The most frequent bit of advice I got when people heard I was going to India was to only eat vegetarian food, I was not overly keen on the idea but thought it was better than being ill, especially when traveling on buses and trains with dodgy facilities!!!! So for the most part I did just that and ate only vegetarian food. I gave in on a couple of occasions where I felt the fish/chicken was safe. It is really easy to remain veggy in India as a huge proportion of the population is vegetarian for religious reasons and so the variety to choose from is massive. Luckily we were travelling with a few seasoned India travellers so advice and explanations were readily available. Whether it was a simple Thali lunch, a mixture of several small ... read more

So sometime at around 7am listening to some more Bollywood singing we saw a sign for Varkala (our destination)-so with the help of a kind man who was singing along to the Bollywood music having a whale of a time we asked the driver to stop here rather than our intended stop which was further down the road (we didn't know this when booking and were obviously sold any old ticket going in a southernly direction). We were dropped off in the middle of nowhere and definitely paid white faced people price to get to where we were staying via a tub tuk. We had chosen to go to Varkala as we wanted a few days resting In a bungalow on the beach to catch some rays before heading to the ashram and onto vietnam. There ... read more

Eight and a half weeks down. One to go. With Adina and Lisa having wrapped up their school responsibilities, we headed south from Coimbatore. Our destination - Varkala, a touristy beach resort destination in the state of Kerala. For the next seven days, this is where we set up shop. At this point in the trip for me, motivation dwindles to see and do everything possible. It's not that a 9 week trip is so long at all (not much compared to the 7 month trip in South America), its rather that when you've been traveling for a good while and you have known all along that the end is April 25th, well when that time nears, you're mentally ready to head home. At least for me that's how its been on my long trips and ... read more

Just when I thought India could not surprise me, could not throw me anything new...BAM... I was hit. More accurately actually, I hit something. I lost control of my scooter and drove it straight into the side of the chai shop. Fuck! It threw me and my friend off to the side, leaving us both lying in pain on the dirty Indian soil, with hordes of men running towards us. I could feel only the intensity of the pressure on my chest as I took each breath. And the surge of blood escaping from the brand-new hole in my face. The worst of it actually came later. The night spent in the hospital getting x-rays and CT scans (that revealed no broken bones only bruised ribs) and a stitch in my cheek, all passed very quickly. ... read more

Our start in Varkala was.... well, tired. Having been up since 4 am with a bit of sleep in the sleeper train from Coimbatore, we were desperate for a nice shower and a cool beer. The night before we had made a reservation at a guesthouse. But as we showed up, the owner told us that she had not received a reservation. Anyway, a room was free for 3 nights - so no problem. And what a room it was: it was the cleanest room that exists in India (at least that is what we think!) with a wonderful private balcony and a fridge! Perfect to buy and store some fruit and relax. Well, if (after this blog) you still want to go to Varkala then you must stay at the Mango Villa. The owner is ... read more

Review of Black Beach Resort Thiruvambadi Beach, Varkala 695141, India We adored this heavenly location and beautiful new resort overlooking the cliff and best beach in Varkala. The rooms are big and clean with lovely sea and lawn view balcony. The manager and staff were kind and helpful. There is an added bonus of cable TV and free Wi-fi for when you feel like staying in. The green lawn overlooking the sea is rejuvenating. This place is right on the cliff top and has a good lawn right in front so you have a relaxed time in the evening. It is located at a very good spot on the cliff which is not far from all the shacks on the cliff and as well as lets you have some silent time in the room.... read more

Back home again. But this time not alone. I am sharing my home with Thomas, who claimed it as his home a few years ago as well. We are in Varkala, Kerala. Enjoying the sun, the ocean and the delicious food. Although we have quite a different idea of what delicious means...so I drag him to my touristy restaurants with a great view of the ocean to eat my orgasmic cheese naan (gooey cheese ozzing out of the fluffy bread...mmmm) and when he's had enough he pulls me in the other direction to the small, dirty, smelly local joints in town for Keralan thali...rice, parotta, vegetables, dal and sometimes a fried banana for dessert. For a third of the price (80 cents). Its a nice balance. We drive to town on our rented scooter and feel ... read more

Booyaka….shaaa you lot. And welcome to another post from John-Jo. I do hope you are well and enjoyed Christmas. I am going to be honest, my second visit to Sri Lanka did not start very well. I think my time in Iran had set my standards a wee bit high in terms of humanity. I knew this was a risk, I remember telling work buddies of my concerns months before I left the UK. Truth is the minute I hit Sri Lanka I was back on the crappy end of the tourist stick. And it hurt. And please read to the end of this post to understand what I mean by this. Iran was so blissfully free of foreigner exploitation I arrived in Sri Lanka with these memories still strong and fond memories of my last ... read more

Namaste friends!6 months of work in Montreal and Vancouver has once again brought me to the other side of the world. The journey took me in the opposite direction than usual...I flew over the pacific instead of over Europe, landing first in Honk Kong to visit Jordan and Alice and meet their daughter. I had only seen them once since our last encounter in HK in 2006. So I was really happy to be back there again. I wasn't surprised by the overwhelming amount of people in HK. I remembered it being bustling and busy at all times. But I noticed this time that everywhere the enormous crowds walked, they had a sense of purpose. they were often going to and from the metro stations. Everyone must have had somewhere really important to go! Few people ... read more

Ah yes, where we left off, and a word about that midnight train from Pondicherry across the country to Trivandrum. We left our hotel at seven in the evening in a hired taxi who provided us with our first experience of travelling the highways of India by night. We were only on the road for an hour and a half, and we found the experience stimulating and exciting, because there was such a diversity of traffic and people on the road and roadside to watch - including solo bikers to families of four on motor scooters; bicycles with no headlights; and numerous tuk-tuks competing for road space on a two lane highway with countless buses and very large trucks. Having said that, there is little question that night road travel in India is not for the ... read more
