Lakshmi Narsimha Hampi is a land of ruins, once ruled by the great Vijaynagar empire ( Krishnadeva Raya and likes ), an empire of wealth and treasure.
Situated in Karnataka, a southern state in India, it is one of the most visited tourist site for foreigners.
You get all types of accomodation here, from Rs 100 ( $ 2.5 approx ) to Rs 4000 ( $ 100 approx ) per night. It is better to stay at Hampi bazar because of the proximity to the ruins rather than staying at places nearer to the Hampi station.
The place has 3 principle attractions -
historic ruins,
temples of great importance and
bouldering rocks.
Cycles are available at Rs 30 a day, mopeds at Rs 150 a day and motorcycles at Rs 200 a day. The best is to hire a cycle, pick up some snacks and water and start visiting the various sites. Details and history of each site is provided right at the front of the site. Ofcourse, guides are available in plenty who can tell you all the stories and scientific analysis of the sites. Hemkut Hills
Hemkut Hills who can forget the crossing of the river by coracle - a locally made boat made from trees carrying as much as 20 people alongwith 2-3 motorcycles together.
The best months for visiting this place is Nov to Feb as it gets too hot in the other months. Hampi festival, the attraction of the place occurs in the month of Nov when neumerous plays, dances, temporary shops, are done to the place.
Busses and trains ply between Mumbai and Hubli and between Hubli and Bangalore. Get down at Hospet and catch a tarin or bus to Hospet. From there, take a rickshaw ( 3 tyred vehicle ) to Hampi.
