Our first destination in the south was Varkala, a very small beach community off the Arabian Sea. We landed in Trivandrum, and met a very nice French couple who we would share a taxi for the 45 minute journey. We arrived at the resort, Bohemian Masala, a pricey place, for Indian standards, but worth every rupee. It is a beautiful "tribal art village" as they call it, 2 minute walking distance to the cliffs and beach. We had the pleasure of staying in an all-natural clay hut, our walls made of clay, ceilings of palm leaves, and our floors of fresh cow dung. So comfortable that we slept till noon the next day and woke feeling refreshed. When we awoke, it was Valentines day, a perfect day to lounge on the beach, shop (more Sarah than ... read more

A Happy New Year to all our readers! Thank you for all your news and feedback and those who've donated so generously to our cause.... only kidding! We two are one again, Penny having flown back to England from Islamabad for the birth of Rose's baby, Cissy, while John headed on to India. On Boxing Day, after three weeks in Gokarna, he caught the early morning 'local' bus to Hampi, a boneshaker full of locals all with their various sacks of wares and food etc.. Although it took nine hours, it was a pleasant and sometimes delightful ride through rural India. At first, it went through jungle (Indian word) then climbed into the Western Ghats. Rich red soil, which gradually became more cultivated as the jungle faded into flat plain when coconut and banana groves took ... read more

So from Wyanad to Ooty we had to endure 8 consecutive local buses in one day. Each one was more crowded than the last and the journey took over 13 hrs. Pam was great company and was in such good form that day, never complaining once while i only paused from my chirpy whistling to ask the man beside me to take his snoring, dribbling head off my fucking shoulder.....Please. The idea was to get to a town called Mattapalyam five hours away from Ooty, our Goal. Then, to get up the next day at 5am to catch the Toy Train up the mountain to Ooty. In typical form and true to our character at this stage, we didn't realise the direction we were traveling from and therefore ended up driving through Ooty and then all ... read more

Oh I love Varkala! Got here for some necessary beach time. What an amazing place. The restaurants and hotels line the cliff that looks down upon the beautiful beach. The water was clearer than Goa and the waves were coming in all day. Spent at least 3 hrs a day full on bodysurfing. Met up with a couple more travelers and had daily competitions to see who could go the furthest on one wave. We become so good that people started to flock to us to see why we were able to go so far and they not. Ended up taking out a few stupid people who just had to stand in front of us! Nightly seafood and beers after the sun went down. We were wel behaved though, as were up for 8 a.m. coffee, ... read more

January 11th - 15th - ABD A multinational convoy of three Jeeps packed to the roof with luggage and people made their way further South to Varkala on the morning of the 11th. We had enjoyed a champagne brunch at the Coir village before boarding our transport and heading into a new adventure. We arrived at the very disappointing Seapearl Chalets, and crammed ourselves into a small chalet in pairs. Tim was feeling crook and I was still recovering from the “Delhi Belly”. Varkala Beach is surrounded by cliffs and is nowhere near as lovely as the Goan Beaches. On top of these cliffs there is a long shopping and restaurant street which is mainly run by the Tibetan community. Most of us enjoyed shopping more than beaching and the days flew by. On the second ... read more

Excited to be travelling by bus again (ha!), Stacey and Ross and ourselves boarded the public non air-con bus to take us further south in Kerala to Varkala - well Kallum Ballam to be exact. The conductor was a little to eager to help us get off the bus and we ended up standing for the last 20 minutes of the journey. Of course there was the obligatory scrum to get into our seats...we really hate it when this happens, people don’t even give you a chance to get out of your seat and they are literally climbing on top of you in their desperation to bag your seat. So we finally get off the bus and got an autorickshaw to Papanasam beach - or better known as Varkala cliff top. After some serious haggling, several ... read more

Happy New Year. My 2008 ended with a complete herb ally induced sneeze fest. Let me retrace the steps. This may get a bit gross. Don't read this while eating. When we were with Dr Manoj at the Auyrvedic (sp) hospital booking in our second massage, he noticed that I was sniffling a bit. I told him about my recurrent sinus problems and that being here eating wheat and dairy (unavoidable in this place) and being rolled around in the spin cycle of waves inhaling shovelfuls of sand, was not doing me much good on the "ole bunged up head feeling". He suggested that before the massage I have a small face and head massage and "some little drops" for my sinus. Sounded good and off I trotted - certain in the knowledge that I would ... read more

Christmas Day dawned on a picture perfect calm sea with the dolphins making a festive return visit. We had spent all day Christmas eve on the beach and decided that it would be good to have a rotating "day on beach and day off beach" - to try to see some stuff round about, catch up on emails, book onward accommodation and to save on the old sun damage. Even though we spend all beach days until about 4pm under the shade it is still searing hot and you almost feel your legs sizzling when you go for a swim to cool off. The sea currents are changing the coastline and shaping the beaches around where we are staying. On Christmas eve there were six pepole on our long strip of sand. It was lovely. On ... read more
