Tom speaking: Relieved to arrive in Varkala for a bit of beach-side chillout, we got a cute beach hut at the end of the cliffs. No Ac, just ceiling fan but to be honest it's cool enough at night right now not to need it. Headed out to get some nice seafood after craving it after a week of thalis, curry, etc. Most of the places have fish out on the slab, but a conspicuous lack of ice, and conspicuous gathering of flies. So we found one that did have ice, and selected a big snapper to share. It was delicious, but Bry's tummy was a bit uneasy afterwards (we blamed it on the local gin). So, 6 hours later and Bry is blowing both ends in the bathroom. 6 hours after this, I joined her. ... read more

Good bye Sri Lanka and (finally) hello India. Yep I'm here! With such a short world wind tour of S.L. (which is obviously far to short) i was really looking forward to finally getting to India, no set pace, place or idea....just taking it as it comes. The port of arrival for India was at the southern end of India, a smallish town called Trivandrum. Now I was expecting to be confronted with the works; heat, people, poverty, smells, pollution, poo, you name it. It turns out I am just easying myself into India, as this is not India and not what i expected. The state I am in is called Kelala and is know for it's gentle and relaxed side, being the beaches, lagoons, lakes and canals of Indian lifestyle. The arrival here stunned me, ... read more

So we are still in Varkala at Kerela Bamboo House huts. Been spending most days on the beach and the evenings in Funky Bar as that is the only place that stays open until last person leaves. Last night we was a late one again as we got back at 5 am after 6 cocktails and two Kingfishers. Felt quite rough this morning. Emelie did not even make it down to the beach. This place is also the best place to meet people. Met som Aussies last night that may share a boat with us on the backwaters before we head up to Goa. We will be leaving Varkal on the 7th taking the train up to Allepey for the houseboats on the backwaters. Not looking forward to pack my backpack again as I have bought ... read more

Flew in to Trivandrum on the 28th of Nov. Quaint little airport just next to the sea and the beach. From there we got a cab to Varkala where we are staying at the moment. Cab journey in itself was an adventure. Never been so scared in my whole life as he was overtaking lorries in cornes with meeting cars so we were 3 cars side by side as once he had started to overtake he failed to accelerate to overtake the lorry. He seemed to expect the lorry to slow down rather than him speeding up. I could feel my right foot hitting the floor in the car everytime he was about to overtake. Thank god we got here safe. We are staying at a place on a cliff with the beach 5 mins below. ... read more

Wanting to ditch Trivandum as soon as we could, we caught a super early bus up to Varkala hoping to hit the beach asap (Apparently Jane had been doing lots of this in Goa but it was always 'tan o'clock for her!'). We arrived in to the idylic clifftop Varkala around 9am and it was definitely worth the early start. Straight away we met loads of people who seemed to be pretty confused as to how long they'd been in Varkala and after spending only a day there we could all see why. The sun, sand, waves, western dress rules, fresh fish, yoga and sweet juicey pineapples we're an amazing way to pass endless days, and it was very hard for us to keep our stay limited to only 3 nights! Apart from eating fresh fish ... read more

Up early Saturday and caught the 8.05 train out of Alleppey for the two hour run to Kollam. Dozing happily, Bruce Springsteen was riding the range with his Blood Brothers in my earphones, when a prod jerked me out of my reverie. “Hello hello, what is your good name please and where are you coming from?” Mr S Lachhman Sinh Brar, I subsequently learned, was a teacher from the Punjab and he was on a Sunday train journey to Trivandrum with a group of his students. He introduced them all one by one, boys and girls (the girls were too shy to be photographed) all14-15 years old. He lamented the fact that jobs in India were hard to come by for his students unless they progressed well and managed to secure a good degree in the ... read more

Day One 7:00am: Open my eyes and I sleepily reach for my book and read a few pages in bed while I wait for Jarrod to wake up. 8:30am: Go for breakfast. Order muesli with curd (yoghurt) and fruit. And a freshly squeezed orange juice. Read newspaper, do Suduko. Breakfast arrives and I’m only half finished suduko. On the backside of the Suduko is a sports article - who reads the sports section anyways? I can take it. I secretively tear out the Suduko so I can finish it later. Aahhh, I’m enjoying each bite of breakfast as I watch the fisherman on the horizon standing on their log boats hauling in the catch. I’m barely finished breakfast yet my mind is already wandering to dinner. Hhhmmm, I wonder what fish I’ll have tonight: red snapper? ... read more

As I write this, we are spending our last night in India. We are due to fly to Sri Lanka at 9:45 tomorrow morning. It just doesn't seem possible that over 6 weeks have passed since left from heathrow to arrive here. We've spent the last week in Varkala, a beautiful and quiet beach with a number of hotels, bars and shops set along a cliff top. The place is so relaxing and so clean as well. A really nice place for us to bring to a close our trip around India. Yet again, we found an incredibly cheap hotel (the only thing we've paid less for is the bamboo hut), it looks brand new, bright and clean, a balcony and most importantly - hot water! It felt so good jumping in a warm shower for ... read more
