Our next stop was the town of Madurai. We ended up in one of the more expensive hotels in town for a bit of a treat plus it was also a little hard finding a place with availability. Madurai is a fairly large place with a lot to do so we decided to stop here for a couple of nights. We went for a walk around town the first evening looking for the Meenakshi-Sundareswar Temple grounds and gave up. When we woke up in the morning we realised we had been standing pretty much in front of it. We have no idea how we missed it considering the size of it! Anyway we took a walk around the temple we had come to see. It is a massive and ancient complex with detailed carvings every where ... read more

How quickly the rest of the trip has passed....I come home in 1 week!! Before this blog turns into another short novel, I want to tell you about a unique experience I was fortunate enough to have in Mumbai. It started one innocent night in Nepal, having dinner with Juka, a fellow traveler. She told me she made a contact with an NGO in Mumbai, called CORP, that helps the poorest people living in the Dharavi slum, which is the biggest in all of Asia, home over to 1 million people. Her plan was on raise whatever money she could from her friends and family back home and bring a Christmas meal to families in the slum that should cost about $1 per family. I immediately decided to help and sent out my own emails (which ... read more

After Dom and I parted company on a super-fast bus on route to Trivandrum I made my way to Varkala - a sunny beach town about an hour north of Trivandrum. Its full of western travelers drinking cocktails and wearing tie dye but its got a ocean and a nice sandy beach to lie on for a few days. A welcome break after some hard travel in India in the commotion of curry and chaos. So i donned the suntan lotion and hit the shores. A lot of like minded travellers chilling, reading, doing yoga and this very funky type of acro-yoga on the beach at sunset. First night I hooked up with some people I had bumped into a few times on route - they live in Melbourne and we got along famously. I was ... read more

BEACH BEACH BEACH BEACH! Finally the wait for sand, sea and sunshine is well and truly over! After a long old haul down from Kolkata... long taxi ride stuck in traffic to airport, 3.5 hr flight (felt so good to be up in the air) 2hr bus journey into Bangalore, 10min Rickshaw ride when we realised we needed to get to train station and couldn't waste time in the city, 18 hour train journey (one of the best so far) and then we were in Kerela! Woohoo.... although our first stop, even if only for 24 hours - trivandrum, wasn't exactly a great first stop with nothing going on, no cheap hotel rooms and a hot sweaty air that weighed us down! So we jumped on a local bus and took the half hour journey to ... read more

Saturday 14 to Wednesday 18 November It rained almost non-stop during our 3½ hour journey from Kanyakumari, but it eased shortly before we reached Varkala. Little did we know that this was merely a lull before the storm! Having struggled to find a way by road into the Varkala Marine Palace and eventually coming to a halt at the foot of a steep incline by their tradesmen’s entrance, we were met by the owner, Bhasker, and shown to our room, one of three traditional Keralan style apartments on the first floor of a recently-built block among the coconut palms. It’s a large room, wood-lined from floor to ceiling, and, as well as the usual shower and wc, it comes with a TV, a kitchenette and a sea-facing verandah with table, two wicker chairs, a wicker seat ... read more

So we arrived safely in Varkala and after a lot of searching we found our b&b "BKs" , the area was like a maze. We spent the first day in Varkala walking around, on the beach, getting bitten by mosi's and getting sunburnt. On the 2nd evening we met Artiste Joshe at the Kerala Coffee house...a typical lonely planet kindof place i'm quickly getting used to/sick of. Anyways Joshe was a Yoga guru who invited us to some early morning yoga which we did. We met him and some other tourists in a hotel block and did at least 3 hours of yoga i was exhausted, it was so hot and tiring, at least we gave it a try. After this we went to the hindu temple next door there was a tree covered in little ... read more
