Hampi is a land of ruins, once ruled by the great Vijaynagar empire ( Krishnadeva Raya and likes ), an empire of wealth and treasure. Situated in Karnataka, a southern state in India, it is one of the most visited tourist site for foreigners. You get all types of accomodation here, from Rs 100 ( $ 2.5 approx ) to Rs 4000 ( $ 100 approx ) per night. It is better to stay at Hampi bazar because of the proximity to the ruins rather than staying at places nearer to the Hampi station. The place has 3 principle attractions - historic ruins, temples of great importance and bouldering rocks. Cycles are available at Rs 30 a day, mopeds at Rs 150 a day and motorcycles at Rs 200 a day. .....Until you're staring the prospect of death in the face."...Now let me explain: We boarded the bus in Panjim on Friday evening, ready to head on to the amazing Hampi for a change of pace. This was no ordinary bus....It was a humongous, rickety, cheap government run bus from the dark ages! We boarded with an open mind and decided that people do this kind of thing every day so we shouldn't be afraid and anyway we'd got extra leg room as we'd bagged seats at the front!....How wrong we were! 3 hours into a 10hr journey, our knuckles were white, our nerves were in tatters and we were confident that there was no hope in making it any further, let alone to Hampi! 2 hours into the journey, we began the accent up a huge ... read more

Yeah Girls & Boys, Ladies & Gents ... Time is running out, still some days to burn in India before heading Nepal. Now, sh... looots of things happened during the last days, time for an update. We heard the weather in Germany is pretty bad, don't be sad, even if the grass seems to be greener on our side, the moscitos do like India veeeery much too. Dunno if there're more moscitos or indians .. Nevermind, we're currently staying in Hampi, a very ancient temple area, eveything lookes pretty ruined. It's hard to find word to describe the beauty of that piece of land, try to catch it from the pix. Before we landed here, we had the chance to join a traditional temple festival in a small village nearby Palakkad. Main attractions were elefants and ... read more

We woke up at 5:30am to catch the 2nd class sleeper train from Goa to Hospet, which is the gateway city to the magical little village of Hampi. I'm travelling with a couple friends I met, Danny from L.A. and Nicole from Alberta who are also exploring the vastness of India. I haven't wrote my Goa blog yet since I've spent a few days there, and will be spending a few more days there when I get back from Hampi, so I figure I'll update it then. Goa has got a great hippy vibe going on there, I really enjoy it and it was hard to make the decision to leave it. I've heard even better things about Hampi though. It seems everyone who has been to India says, whatever I do I must visit Hampi. ... read more

We arrived in Hampi by sleeper bus from Goa. The journey took 8 hours and as we paid a bit extra for 2 tickets on the bus with beds rather than just reclining seats we thought we would at least get a bit of sleep and be traveling in relative comfort but we were wrong. The bus seemed to have been just gutted completely and MDF compartments for 2 had been knocked together and a mattress thrown in. Every time the bus turned a corner, Hannah and I would be flung from side to side in our rickety old compartment with fears of being thrown out into the aisle. I had high expectations for Hampi because so many people we have met have said that it is their favorite place in India and the minute we ... read more

Idemo lokalnim autobusom u Hampi kroz neku polupustinju.Prvi put se susrecemo sa najobicnijim Indijskim selima, jad beda veca nego ikad. Onda iznenada oko nas pocinu ostatci stare civilizacije Vijayanagara.

Although this one is much different, to say the least. Hampi, which I mispelled Humpi before (I read it written that way once, and assumed that was correct), is an 8 hour train ride east of Goa, and is an ancient temple complex up a little into the hills. There is a small town that has sprung up around the temple complex, and across the river is a bunch of hotels and restaurants. First impression: its cheap! A lot cheaper than any place we've been before. Second impression, its a very chilled out and relaxed environment, but with a lot more hippies than mixed travelers and tourists, like in Goa. Granted we're staying at a very hippie place, the Goan Corner Guest House, but like one out of every three or four people you see here ... read more

Hello! so we just returned from our weekend trip to Hospet-Hampi which was basically a massive archeaological site and i felt like i was in the desert. it was really neat to see all of the old temples and baths and buildings that have stayed in tact for hundreds of years, such intricate details its was really amazing. however being there for two days the novelty wore off since architecture isn't really my thing... but on the saturday morning some of us got up at 5am and got driven out to the site and climbed these super sketchy steps to the top to watch the sunrise which was beautiful and well worth it. monkeys even came and joined us, they were not scared of humans at all which was cute, but a little scary since they ... read more
