At this very exact moment, we were supposed to be sitting on a plane to Delhi... meeting Indu... seeing Delhi tomorrow... getting overnight train to Ramnagar..... But Davy got this awful food poisining (we blame a beef steak from Hungry eye restaurant which either wasn't fresh or wasn't cooked properly) and he was feeling very sick for last two days so we had to cancel our flight and we are still in Varkala. I was really scared the first night when Davy even couldn't hold in water but he seems to be getting much better, he took some pills and rehydratation sachets we had with us and a local doctor gave him some pills as well. It was kinda funny when Davy got clear soup with a plain bread after not eating for the whole day ... read more

Blog 1-8 Feb Mumbai to Varkala, Kerala "Bollywood in Bombay and Keralan Coconuts!" From the moment we first decided on a trip to India the prospect of a weekend in Mumbai was going to be both unmissable and unforgettable. And even though our sickly bodies chose not to comply with an ambitious social schedule nevertheless this monster of a city did not disappoint. Our experience may have been different however, had it not been for the very kind hospitality from my friend Vijesh and his lovely girlfriend Himarsha. Having worked together in London for five years before he moved out to India, it was so exciting for us to catch up and V was quick to clear his schedule. He pulled out all the stops to give us a great taste of the Mumbai highlife and ... read more

Hello again,so we got to Varkala by train, our first train journey but not the last, from Allepey which was another place I didnt want to leave but once I saw where we were I was absolutely delighted. It was night time when we arrived so unfortunately we weren't able to swim or so we thought. We booked into a really nice place called Bamboo village and obviosly all the huts were made from bamboo so this was another first experience for us. Didnt do too much the first night, got some beer, got our bearings on the surounding area and got nicely acquinted with Abby the guy who runs Bamboo village who took a liking to us immediately. So sim went off to bed and i drank some beers got the dutch courage on the ... read more

Everyone says “you’ve got to go to Goa.” So we did. Benolium Beach was a little slice of paradise. The water is warm, the surf is mellow and the sunsets are to die for. It is an easy place to spend time in. Calm waters flow into fine white sand. Days are spent practicing yoga, taking long walks and working on tanning. Goa is different from the rest of India. Alcohol flows freely, bikini clad tourists flaunt their skin and vendors are laid back when selling their wares. I can see why people spend their entire winter on these beaches and never venture far away. We, however, continued south to Kochi, Kerala. I liked Fort Cochin immediately. It’s a laid back coastal town shaded by tall trees and the high walls of its Portuguese, Dutch and ... read more

Well after the stress of being in a completely controlled environment (the Ashram) I needed a bit of sun, sea and relaxing, with no chanting and no crazy people dressed all in white trying to convert me! So to the beach of Varkala I (and friends) did go. That place is really nice, wish I had spent a bit longer there really but time is getting tight now!! Will be heading back to UK soon and soooo many places not been to on list! Beach time is always nice but I also had the added enjoyment of a beautiful ayreuvadic full body massage! It was soooo good, think I may become addicted to massages. So so relaxing. Worst thing about the beach is the price of the 'tourist food'! Had some trouble since my card wouldnt ... read more

Wouhou! ... read more

(Hello from Kerala in Malayalam...). I'm writing this latest installment overlooking the Arabian Sea as our Indian adventure comes to a close. We've spent the last few weeks travelling around the wealthier states of Karnataka and Kerala in South India, a far more straightforward affair than negotiating the craziness of Rajasthan. Following our Spicejet flight from Delhi to Bangalore we caught the sleeper train to the stunning ruins of Hampi. The landscape in Hampi is like a scene from Jurassic Park - huge boulders and ancient temples haphazardly scattered around banana plantations and palm trees with monkeys scampering about everywhere. Due to the heat, exploring in the daytime was a bit of a challenge, so the hottest part of the day was generally spent reading in the riverside cafes drinking fresh coconut milk ... read more
