route pour Varkala, nous nous sommes retrouvés coincés comme des sardines à l'arrière d'un bus local pendant trois heures. La joie de voyager avec un budget serré !

We have arrived at the cliff side hippy/backpacker hideaway known as Varkala. All of the shops, bars and accommodation line the edge of the cliffs surrounding a secluded beach. There is more Bob Marley bars than you can poke a stick at and every step you take along the cliff edge is followed by the words "hashish, hashish" fading into the distance. Most of the locals wonder around stoned, mixed in with a very chilled out vibe and dreadlock type travelers swinging in hammocks hanging from coconut trees. If it wasn’t for the events of last night I would say this is probably the best beach resort we have seen in India, but to be honest the beaches in India are not all that and we didn’t come to India to find beach resorts. Last night ... read more

next we had a 10 hour drive to varkla via cape comerin which the very tip of india, id rerally looked forward to this, the ability to look at a map of the world point to the tip and say ive stood there. as usual these things are a bit of a dissapointment, you imagine being stood on a rock face looking over the horn or being alone on a desterted beach facing the swirling ocean. what you get is lots of tacky shops, as its a tourist destination for the indians. im probably being a little harsh as there is a cool temple on the very furthest point and an enormous statue of the coast. i have some pretty cool photos of this, i just cant figure out how to upload photos on to this ... read more

Today we woke and went to our usual breakfast spot, serving decent coffee for Dale and a great breakfast for Mark and I. The sun was shining in the morning and we were not brave enough to venture out, still feeling distinctly burnt from the other day! The clouds soon rolled in though allowing Mark and Dale to head to the beach and Ollie to finish off a book. The rest of the afternoon was spent indoors watching the remarkable rains as it pounded the cliffs! The storm knocked out the power so much of the evening was spent in darkness but we found a restaurant and ate another fantastic meal and then spent the rest of the evening playing cards with one of the waiters who claimed to know how to play the game we ... read more

Late breakfast today, followed by staying in the shade, was necessary! Luckily it started to rain early in the afternoon so we headed down to the strangely deserted beach and threw a ball around for a few hours. Mark enjoyed the rain a little too much and had to be dragged away for dinner. We stuffed ourselves with a huge swordfish curry which was excellent and then retired. Another relaxing day!... read more
