Another month has passed. It goes so quickly when I'm traveling, although I dont feel like I've done that much in the past 5 weeks! That could be because I spent 2 weeks on Varkala beach...a gorgeous cliff town with the beach down below. I spent 2 weeks there last year too and just couldn't tear myself away again. I also met up with a British Ayurvedic doctor I met there last year and he spent some of the 2 weeks with me teaching me Ayurveda. It was great incentive to stay and I learnt a lot from him. Plus....the food in this town was AMAZING! and after a month of eating very bland "sattvic"food, it was great to have options and go to a restaurant and order whatever I wanted. Aside from the food and ... read more

I think the last time I wrote I’d just lost my phone and we were in Nha Trang. Well we spent another couple of days there and ended up going on a boat trip. Obviously we didn’t read the intinery but for once we were actually pleasantly surprised, we had a great time. We ended up going parasailing, now for those of you who haven’t seen our take off – where have you been?!!! Firstly I’d like to explain that EVERYONE did the exact same take off as we did (they all smacked the water face first!!) thankfully I shut my eyes or god knows what would have happened to my contact lenses – 80 metres in the air unable to see would not have been fun!! What you did not see on the video ... read more

So i am sat about 500m from a strip of pristine coastline, surrounded by palm trees and coconuts (apologises if you are reading this sat in the office!)– this is south india and i love it possibly more than the north. Here i have been rejoicing at the fact i can walk around for at least half and hour and sometimes no one talks to me. Yes i still seem to have ended up with 3 dinner date options already for tonight but the people are friendly and laid back and its the kind of place where the first man i saw yesterday morning nodded to me and then asked ‘grass?’ in a friendly way – it was 9am in the morning! The pace of life is slower, you can cross the road in under 5 ... read more

So after a rather heavy, alcohol fuelled Thursday evening, yesterday was a total write off as far as meaningful activity goes. Needless to say I was in no fit state to do any yoga other than lying down on the yoga mat! Today was entirely different. With a blood alcohol level of zero and a reasonable nights sleep (mainly because I was reluctant to turn the ceiling fan on so as not to wake David up, and visa versa) I got up to go running along the beach. David had got up to do yoga with Carrie again, so we both headed down to the beach. It was just starting to heat up, but bearable enough to do so some exercise. Kerala is one of the south most regions of India and as such very hot ... read more

Varkala has always been there in my list for a long time and the two day break was apt for me to head to the small fishing hamlet. Being in the southern part of kerala, traveling from bangalore was indeed a long journey. 14 hours was quite a bit of time but the excite ment grew as I got down at Kallambalam. It is a deviation of around 10 kms from this point off the NH 47 to Varkala. This is approximately 45 kms before you touch Kerala's capital, Thiruvananthapuram. The auto rickshaws will drop you near the helipad from where you can see the clear blue sea. The south cliff is towards the left where you have a couple of resorts. However all action happens on the north cliff which istowards the right of helipad. ... read more

Kerala has been a vacation, I can’t even call this traveling, it has been too easy and too enjoyable. I spent several days at a homestay 20 miles outside of Alleppey. A family had set up living arrangements for a handful of tourists on their family farm. They were wonderful and the food was among the best I’ve ever eaten. The other guests were a German couple and a blind English couple accompanied by an English guide who had been to India many times. Each evening we would drink heavily and debate the hypothetical question if aliens had observed the last three years of WW2 would they have been able to differentiate who the “moral” or “immoral” nations were between the Germans/Russians/Japanese/Americans, as well as some less heavy things. It was interesting observing blind people, a ... read more

Kerala - Varkala 18/02/11 - 21/02/11 We arrived at about 6pm and got a tuk tuk to the North cliff (about 2km) for 60Rs! The tuk tuk drivers here want to take you to hotels that give them commission so it should be made clear which hotel you want to go to and that you have paid. The tuk tuk back to the station cost 70Rs and they did not budge! They didn't seem bothered about negotiating (5 of them were in on it) just saying we would have to walk if we didn't accept it! The reason they gave for why it was cheaper from the station was that the drivers get commission that way. We think that it's more to do with how touristy the place is and some tourists will pay anything!! ... read more

Today was a blissfully late start. We went straight to The Coffee Temple and had breakfast...brown toast and a cheese and tomato omelette never tasted so good! As David and I headed to the beach we saw a few more of the folks from the ashram who had escaped for the day. With the Shiva Ratri festival last night going on till 3am, everyone was given Thursday off rather than Friday and they had decided to hit the beach. We all met up at the beach and enjoyed basking in the sun with the gentle breeze taking the edge off the heat. Needless to say, with my shoulders still pink and tender I remained safely huddled under an umbrella with my only my white pasty legs showing! I went for a swim and the sea was ... read more

My final morning Satsang today and getting up at 5.30am felt exceptionally easy. I showered and applied more after sun. Although I didn't blog yesterday, my highlight was David and I heading to the lake. Even though I didn't swim with David, my topless ten minutes in the sun had meant that I no longer had a t-shirt tan but was a nice shade of lobster pink! I headed to Satsang and did my final meditation and chanting session before David and I checked out. We had morning tea and said our final goodbyes to a few of the friends we'd made at the ashram. Varkala was a two hour drive away so splitting a taxi between us seemed ideal so as to avoid struggling with heavy bags on public transport in the heat. As we drove ... read more
