Hi again We arrived in Varkala yesterfay afternoon, and just like Sri Lanka it looks awesome. There's an excellent view from the long cliff along the sea, with some steps down to the beach. There are shops, restraunts and bars all along the cliff top, as well as guest houses and hotels. We're staying in Bamboo village, in 2 very comfortable bamboo huts, which are clean and have proper toilets and showers and large beds, even if the rooms are a bit small. They're cheaper than the hotle we used in Trivandrum where Nicole and Eileen were attacked by bedbugs. I'll take some photos of everything, but for now I've put up some photos from Sri Lanka and Eileen's birthday last night. For Eileen's birthday it was decided to use Nicole's eye liner to draw moustaches ... read more

The Route So Far Sally Evers & Nick Griffith We are back on the road again, and this time for our last trip before we get back to the real world :) For those of you who don't know (or care) we are in India for the next 3 months to soak up the sun, temples and smells! We started in Chennai just over a week ago, which is on the East Coast. We got off the plane to the smell of curries which we thought was quite funny. It was pretty smelly and hot but a good introduction to India, we spent a couple of days there because there was a government strike on our second day which meant all shops and flights into Chennai were closed / cancelled - it was a bit surreal ... read more

Last night in Varkala we had the best thunder and lightening storm ever. It lasted for hours with big bolts of lightening and loud cracks of thunder and a very refreshing heavy downpour of rain! For the first time in 3 weeks I have felt cool. Hooray! It has been sweltering hot around 38-40 degrees with the evenings cooling to about 33, Humidity is high as we are right next to the water. So why have we stayed so long you may ask? Well the beach has been a blast with many afternoons spent bodysurfing. It is a very relaxed atmosphere where one can just kick back. Varkala is a definite European getaway spot and we have met people from all over the world. Yesterday we went to visit the local temple which is in ... read more

After deciding there was not much to see in Kollam, I headed down south to a little beachside community known as Varkala. The trip down was my first introduction to the crazy world of Indian buses, though this trip was quite pleasant compared to later ones. The direct buses are never as frequent as a guide book will have you believe, but after gambling on a changeover in a strange town I'd never heard of, I managed to arrive safely. Once there, I found it very hard to leave. In stark contrast to the dirty, noisy and odorous towns i had been visiting up until now, Varkala (well the tourist part anyway) was a rather pleasant little cliff top community overlooking a nice little beach. The cliff top itself was lined with an endless assortment ... read more

Today we arrived in Varkala by train from Kanyakumari and it was very scenic winding through the countryside and small villages. I went cheap(66 Rupees- $2Can) since it was a short trip only 4hrs and went with the locals which at times was a little squishy. I still had a good time though. It was fun at each stop how the vendors came aboard and sold food and snacks and hot drinks which were very tasty. The bananas are delicious. If your traveling I highly recommend trying the train at least once. So we arrived in Varkala and are set up in this great little place with a view of the water and a short walk to the beach for only 300 Rupees($10 Can) we have yoga classes out our door and massage a stones throw ... read more

OK OK OK! Jeez! It's been over a week since our last entry and we are hearing about it from everyone! So alright already, here it you go. We finished off last time having partied the night away in Goa. Had we already gone back to Arambol for the weekend? Ok, well we did do that, having worn out the things to do in Panjim and bought a train ticket for the following Monday. Back in Aramol we got up to our usual, you know, laying on the beach, reading books, eating......yeah that about it. We also found a lovely little shop near the top of the road and upstairs, full of interestingly designed clothes, and not the usual street vendor tourist fare. We spent the afternoon chatting with the owner Sudeep, from Nepal, drank chai, ... read more

Okay, there's 4 months to go, but following on from a conversation I was having with Ellie before I left the UK, I cant help but wonder what on earth I'll get up to on my birthday. I dont even know what country I'll be in! But given that most people get to spend their 30th partying with their friends, and that that won't be entirely possible for me, has anyone got any other suggestions? I think I want to do something quite new to me, try something new maybe, trek somewhere special, or maybe just get drunk somewhere new! I dont know, but I'm tempted to take any suggestions you make - regardless of if I know you or not - and draw them out of a hat. But then if noone makes any suggestions, ... read more
