'Arguably the state's most idyllic beach' according to the Lonely Planet. Well would you care to show me where this beach is then, Lonely Planet? No? Well that's 'cos there isn't one between the months of July and November! Failed to mention that in your fancy guide book didn't you?! Lack of a beach aside(and ignoring the incessant bongo drum sellers), Varkala is a fantastic little seaside resort built mostly on a dramatic cliff top overlooking the Arabian sea and (when it's there) Papadashum Beach. During and in the months following the monsoon the sea swell manages to engulf most of the beach. It's actually a little unfair to say that there has been no beach at all. At the north end of the cliffs there is a Black Beach, a compact and bijou little number, ... read more

Can't believe...just lost the whole entry...with a view that it was probably too long anyway, here's the brief version. Went to Varkala to hang out on the beach for a few days...met some people who had been to Sri Sivananda's Yoga ashram and knew a lady I had met at Amma's who had also recommended I go. With the decision to go made...I finally gave in and bought some fisherman pants to do me Yoga in. bumped into the couple from Hull again, got a lift from a british guy on the back of his enfield to the train station, wicked journey. Got to Ashram, met some wicked people...the bloke called Vera, was a star, his wife worked at the ashram...he showed me all was not a pure at the ashram as you might have been ... read more

Hi Everyone, Well here we are again, wrestling with yet another emotionally challenged Indian computer - in a way, it is good to know that even machines each have their own little quirks and unpredictability. Having sat in Alleppy bored out of our brains for a couple of days and unable to make any friends who would be prepared to be stuck on a boat with us for 24 hours (I know, I know, it IS hard to believe - even the couple we asked who were on their honeymoon couldn't see the extent to which we would have enhanced their post wedding blissful boat ride), we decided to give up and head to Kollam, the other backwater hub town. We got an 8 hour tourist cruise, despite the Lonely Planet's tantalising description of it, where ... read more

Hello my lovely people, We left Alleppy for Kollam on a rather jam-packed boat but never-the-less enjoyed the eight hour journey along the backwaters to Kollam. The scenery is beautiful with coconut palms, bananna trees and other exotic foliage lining the waterways. The weather here is also beautiful with hours of golden sunlight to enjoy the scenery in. On the way we stopped at an Ashram to pick up a couple of passangers, which amuzed me greatly as these two young twenty year olds lived up to the stereotype of ashram visitors as they wafted onto the boat in lots of flowing material and a look of peace and spirituality accompanying their beards. Well, his beard at least. they had very much enjoyed their three days at the ashram, I over heard, and had been lucky ... read more

I didn't get a great night's sleep, due to there being no happy medium temperature available between the excessive stickiness of the air and the cold if I put the fan on - even with the soothing sounds of the surf rumbling in the background. A stroll along the beach at sunrise seemed like a good way of getting something useful out of the proceedings, so 6AM found me on the sand with an assortment of early-morning joggers, swimmers, laughing yoga practitioners, and fighting dogs. I stuck a toe in the water and was surprised to discover that the Arabian Sea and the North Sea have more in common than people perhaps realise, i.e. you don't want to swim in either of them early in the morning. Even with the beach relatively empty, it didn't really ... read more

To cap off our India visit, we arrived at Varkala for our stay of nine nights. If we could redo our itinerary (which is always easy in hindsight), we would have made an additional stop at one or two other locations (Hampi probably). Since Varkala is a more touristy beach scene (like Goa), we didn't need so much time...but don't worry, we were still happy with our slow days spent on the beach, in the cafes or on our porch's hammock. No complaints from us. Varkala is not quite like Goa as the hotels and restaurants sit on a cliff and not directly on the beach. But like Goa, the restaurants are very touristy and overpriced - it is hard to find good (cheap) Indian meals here (we took the bus on three separate days into ... read more

I was hoping to catch the sunrise today but unfortunately it was so cloudy on the horizon that I was unsuccessful. After checking out, I had some time to kill before heading to the station, so I sat outside and watched Kanyakumari life unfold. This included a taxi that played "Silent Night" when it was reversing. The train journey to Varkala was only about 3 hours. This seaside village had been added to my agenda only recently, when I had scrapped the idea of a multi-day backwater cruise further north in Kerala, deciding that 1 day would probably be enough for that. This freed up a couple of days in the schedule and, though beach holidays really aren't my thing, I thought I should probably see what an Indian seaside resort was like. Most people would ... read more

In this region of India people are sharp on not drinking alcohol. You may not drink in public places' only at the varanda of your hotel perhaps. we had our breakfast at "Chineese Dishes" in the town very near to the boat jetty and transferred to the boat to Kollam. It took 8 hrs. and we paid 300 inR /person excluding lunch and tea stop. that boat trip by itself a totally backwater one. You watch the Kerala way of living by the water side. The nature, people and their believes make this land " God's Own Country". After KollamWe shared a taxi with a couple to Varkala. The pictures may make you feel jealous, those friends who are strugling with minus degrees' we hope to worm them by our report. We are planning to go ... read more

Well after waiting eagerly, my folks finally arrived in Delhi and to help ease them in to the vagaries of India I had booked us all into a fancy 5 star hotel (against our wishes of course!). It was a tough life cocktails by the pool, air conditioning and a bath...ahhh! Next up was helping my dad celebrate his 60th birthday, so we had the best curry and Kingfisher beers we could find (plus a cake of course!). We soon left our Delhi bellies behind and headed to Amritsar the place of the Golden Temple which was well.... very gold, rather cold and to top it off we had to don fetching orange mini-turbans! It had been my dad's dream to come here and luckily it was worth the trip especially seeing the 30,000 person a ... read more
