AFter an eventful night, Dale was absolutely convinced he had seen a massive great spider just wandering up the bed!, we headed out for breakfast and the beach. After a litle while in the sun we went to seek some shade and had some lunch. This was the moment we realised just how burnt we all were. Oops!! On closer inspection of the factor 50 sunscreen we had all slathered on religously we noticed some odd spellings on the back of the bottle and slowly came to realise that it was not sunscreen but a milky concoction of something else, masquerading as sunscreen! Cue an afternoon of sulking in the shade and watching the pink skin turn ever darker shades of red! That evening we waited till the very last of the sun had faded from ... read more

After another hearty breakfast we headed to the Kollam train station as we had been assured that there would be a 11.30am train to Varkala, our next stop. The ticket desk told us the next train was actually 1.15 pm but no worries there, getting used to waiting for things to happen. We just found a bar and settled in for the wait! The train journey was eneventful and on arrival in Varkala we headed to the beach to find somewhere to stay. We instantly found a great little cottage for a pittance and moved in/dumped our stuff on the floor! WE then headed for the beach to see what was going on and to get some lunch. We then spent the afternoon/evening on the beach as the sun went down and then had a little ... read more

I've spent 3 nights here.. and I could stay longer.. Its more touristy, western, and catered to tourists if anything.. but its still a peaceful hidden city... I hear Kovalam is over-saturated with tourits and expensive hotels.. this hotel here is costing me about 14$ a night, and 12$ for last night ( i talked him down ).. im about to check out and board the train to Trivandrum.. a big city.. I will stay there a night.. i'd say about 1/3 the people here are from Tibet.. some came 10 years ago.. some 30.. some more.. The people here have been absolutely the friendliest bunch I have met.. the travelers as well as the natives.. There is not one person you miss saying good morning, good afternoon, hello too.. and they remember you.. and it ... read more

The Paradox of Our Age by The Dalai Lama We have bigger houses but smaller families; More conveniences, but less time; We have more degrees, but less sense; More knowledge, but less judgment; More experts, but more problems; More medicines, but less healthiness; We've been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet the new neighbor. We build more computers to hold more information to produce more copies than ever but have less communication. We have become long on quantity, but short on quality. These are times of fast foods but slow digestion; Tall man but short character; Steep profits but shallow relationships. It's a time when there is much in the window, but nothing in the room. I was up before sunrise by the sounds of ... read more

Im here in Varkala.. gorgeous beach, definately inhabited by tourists, families, couples, backpackers, and catered to tourists.. i like it tho, its peaceful. its the first place where im pretty content in being here. Next to backpackers traveling alone... I am envious of the young couples traveling together. That has been added to the ultimate must for male prospects.. A man I can have fun in the city with.. and loves backpacking around the world with me.. one that will try any kind of food.. along with lists of others, but those are the 2 must before we can proceed.. Same with friends, if you can travel with a friend around the world, you can do anything with them. I pretty much am able to blend in with the natives here with my burnt/tanned skin.. I ... read more

It was a 1.5 hour flight from Bangalore to Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum) on Kingfisher Airlines. The same company that owns the major beer company. I'm sick of cities by now, so I headed straight for the beach called Kovalum. It was late and in the middle of the night and my hotel was in the middle of a dark palm tree forest. I wandered through the maze of trails before finally running into a young man who asked how he could help me. He brought me straight there insisting on carrying my bags. I tipped him 10 rupees and checked into my basic but spacious hotel for 300 rupees. ($8.00) I asked the hotel owner where I could find a bank machine. It's about 3 km away so she said pay later and then gave me some ... read more

... und in Suedindien uebrigens auch nicht, jedenfalls fast nicht. Deshalb lassen wir uns berauschen von Volksgesaengen, Sonne und Tee, Tee, Tee (mit Schuss natuerlich). Folks, thanks for tuning in, we're happy to deliver the hottest news directly from paradise. We're fed up with hanging around in trains, busses, on motorbikes ... so we decided to crash into the finest place on earth, called Varkala. While Irina is pursuing her passions all day long (washing, working on the fields, cooking, bargaining with the local dealers ...), I finally found some time to relax and play the guitar. Seriously looking for some sparring & jam partners for my daily gym & music sessions. Irina werdet ihr bald in traditionellen Trachten und Gewaendern bewundern duerfen, sie haelt sich immer haeufiger in Krishna-Osho Kreisen auf, zusammen mit anderen depressiven ... read more

I am sat here by the pool in the middle of Sri Lanka - we did say a few words in an earlier blog about Kerala - but here’s the full low-down. I’ll give you a breakdown of each of the places we went but first it’s worthwhile covering a few points. Kerala is different - the roads are good and there are road markings and even zebra crossings. Everything is organised and the people are straightforward. It is easily the most overall advanced part of India that we have been to. The prices are very low and the quality and variety of food is first class. Of all the areas we have been to it is a place we could live for a significant part of the year. The countryside is varied eg backwaters; rural ... read more

Varkala We left Kovallam by taxi and arrived up the coast at Varkala 1.5 hours later all for the same price as a Wellington to Johnsonville ride - NZ$40! I could say the trains were fully booked but that would be a lie. I was amazed during our ride how many fabulous houses there were, great big brick houses with fancy iron gates and concrete columns. Certainly different living standards than we have seen so far. Varkala is similar to Kovallam in that it has a walkway lined with hotels, shops and restaurants. When I say hotels don’t imagine western type hotels, they are lucky to be more than 1 story high, more like motels or guest houses. Anyway on the other side of the walkway is the beach but it is like down the bottom ... read more
