Since I last left you I have traveled over 500 kilometers, hiked maybe 6 miles, biked 8 kilometers...and drowned in exhaustive heat. Welcome to India. For a girl who once was able to read Gone with the Wind in a single sitting through the Carolina mountains when I was 10, 15 minutes into an overnight 12 hour busride...I felt so queezy I didn't think I would make it. Coming up with the mantra "stomach of steel" and repeating it perhaps 15,000 times over the next 12 hours...I moved to the front of the bus where I watch as our bus driver seemed to derive unusual pleasure at hitting every possible pothole (not hard to find)...and revving the engine as we would idle waiting for passengers to embark and disemark. Around 5:30 AM we finally arrived...and were ... read more

Just as I thought my weeks would become routine, that the trips would become seldom and life would become a bit more ordinary I was shipped back to the east coast on Tuesday night, to tsunami hit Nagapattinum in Tamil Nadu. Another 10 hour bus journey, I received little sleep and had two very long, hot and hectic days. We had a meeting with Action Aid over a proposal we submitted, the outcome wasn’t too agreeable as they cut the budget by half, but I made a few good contacts on a more positive note. I travelled back to Bangalore on Thursday night, alone and by train for the first time, but was far more comfortable than coach, which was lucky as I was off again on my travels the following evening. Around 10pm on Friday ... read more

Hi everone it's me, Alia. Well, we've been in Hampi for about 4 days now, and we all are enjoying it. The bus ride to get here wasn't so enjoyable, because what was supposed to be luxurious, was bumpy, cramped, not to mention overnight. Yet, out of some miracle we made it all in one piece. But, it was worth it. We arrived at 7:00 am, and had to carry all 9 of our bags to our hotel room. We found a hotel with a wonderful veiw of the rice paddies, rock formations and the river. Hampi is mostly ruins, and temples of all the Hindu gods. It is considered a holy city and also where Hanuman ( the monkey god) was born. Hampi is in it's condition because in the 1500's the musllm rulers ... read more

Samir's article. Alright, let's start with the bus. Now I wouldn't say luxiorious, and I wouldn't say 4 wheels and a piece of cardboard, so we'll skip that part. All I can do is write this When we got to Hampi, we had to take all 9 of our bags down a couple dozen steps and on to a small motorboat, to get across the river, and then up another couple dozen steps. By the time we got up, we were so tired we grabbed the first hotel that we could. Sadly, our room was a meter wide and long, so we got another room just as ugly. The surrounding was great, but we still coudn't stand it. The next day we immediately got a better hotel, with just as nice a view. Later that day we ... read more

Stretching our money for 8 months means that certain sacrifices need to be made. In this case the sacrifice was comfort and the saving was $30 AUD (which is a whole days budget!). Our 7am local bus beckoned and took us the long ten bumpy hours across the state of Karnataka to Hampi. We'd like to say that the scenery was worth it but sadly it was mostly brown, desolate and dry. There were however the bright tinsel and ribbon laden bison-drawn caravans of the gypsies spiced things up, and in a couple of spots fields of lush sunflowers which added a dash of vibrant colour. Apart from some pictures of the gypsy carts taken from our speeding bus all we ended up with was a sore bum and thick film of brown dust that covered ... read more

We got in to Hampi on the 11th. Nice place very touristy, but not a much pressure from the hawkers as some places. They also have the traffic blocked off.. Makes a quiet little place, and boy do I like that. So I’m in Hampi for my birth day.. Hampi is a veg cusine only and has no beer.. The strange thing is I’m doing OK without beer or maybe I’m OK since we are going to Goa next and they allow beer. Taking a sleep bus to Goa tonight. Hopefully I get some sleep on this bus.. Cheers John ... read more

So, from Goa we headed up to Hampi. Train was very late but we just managed to get a guest house in Hampi before everything closed. Hampi is actaully really small, just a few tiny streets, which is nice. It's a very chilled out place with lots of roof top cafes and amazing scenery. We went to Hampi for the ruins of ancient Hindu templed and palace. It really is an awsome place. The whole landscape is covered in huge boulders. You kind of have to see it to belive it (photos will apear soon). It looks just like a load of giants have just picked up the boulders and thrwn them around a lot. We did spend a long time speculating as to how some of the boulders got to where they are (e.g. on ... read more

Hi guys, So I haven't written in a while... sorry about that but the internat connection has been so teriible since I last wrote. Anyways so I hope I can remeber everything we've done since the last time I wrote. In the end we really fell in love with Gokarna and Kuddle beach where we were staying. We met a really great group of people who we spent our days and nights eating and chatting with. The huts where we were staying were extremely simple with nothing but a bed but after we took two rooms, I slept suprisingly well. The food at the hotel was amazing... we ate really well and for next to nothing. The day before we left thegroup who we were hanging out with left the beach to head to explore another ... read more

We really liked Hampi. The surrounding boulder-strewn landscape alone makes the visit here well worth it. This medium-sized village, has a peaceful (for India) air about it, helped by a partial road block on autorickshaws and other vehicles. The town has almost the same number of travellers as residents, partially due to its proximity to the crowds in Goa. There are lots of chillout cafes serving water-free fruit juices, decent food alternatives and lots of floor cushions to laze around on. It was chillout time for us too. This is not just a place to laze, Hampi was once the site of one of the largest empires in Indian history - the 16th century Vijayanagar empire. It's thought that half a million people lived in this city at the height of the empire, more than in ... read more

Feb 3 - 6 After the Yellamma festival, we were pretty exhausted and ended up just hiring a taxi to take us 5 hours to Hampi, the former capital of the vijayanagar empire and site of many beautiful temples and ruins. In the morning we woke up early to see the temple elephant, Laxshmi get her bath in the river. We ran into this guy Ramesh who we had met at the Yellamma festival. He was a young rickshaw driver in Hampi and he arranged a tour of the ruins with his friend Shiva who was an official guide. Hampi is a strange place - very chill and relaxed, but dry and the power would go out several times a day. The evening after our tour we went out to dinner in Hospet with Ramesh and ... read more
