At last have finaly found somewhere that is gorgeous....Hampi, we stayed in a lovley little guesthouse called shanti. Hampi was a place many many years ago where there used to be huge bizzars trading goods like rubys and gold. Now inside the city walls there are cute guesthouses nice restraunts and also temples dating back to the 14 and 15th century. We spent a day walking round the ruins on a guided tour and we met a german girl called claudia who we befriended for the next few days. Learnt all about the history of the buildings and their importance. Lots of the temples had been turned in ruins as they were hindu temples and the muslims tore them down when they invaded hampi. Some temples do still remain as they had muslim influenzed archutecture as ... read more

This was not in the plan but was so glad to get to the warmth and the more chilled out way of pretty much everything...the men still stare but not with as much conviction as the northern counterparts!! We got to Ajanta too late to stay...so did the big haul down to Bombay! we moved form our comfy 3AC sleepr down to sleeper and went to sit with the locals, we even had to share a seat since it was so full! It was a great journey and met a lovely family who tried to give me some bangles, upon me trying them on I was highly embarrassed that they would not fit over my hand to get on my wrist - oops!! Bombay - nice and warm but bloody expensive!!! The city had a very ... read more

I did, as expected, get stuck in Varkala in my room wiht the sea view.. but when I finally escaped the timing turned out to be perfect as a couple of days down the 'kerala traveller route' (I thought i was being clever but the lonely planet subliminally forces everyone to travel in the same direction - its spooky) I found my self in the big pink sky scraper ashram of Amma 'the hugging mother', with a lot of lovely people including a mad giggling kiwi (Angela), a big hairy german (Matteus) and the legend from jersey that is Josephione Gare.. We all stuck together on and off for the next week or so, slashing hotel room and rickshaw prices to the floor with our bargaining genius. Method: set a ridiculously low price, stick to it, ... read more

Namaste'! Ci siamo fermati in un asilo ... read more

We arrived in India on December 12th... here is our first chapter. We traveled from Goa to Hampi via open air train. Caroline, my b-fri from Texas, and our good friend Jason, who David taught with in Hong Kong, were with us, so we were a foursome. We got off at Hospet, where we were informed by a gaggle of rickshaw drivers that there was a sugarcane strike blocking the road to Hampi, and that the only way to reach it was to go around a bit, and then back through some canals, adding an extra 100 rupees to the bill. TII (This Is India). So, after a 20 minute dusty rickshaw ride, we finally landed at the New Shanti Guesthouse in the heart of Hampi, where we were abruptly greeted by the resident guesthouse yogi, ... read more

Scalcinato e senza ammortizzatori e a noi ci e' capitata l'ultima cuccetta in fondo.

To everyone who thought traveling was all positive and exciting: The day before I wrote this letter to mom I spent the entire day in bed with a, well lets just call it an unsettled stomach... savy? Well, I went back to bed after talking to ya(we spend an entire hour on the phone) and had an alright time. I waited a good hour almost before taking the pill(anti-biotic) to make sure it would stay down... it did. I then slept with the light on all night as the dark was to lonely almost or something, i dont really know. (makes me smile thinking about it lol) I just really think that I need some rest and to slow down for a bit. I woke up feelin alright but I went out for a short walkabout ... read more

Four of us (Dana, Ezra, Imogen, and I) decided to take a sleeper bus to Hampi. I had taken a lot of overnight buses in the North, but I guarantee you that the name "sleeper" is false. Well, this time Imogen and I shared a sleeper cabin, where we could lie down fully. My goodness, for the extra $2.50, this was the better way to go. I managed to get some ZZZs as the bus rolled on to Hampi. We arrived in town mid-morning, with lots of ricksaw drivers wanting to help us find a hotel. Fortunately the Brits had told a place across the river, away from the market and the craziness. Our hotel, named Peace in Sanskrit, was a lovely place, with swings that overlook rice paddies, a restaurant that will give room service ... read more

Still here. Still alive - just. Some wise old soul once said that travelling was all about the journey, not the destination. That's all very romantic until you actually have to get from one place to the other using buses in India. First journey this week was from Goa to Hampi. It was an overnight bus journey which I was weirdly quite looking forward to. I knew I was in a sleeper bunk - which means that they chum you up with another western female so I thought that would be fine. My "roommate" was a french lady - about 50 - and seemed very smiley. The sleeper element of the bus was that two seats next to each other reclined all the way flat into a double bed and then there was a wee curtain ... read more
